The Seguin

Back to the Dungeon 😊
(I like my Dungeon, very quiet)
I started a new build, The Seguin.
This will be a scratch build.
I ordered plans from the Net.
I picked the Seguin as it seemed straight forward and was designed for Steam.
The keel has been laid.
The Frames installed.
The sub deck installed.
The one by attached to the keel is to keep it from hogging.
The build will be delayed, so I can process firewood for this winter. (Last Pic)

Decking

Started the decking.
I used 1/8x1/16th Basswood strips with black caulking strips between.
For adhesive, I used thin CA.
I am not entirely pleased with the look, will have to wait for completion for a final judgment.

    Hi Trev,
    Your deck is looking good.
For what it is worth personally I agree with ToraDog.
I tend to think working boats decks should have a Matt finish, although imho a Gloss base to seal things first then a Matt or Satin finish over the top.
If you are not sure take the time to do some experiments off the model to get a feel for what you are doing.
At the end of the day it is your build and it really depends on what you are trying to achieve.

    Cheers,
    Stephen.

Decking

Decking complete. Applying gloss varnish to seal the planking, followed by satin varnish.
I was going to use Tung Oil as I did on the Mt. Washington, but I needed to fill the caulk lines. In hindsight I should have used wider caulk strips.

Steam Power

I was able to acquire a Saito T2DR Engine and B2F Boiler on eBay for a fraction of list. I would rather a gas fired boiler than alcohol as the gas boiler can be pressure regulated. I guess I could always convert it, but I will stick with the alcohol for now.

    Hi Gary
I do miss the water level gage. There does not seem to be an easy way to install on without drilling the boiler, which I prefer not to do.
I can and will install a pressure gage. They are available from Age of Sail in the States.
I also will install a whistle.
The Chinese boilers have the benefit of sight gages.

Still Varnishing the Deck

Seven coats and counting.
Shoulda coated the deck with clear epoxy to fill the gaps in the seams.
Build is in slo-mo.

Planking the hull

The deck seams finally filled in, I started planking the hull, a little on the rough side, but will be fine once sanded, faired and glassed, it will be fine🙄🙄.
Ran out of Balsa, so I started constructing and siding the cabin.

Seguin life Boat

I saw this little gem on eBay. The scale seemed appropriate for the Seguin so---
Here is the build in pics.

When I built my Sequin in 1990 There was no E-Bay to buy a life boat for that model so I used the kit life boat & some masking tape for the cover .P/S that's a real nice looking life boat & you probably will not put cover over boat. I got my Sequin from Booths Hobby on Concession Street . I was on Strike for 3 months so had lots of time to get it built for 1991 Valentine's show at LimeRidge Mall

    Hi Garth,
Do you have any pics of your Seguin?
    I would be very interested.
I have used pics from other builds to refine my Seguin.
And yes the lifeboat will most probably not be covered.
It was only $30. US from China, which I thought was reasonably, considering the detail.
Once I started building, I cursed the detail😂🤣😂🤣
