I have just taken delivery of my next project kit, the Mountfleet (Slipway) Al Kubar harbour tug.
I get a lot of advice from my club but am just fishing around for any comments before I start.
Mainly propulsion, motors, ESC’s and batteries. Any comments from you guys would be appreciated. Rockbag

Good evening, my Smit Nederland is of a similar size, I fitted a pair of high torque 555 motors (about a tenner each) powered by a 12v lead acid battery which cost about £12 and runs forever. I opted to use twin Hobby Wing Esc’s (about £15 each as I recall) 60 amp. I opted for tank steering so each of the sticks on my FlySky FS transmitter controls a motor. As only one of the sticks “centres” I purchased a centring kit for the other stick (a couple of quid) which means that if I let the controls go both sticks centre in the “neutral” position. The tug has slightly faster than scale speed and will turn in its own length. For navigation and spot lamps I used prewired 3v LED’s which have their own prewired resistors. I ran a single lead from the battery to a wago connector fixed underneath the superstructure into which all the lights are connected, it worked well but I got fed up with the long trailing lead from the top half to the bottom half of the boat so I did away with the trailing lead and replaced it with a switched 9v battery holder which is Velcro’d to the inside of the superstructure which makes things tidier. I switch the lights on by simply reaching inside but I’m contemplating fitting a micro switch so I can control the lights remotely using a spare switch on the tx. I’m a complete novice at this but hope this helps.
PS the battery is heavy and helps with the ballast and can be charged without removing from the hull.
Cheers
