When 2 become 1

And another project to work on. I have a scratch built "frigate " which I tried experimenting on with dazzle camouflage. Mainly constructed from balsa for the hull and superstructure made from odds and ends in the world renowned "spares box "📦 . All worked as only a very simple 2 channel set up. I also have a French built model which I'd bought for the grand sum of £5.00. A nice little runner, unfortunately the deck never really fitted that well and continually leaked resulting in it becoming an impromptu submarine after getting swamped at the lake. As soon as it was rescued from the depths of the lake, and dried out, I had tried to reseal but unfortunately it's never been truly resolved.
So with this in mind plus needing a bit of shelf space, I decided that I will combine the 2. Going to be a fun project. The aim will be to basically use the hull of the frigate as this is definitely watertight and transfer the superstructure of the "submarine" . The hull being balsa will also be lighter so when completed I should also have a nice turn of speed 😀

Paused for thought

Now that I've started to "deconstruct "the 2 vessels, I was considering wether or not to maybe add a flared bow to the frigate hull. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could potentially replicate this 🤔 😳.
As you can see from the photo, the bow at present is pretty flat.

I guess the way to go is to do it in balsa and sand to shape, using some P38 filler if required. Shouldn't add too much weight.

Bow flared

Having searched the "scrap drawer of wood " I found some suitable material which I've started to shape into place.

Flared bow restructured

Nothing much to add but started to spray the bow now that I've shaped as best I can. It looks better than the photo 📸 I was able to take. Work in progress 😊

Deck

Started to lay the deck down, once completed I can then stain and start to transfer the superstructure etc over. Hopefully I'll finish soon time allowing 😊

Destruction and reconstruction

Been busy at work and too blooming cold 🥶 outside in the garage for much building at the moment. However, on the bright side, 🌞 the temperature went up to a positive 3 degrees so managed to strip down the old hull and have now started to transfer over. The deck has been stained with a liquid boot 👢 polish, thought I'd try it out and looks OK. The railings were a bugger to remove, managed with a pair of side cutters to remove. The original French build may have leaked all the time, but they did know how to secure the fittings. 😂. A few photos showing the demise of the old plastic French build and the start of the new look.

Nearly there

Managed to achieve quite a bit more today. Now starting to look like something again. The deck is still "lifted " forward as a locking catch was still drying at the time ⏲️ photos 📸 were taken

Took her out on the lake for her first run after the Calypso. Pleased all worked and no disasters 👍😊. Now I can put her to bed and resume with other projects.
