Positive steps on the Wheel House
Thank God for railroad decals! This is not perfect, but it's pretty close to what I was looking for and a difficult task, but decal wrangling when it works makes all the difference in the world to us modelers! Much to be done especially weathering.

Starting to really take shape
Ahoy Mateys:
Detailing continues, albeit slowly, but happy with the results so far. May stop with the window dressing for now to focus on the mechanicals for a while. It's going to swing a large (3") heavy brass prop, so I may ditch the offset system that Dumas originally called for and go direct drive. I am open to suggestions. But, keep in mind that after some research it seems that this beast will require upwards of 19 pounds of ballast to get her to sit right. And I prefer not to go Lipo with this one. Much to consider. We'll see.

Moving along slowly...

When I'm not trying to understand the science of Lipos for my Traxxas Spartan, I run down to the shop and do a little more work on the tug, with some of the crew taking a smoke break.
I picked up a wrecked Pro Boat and ripped out all the electronics and hope to transfer them in this hull...I hope.
Cash! post pix of your horizon tug innards! 😀😉

- @jumpugly Morning bud!! Hey, I understand radio silence. At 65 years old, I still work 50+hours a week, so my time on this board is limited...I post my build blog updates and bail. So don't feel bad brother.
About the transmitter...I'm not sure if the protocol for the Harbor Tug is Spektrum or not. My transmitter is a Radiomaster 16s, which has the 4in1 module installed on the board. i can bind to Frsky, Flysky, Spektrum, Joysway, some variants of Futaba, and more. Ive tried to bind to that esc/rx combo that came with the boat, but so far I haven't found the right protocol. Also, I have found no reference to what light does what when you bind the receiver. Sometimes I think Spektrum goes beyond proprietary, think they're trying to be the DARPA of the RC world. So, long story short, I'm not using the supplied transmitter. From what I can tell it works fine, has multiple channels (4, I think) and does a decent job.
What transmitter are you planning to use? If you need help sorting out I'll do my best!!Liked by jumpugly - @Cashrc

In general I like the old tried and true 2Channel Futaba's. They are inexpensive used, but the trick is finding the right ESC to use with them. I am also a bit down on Lipos, although with my Traxxas Spartan I've been able to negotiate the charging and storage issues. Nothing about them is as simple as the old style Tamiya Nicads...or even nimh batteries for that matter. Although I do like the idea of going with one 2 cell lipo for the tug, just to move her around despite the prop size. My wife thinks I'm nuts putting my tug in the water, and she wants me to detail it out even more for display. LOL!
It seems a bit wrong not to put it in the water! Be that as it may there's a ProBoat dealer not too far from me. I'll see what he's got for sale or I'll just go to an outfit like OmniModels and get it the electronics there. I also see a ton of new stuff coming from China that seems good and very cheap! I'm just not sure yet.

I work on the tug any chance I get nowadays. Pudding and bumper tires in place. And serious weathering is just about ready to commence: I think. Ballast tests coming soon.😉

Truth be told, these NYCentral tugs had these massive rubber "puddings" on the bow and not the old style gigantic rope ball bumpers. So, in a way, I took the easy way out, but got the scale look I was looking for.

Took the plunge on a motor.

Well, I went and made what may be considered a hasty move. I stumbled across a NIB never used Dumas Products Model #2005 12V motor that was designed for the 2005 and up versions of my tug. I am also using the original off-set gear drive system designed for this motor. Now here's the rub... how should I go about finding and workable esc, best batteries for power, and trans/receiver combo; although with the later, I may just go with a trusty Futaba set-up.
Is my brain over thinking this new situation?
Any and suggestions deeply appreciated!

I agree with people's concerns with Lipo, but I have given in, and started using them.

The 1060 ESC looks like a great call to marry to the old 12V Dave! And reasonably priced as well!

What a remarkable transformation already.
The difference between the earlier stage and the latest photos is striking, and the tug is really beginning to develop that heavy, purposeful Brooklyn harbor character.
The hull lines look superb, and the new paintwork gives the model tremendous presence. I especially like the contrast between the black hull, red bottom, and the muted wheelhouse color — very clean, very classic, and exactly the sort of working finish these tugs carried.
The proportions also look spot on. Even sitting on the stand in the workshop, it already has the unmistakable “weight” and stance of a real harbor tug. That is not easy to achieve in model form.
You are building a beautiful piece of maritime history here, and it is wonderful watching the project evolve step by step. Looking forward to seeing the next stage of detailing and maybe weathering.
