20th Scale ELCO 80ft PT boat part 8

Hi
Added the three motor mounts and reinforcements, predrilled mounting holes and shaft exit before fixing into position.

Used a long shaft and a dab of paint on the end of it, to mark the points of the motor positions, the use a small right-angle to angle to set the mount 90 degrees to the shaft.

Now waiting for some nuts, bolts, spacers and washers

Thanks
Roy

Installed the three out-runner motors, I hope I never have to replace them.

They have rubber mounting washers and nylock nuts and spring washers in M3.

They are about half inch apart took a few hours to install with full access as currently boat has not been skinned.

I hope to add small fans to the prop hubs to keep them cool

Now have received the rudders and water scoops. they will be installed after the bottom skins are on.

Putting on the bottom skin of 0.8mm birch ply, in ever diminishing lengths.
I changed my glue from PVA (502) to Gorilla glue.

In the words of Delboy, 'What a Planker, Rodney!'

Started to added more sheets ply in diminishing sizes. and then down to 1cm planks for the bow. Unfortunately this did not work out as the planks were only 0.4m and were too flexible and were not being supported enough by the frames.
So rip it all off the bow and use sheets again but changed from rectangular to triangular, this enable the frames to support the ply.

Found I'm allergic to superglue fumes.

After 2 years with little progress, too many model boat projects. I give you a update, basically sanded and filled the hull and foamed the bow.

Added 3x rudder posts, and 6 exhaust ports.
sprayed hull with primer, to help define shape of hull as can be confusing with multiple ply pieces.
Refill base of hull, will do sides next.

Removed hull from building rig, it is much lighter now.
Put reinforcements on the corners of the transom and cut off excess aluminium from the shaft support struts inside the hull.
Roughly trimmed edge of hull.
Applied some grain filler, once dry will sand down with fine sand paper and apply a primer then see what needs attention.

Added Saltwater cooling inlets and outlets, these are just marked positions at the moment, basic scoops will be added in the centre four positions between the propeller shafts. two inlet forward and two outlet astern.

Please note only for PT 103 to 196,PT 314-318 and PT 362-367.

The information is in a pdf document called '

Due to the above cannot post diagram.

Basically the centre engine has two inlet scoops and two outlet scoops (same scoop but face opposite direction) the side engines only appear to have one inlet and one outlet each (but there is a complexed control panel and each scoop has a on/off valve. lot of heat exchangers/ oil and exhaust coolers).

In real scale
Main engine outlets are 11+7/8in towards the bow from frame 61
Main engine inlets are 7+1/4in towards the stern from frame 55
Side engine inlets are 13in towards the stern from frame 47
Side engine outlets are 3+1/2in towards the bow from frame 52
I estimate the Side engine inlets and outlets are 20in from the side engines centre line.

Shaped the 3 rudders to approximate the originals, but did not taper the thickness too drastically as these are resin, with a weight advantage over metal, but not as strong.
(note one of the original goals of the build was to keep the boat light) they still need some modification.

Shape derived from https://www.pt-boat.com/rudder/rudder.html

The shape was scaled up to fit the square resin elliptical rudders used as blanks.

Side on view after another primer coat, of the hull.

Hi there,
Started a few tasks
a) Constructing the 6 lightweight exhausts out of
ABS/Styrene, used a photo of a plastic kit as a guide, still some
more work to do on them, they need butterflies on all transom
pipes and 3 bands across each silencer, then need to be fixed to
the transom, painted etc. They are not perfect but what is?
b) Cut out templates for the boat's stand that is only the start,
I do not like building stands for models, I am not sure why.
c) Fixed on water scoop positions with epoxy resin. Will put in scoops
and outlets in the centre 4 positions have pre drill holes to mark
positions inside the hull for when I add the pipework.
d) Sanded the boat down again, ready for more primer!
