Hi Jon
Thanks for the update. The links (3) will give you some useful guidance and pics so hope you find them useful. With all your prevoius experience and as a carpenter you should have no problem with the build and the carpenters in my club put all our models to shame with their skills. A working model will need to have the internals sorted before you put the deck on and if you decide to do a detachable keel that will need to be factored into the equation. I also added a motor and that also needs consideration early on. When you receive the hull please share your plans for construction and we can help you avoid any problems on the way. Exciting times and I hope the delivery is not delayed as happened with my recent large hull purchase.

Sorry I am building Katie as a sailing boat and did wonder if I would need to extend the keel.

Thanks Jon

HI, Thanks for the information I will be very eager to look at your link as i realise I will probably need some help when the boat finally arrives. I have built various models and part way building a model railway but that is on hold till I move house. I am now retired and a carpenter by trade so ok with woodwork and just finished building a workshop in my father's garage so plenty of room. I will look up your link when get home and look forward to looking at your build.

Hi Muskrat
I am pleased to hear that you have purchased a Pilot boat and intend to start building shortly. I built a Cariad pilot cutter several years ago and we build and sail all types of sailing vessels at my club. I notice you mention you are new to building model sailing boats and it would help if you could advise what modelling experience you posess so we can give advice relevant to you skills. Are you building this as a sailing or static model? I built from a hull and plan and my model is very similar in deck layout to the Katie. Sails well but on my large sailing lake I had to add an external bolt on keel when sailing. If you type Cariad in the Build Blog section on this site you will see details.

Sail and mast rigging

Hello Muskrat,
Pleased to hear that the arrival of your Pilot Cutter kit is imminent. Being from South Wales, I have a soft spot for these craft although by the time I was wandering around the docks, they had been replaced by tug like craft, but of course there were some privately owned, 'Frolic' and 'Cariad' for instance. I, like others, look forward to your blog of the build. Best of luck.

Cheers, Nerys

Yes Jacko, they're chainplates, but quite elaborate ones for most working boats.

Cheers, Nerys

Sail and mast rigging

Hi Muskrat,
Welcome to the site, we are all here to help you in any way possible. Yes, as others have said, those are chainplates, they would have been bolted through the planking and frames, and their purpose is to provide somewhere for the main shrouds holding up the mast to be anchored. I have made several model Thames Barges and use strip brass to make the chainplates. Holes drilled to fasten to the hull, then a hole near the top for a shackle to be fastened. Most traditional craft were similar in this.

All the best, Nerys

Muskrat welcome to the site.
As you are a youngster I'm sure that us older members will look forward to your build.
And of course you should ask the Queen of all things sailing Nerys.
Keep posting, and asking questions it's how we all learn.
Cheers Colin.

Hi Muskrat.
Welcome to the site.
Interesting project.
I’m afraid I can’t help you as I do not know much about sail boats but suggest that you contact Nerys amongst others who have invaluable knowledge on sailing items.
We all look forward to a build blog and updates on this one.
Keep it coming.

Sail and mast rigging

HI I am a new member and new to building model sailing boats. I have just ordered a Sarik model's Bristol Pilot Cutter Katie 12th scale boat Hull and plans. I have been looking at the parts for what I will need to finish this project. I am no youngster at 69 and the first question I am stumbling on is on sides of the Hull there are on mine three metal brackets bolted top to partly down the Hull and at the top of them the rigging that supports the mast is fixed too. Can anybody help with what they are called and can I buy or have to make them.
