Here is the second one, this one, already from the skeleton, checking the frames, presents some problems.
With the laying of the paper planking I will see if it is a small mistake (for which it will be enough to ignore one or two frames) or if it will be necessary to redo the drawing better (without haste and more calmly).
This paper model idea was not a good idea.

As for the other two central lifeboats I thought of creating paper models to check if the hulls were correct.
Instead of checking it on the computer, thinking it would be quicker, I thought that making a paper model would save me time.
I made a big mistake because it took a long time.
Here is the first one.
The planking is missing (which I will make in paper) but already from the frame it seems quite coherent.
The keel and frames are made by overlapping several layers of cardboard with a thickness of 1/5 mm (0.2 mm).

Tell me Alessandro,
Are you actually using tiny pieces of brass to make those tiny rudders👍!?!
(and I think we us the same scissors)

As for the central lifeboats, here is one of the three:
The one from Mantua Model (M36479).
Being a kit, it has the keel and the frames already drawn and pre-cut.
Not having to draw the hull yourself means saving a lot of time. Here is the skeleton made in a few minutes.
I think it will come out well but I noticed that it is slightly long for the position it should occupy on the deck.
So if I manage to make the other two lifeboats well, this one will be discarded (even though completed).

Good evening to all naval modelers.
I'll update you with some pictures.
In this first message you can see how I'm proceeding with the rudders of the lifeboats.
I tried to be as accurate as possible (as much as possible with the 1:60 scale) because the rudders will be exposed and will not be covered by the tarpaulins.
I used my method: 0.5 mm layers of wood overlapped and glued with a central layer of plastic. You can't see it but it's there and it gives the structure a lot of resilience. If there hadn't been this plastic layer, the rudder bar would have already broken a long time ago, given all the accidental knocks it received.
I'm studying the covering. Here's a draft of the shape of the tarpaulin to cut out.

Hi Ross, this is one of the most interesting parts of your project (which I already consider among the most interesting and complex currently in progress).
If you remember, we estimated the displacement of JockScott's tanker (partly for fun, partly because he wanted to know this data) before he could carry out tests in the water.
Logically, several empirical tests can be done with the hull complete and the waterline defined; however, knowing how to calculate the displacement and other data is a skill that I admire a lot.
I remember someone wondering what the point of doing these calculations was. For me it was essential to know the maximum displacement because (not having a kit or a reference project) I had to know how much weight I had available to insert motors, receiver, batteries, servos, winches, axles, ballast etc. etc. without sinking the ship.
I hope that when you start these procedures you will have the patience and kindness to describe them step by step and in detail, inserting many explanatory photos, because I want to learn too.
I will certainly ask you questions, because these topics always arouse my curiosity and fascinate me a lot.

Hello Alessandro,
Yes you are correct.
I must calculate the displacement of my Bluenose
When I find my DISLACEMENT VOLUME, I will use the DISPLACEMENT VOLUME and the WEIGHT OF THE UNBALLASTED HULL with ballast added, to calculate the CENTRE OF BUOYANCY.
When I find the CENTRE OF BUOYANCY from the DISPLACEMENT VOLUME, I will use that to help establish the CENTRE OF GRAVITY (the length of fin, with the ballast bulb, on the keel, and its position fore and aft on the keel)
When I have the CENTRE OF BUOYANCY and the CENTRE OF GRAVITY, I will use that to establish the META CENTRE, and the stability of the sailboat. (AREN'T YOU GLAD YOU ASKED😁).
When I did this 53 years ago. it took all summer with a slide rule and paper and pencil. In 3 days now with the computer, I have calculated a third of the buoyancy calculation. The remainder of calculations are just simple equations for a few more days. Keep asking questions. One day you will find a flaw in the process, before I do

Hi RossM, sorry I didn't reply earlier.
Thanks for the kind words.
I'm curious: "I am trying to calculate the displacement of a keel boat". Translating this sentence, I couldn't understand well what you have to find. Please explain.
I don't know if I can actually help you (I saw that you don't need it at all) but I like to participate.
Do you mean that you want to know the displacement (total weight) of your Bluenose schooner?

Alright, enough of the pirate games and back to work. I will always marvel at your art work at that scale👍
I WILL get back to you about lifeboat plans. I am trying to calculate the displacement of a keel boat⛵. The Augean Stables are an easier task than than these calculations☹️

Good evening to all the naval modelers.
While I complete the side lifeboats (I'm starting the rudders and the tackles) I want to build the central lifeboats.
I printed the sheets with keel and frames to transfer them to wood.
Since I didn't want to spend more time to double check the projects on the software, I will make some test models in cardboard and paper.
I prefer to do it this way because I don't want to find out too late (after having used wood and a lot of time) that there were errors in the hull of the lifeboats.
In any case, I will build three lifeboats, the third is the one from Mantua Model (last three images attached).
In the end I will choose the two that I like the most out of all three.

I now see that HOOK and Pirates of the Caribbean borrowed liberally from this⛵
. . . and ROBIN HOOD, MEN IN TIGHTS, & DUELLING CAVILIER scene in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, from FRA DIAVOLO
Come for the model boats, stay for the history🤓
I have to find it in Italian.
I've loved this since I was little. In addition to two giants of cinema, the comedy is a successful classic.
Many comedies are set in Italy and many are by Italian novelists (including some of Shakespeare's comedies and tragedies), this one is set in Italy but Fra Diavolo is a character who really existed.

Yes! It’s the famous British actor Robert Newton as Blackbeard the pirate. He also played Long John Silver in Treasure Island. But, most importantly he is considered the inventor of Pirate speech!

What movie is this scene from and who is the protagonist of the photo?

Hello everyone.
I finished the hull of the second lifeboat and I'm painting them both.
I'll make the rudder and then I'll position the canvas somehow.
In the meantime I'm finishing the drawings for the other two lifeboats that can be placed in the center of the deck.
I'll only put some photos, skipping some construction steps, because they are practically identical to the first. They came out almost identical.
Verniciarte they seem much nicer, I'll show them to you soon.

Modello RC scala 1/60, di piroscafo armato a goletta, liberamente ispirato alle cannoniere classe US
Hello everyone.
Hello all modelers.
I have to apologize because I made a mistake.
When I read the messages of this forum that arrive to my email, I read them quickly and I understand more or less the meaning but I don't trust my poor knowledge of the English language so I use Google Translate.
To do it quickly I open several folders (if I use the PC) at the same time and translate everything, then I copy and paste in the various topics, this time I evidently pasted a translated text on a message to send by mistake.
With haste you make many mistakes.
Now I have recovered the right message and I have re-edited.

Good evening or good morning to all the ship modelers in the world.
I decided to make the second planking, I finished it (I don't regret the choice, strange!).
It was 6 grams now 9 grams, but it is more robust, it's fine.
I started painting the external hull.
I will certainly have to make the rudder but I am still undecided whether to put the canvas or do the internal part with all the details (including oars).
While waiting to decide this and decide whether to color or leave the wood exposed and then which colors to choose, I will start the twin lifeboat.
Any information, opinion and advice (especially on coloring) is welcome.

Yes Ross, you are right the next model (I don't think I will resist making it even though I don't have room to put it) will be of a larger scale.
Hello to all naval modelers.
I have finished the first planking of the lifeboat.
In the sequential photos you can see the construction phases.
It is roughly the same method I use for ships.
In this case the difficulty was greater due to the very small dimensions.
I preferred to choose 2 mm wide strips because, despite the greater difficulty, they were in scale. 2 mm correspond to 12 cm wide boards (very consistent with reality).
I regretted having chosen the thickness of 0.5 mm, too little.
Before knowing and using the strip bending pliers, I chose strips of minimum thickness to have fewer problems with the curvature.
This old habit conditions me and still follows me today.
I should have bought 1 mm thick strips (they would have allowed me more margin for sanding).
Now I am undecided whether to make the second planking or not.
What do you think?
After sanding I realized that the hull came out well, it does not need any filler (I never use it) to correct depressions or imperfections.
This is in favor of the choice not to make the second planking, also I would save precious time.
However the hull is really light and slender.
The strips are very thin to begin with (0.5 mm) but they were further reduced with sanding.
Holding it in your hand is impressive for how thin the hull is. Also looking at the hull against the light it seems almost transparent.
Currently it weighs just 6 grams and is 13 cm long.
Those who have followed the construction of this 1:60 scale model from the beginning know that I am very careful to position the weights high up. the lifeboats will have to be very light.
I think I will spend more time to strengthen the structure.
I think I will make the second planking and perhaps I will resin the interior.
If the epoxy resin I bought 12 years ago hasn't expired (do you know if they expire?) strengthening the hulls is always a great idea for me.
Without using fiber but by brushing the inside of the hull directly with epoxy resin you get a very hard shell, very resistant without appreciably increasing the weight and bulk.
On the outside I will only use paint.
I still have to do the edge of the gunwale, the oarlocks, the floorboard, the rudder and the seats. I'm still undecided whether or not to put the cover sheet.
In the last photo you can see roughly where the dinghy will be placed (suspended on the outside with special curved supports, which I will have to study).

Hi RossM.
In addition to my lifeboats (which I will illustrate shortly because I have finished the first planking) you can evaluate these here. I put the links at the end.
They are easy to build kits, quite beautiful, but at a very low cost.
Unlike my projects (which I can make to you in the size you want, maintaining the proportions) these are of fixed lengths.
However, there are different sizes and shapes and you could find the one that suits you.
The first link is useful because it groups all the lifeboats and makes your search easier.
The other two links are directly from the manufacturers.

I looked around to see if I could find interesting about a 19 century lifeboat. I though it was unlikely that I would find a photo of one. Then I ran across this.

The sure way to succeed is, just try one more time
Hi Ross, in addition to the one I am building I am planning to build other lifeboats for the same RC model.
These will have different shapes and lengths and will be positioned on the deck.
For the moment I have only drawn the hull, I have not yet obtained the frames and the keel from it for the next cut, but I intend to see if you like the aesthetics of the shape and if it could be right for you.
Unlike the ones that go on the sides suspended outboard, this one is shorter and wider, the stern is straight and not curved.
If so I can easily send you the file (pdf, dwg or other), scaling it to the size that is most useful to you.

Thank you very much CommodoreH, your observation is very insightful and you anticipated me, in fact I wanted to ask some questions about this.
Of this type there will be two lifeboats at the sides of the ship, suspended on special curved supports.
In this case the two lifeboats will be facing upwards normally and not upside down.
At this point you will not only see the hull but also the internal part.
However, I can avoid doing all the details of the internal part if I decide to put the covering sheet.
The cover is more realistic because it is unlikely that a ship will go out to sea with open boats.
However, we modelers can do as we like and we have a thousand ways to justify ourselves.
If I want to take care of the internal part down to the smallest detail and show it (to enhance the work), we can imagine that the cover had just been removed for any reason (perhaps to lower it into the water, for overhaul or other).
And here we come to the questions.
Since I'm creating from scratch, I have to do the same thing for the lifeboats as for the ship.
Research as many images and drawings as possible to understand how they were made and create something historically reliable.
I ask you if you can share images and/or drawings of lifeboats with canvas and lifeboats without canvas (relating to the period of the second half of the 19th century).
In the first case I want to understand how the sheet was shaped (it seems to me to make a sort of zig zag on the edge of the lifeboat) and how it was tied.
In the second case I want to understand how the interior was made (seats, flooring, oarlocks, etc. etc.).
I have already collected something but not much.
I trust in you.

Alessandro, don't worry about my question, you found your own solution.
Hold onto your offer of plans for the lifeboat, I might need it. The BLUENOSE has 2 small boats on board. I haven't reached that step yet
Continued from previous post.
The same method I followed for the keel I used for the frames.
In order to have a guide for the cutter and sandpaper, the paper drawings of the frames were positioned in front and behind for the frames themselves (only for those that needed to be tapered).
I pre-cut the internal part of the frames because later it would have been very difficult if not impossible, once the hull was finished.
I left the internal part as a support (even if pre-cut) because when I make the planking I will need a fairly solid frame (only the rib would break in my hand).
I forgot to do this before gluing frame no. 6. I tried to fix it but I ruined it a bit.
The difficult part was also assembling the frames and keel precisely.
By the way, if I make a lifeboat that I like, if someone is interested and likes it, if they need it for their ship model, I can send them the pdf file. I can make it to the length they want. Of course for free.
