Where do you build your models?

Great photos of all the work shops/spaces. I wish my work bench was as organized as some and than again mine looks like a tornado came thru when I am in the middle of a project.
I am very fortunate to have 2 separate car garages attached to the house, one is 10x20feet and the adjoining one is 16x24feet. Both are heated and air conditioned. the smaller one is used for a small portable spray both vented to outside, computer area, heavy duty work bench with metal fabricating benders and presses.
The larger one has a 4-post drive on car lift which I store my 1940 Ford coupe when when I work on it or just storge. Leaves plenty on floor room when it is up. Also contains my metal working shop with a Bridgeport mill, Southbend lathe, drill presses, grinders, sanders, air compressor, storage, and most importantly my model making area for both boats and 1/4 scale R/C controlled trucks and trailers.

I can only build on the kitchen table, with my wife’s permission. Takes many hours to finish a model!!!!

Where do you build your models?

Hi my shed / workshop is at the end of the path in the rear garden. All wood, I designed it and this is its second installation. It has insulation inside and then 3/8ths thick wood planking. When I moved I abandoned the old floor as it gave way too much and bought 3 off 8 x 4 feet, 3/4 inch sheet ply. You can see my workshop is 8 x 12 feet.
The insulation came via a friend who worked at the building research establishment not far away. He said it had come from an old paddle steamer which was being possibly refurbished but the various sheets about 2 inches thick, had been at the establishment since the year dot! And that was over 30 years ago now.

I opted for the roof having a peak as I wanted to be able to rig a yacht on a bench which I can just about do. I have cheap double glazing and it is nice and warm there in the cold months.
The strong bench came from refurbishing the kitchen and I sourced the 2 sets of drawers direct from a kitchen cabinet manufacturer all to my size requirements and they have functioned very well.
Power is delivered from a RCD unit, via my garage.

The over hang was intentional so that I could have some hanging baskets and the photo shows the current flowers, all kindly supplied by my son in law each year.

I have an audio amplifier and speakers (saved back from a previous surround sound TV). I play audiobooks, free from the local library, which blots out my tinnitus but enables me to get on with boat building.

I am not a tidy person but I can just close the door behind me and know where everything is when I return. There is most of a 'OO' guage railway around the walls which I am also working on.

Hermank: The total shed is 54ft (16.459M) by 75ft (22.86M), so 4050 Sq Ft or 376.25 Sq Meter.
However, the workshop portion is 15ft (4.572M) by 30ft (9.144M) so it is 450 Sq Ft or 41.8 Sq Meter.
The workshop I keep at 55 degrees F (12.78 degrees C) in the winter. But I have it on a smart thermostat, so I can turn it up before I go there to work on something.
The remaining portion of the shed which is used for storage, is kept at 40 degrees F (4.444 degrees C) unless I need to work out there on something too large for the workshop. If needed, I use portable LP bullet type heaters to warm that area for working.
And, yes, I do realize how fortunate I am to have that space ....

AlessandroSPQR: In full disclosure, I tidied it up for the pictures. I do try to put stuff back in place when not being used, but during a project it can sometimes look like a tornado hit it, LOL.

The space is also used for my personal auto and lawn equipment maintenance, and repairs for household items.
So far my collection resembles "The Island of Misfit Toys". I've picked up several boats that are old builds and have been neglected. I'm giving them the TLC they need, hoping to bring them back to their former glory. Once I get enough practice/ experience I intend to take on a full build.

Great, I'm delighted that you've taken on this topic. I find it very interesting to see how other modellers live and work in their workshops.
It doesn't look as tidy in my workshop as it does in the pictures.
Before I got the trailer, I worked in the garage in summer and in our very small cellar in winter. The trailer measures 2 x 3 metres. So it's not that big either, but it's big enough for me. Any machines that don't fit in are stored in the garage, right next door. I can open the window and the walls and roof are insulated with glass wool.
The stove pipe is the original pipe. It's no longer in use, but it had to be fitted again. I have now installed an electric heater. The whole trailer is made of wood, so I don't want to light a fire in a stove, and the ventilation wheel in the front wall works perfectly. I'll take some pictures of my workbench in the next few days, it looks like a tidy mess now.

I do my building work in my bedroom/mancave but I do have to do clean and vacuum after the session and and if I used to glues etc the window is open. Spraying etc is done in the garage.

Well done conversion on the old trailer!

When you removed the old walls did you add insulation when putting the new walls on?

I could see a skylight in the roof and a roof vent like the type found on camping trailers/caravans.

Does the window open to allow ventilation?

About My Work Area:

My work area is in the basement, just inside those tall basement windows. The space also has the water heater and furnace for the house. I can open one window to get fresh air another small sliding window goes to the small storage garden shed, allowing for cross ventilation if needed.

Being a room in the house, it is heated and has A/C though the later is not needed very often in that room.

When the shop was created, we added sound insulation to the ceiling and walls. We also installed a metal door with a window to allow my wife to see me , without disturbing if working on a machine. The door also keeps noise out of the other basement areas and the shop can be locked when little kids are visiting.

...to tell the truth I also have a tool shed that I use when I paint or put resins. However I cannot leave in there any ship models or tools and equipment due to the possibility (or rather very high probability unfortunately) of theft. Furthermore in winter it is cold to work in (you can stay in it but it is not at all pleasant) and in summer it is an oven (absolutely unlivable, even for a few minutes).

I'm not as lucky as those of you who are allowed to claim space in the house. But I am fortunate enough to have a Shed a few miles away, where I get to determine the use of space. I've built a 15' X 30' heated workshop / boat storage area in one corner.
So far my collection resembles "The Island of Misfit Toys". I've picked up several boats that are old builds and have been neglected. I'm giving them the TLC they need, hoping to bring them back to their former glory. Once I get enough practice/ experience I intend to take on a full build.

Hi Nick.
When I saw the photos of this fantastic mess I envied you.
For me that is a paradise for modelers.
My dream is to have one or more rooms dedicated to DIY.
I would definitely put:
An area for electronics with: soldering iron, solder sucker, bench power supplies, testers, components of all kinds, batteries, etc. etc. with the various specific tools.
An area for mechanics: drill press, lathe, milling machine, etc. etc. with the various specific tools.
An area for carpentry, jigsaws, circular saws, electronic fretsaw, laser cutter, etc. etc. with the various specific tools.
I made my first wooden ship only with a cutter and sandpaper, then I started buying the various tools.
However I don't have a dedicated room and from time to time I have to take them out and put them away at the end of the job.

Nice trailer! I use two spare bedrooms, one for building and one as a machine shop. Also got 3D printers and a laser cutter in another room...

Where do you build your models?

Hello
I wondered where other forum members build. In the basement, in the garage, in the attic, in the kitchen or in the living room? I build my models in the construction trailer. I bought the construction trailer (built around 1962) a good 5 years ago and then completely restored. I renewed all outer walls and interior walls. Now he has been ready for a good 3 years and I am fully satisfied. Here are a few more pictures before and after.
