Have I answered this question before? maybe somewhere else?
I always use a tightly woven cotton called "Ticking". Any store selling cloth will have it. Made to line pillow cases to stop feather coming through.

hI new to this site, just wondering If someone can give me the heads up, I'm looking for some light weight and waterproof materials for the sails for a Thames barge,cheers Lee.
