OK. Look forward to the 2.4 info with interest.👍
For starters; what makes are they?
"they are from some of the other boats I have, at present I have 1 set up for each boat."
OKaay. Do they all work OK with their 'respective' boats?
If so then it looks like there may be summat wrong with the Commander setup.🤔

I'll have to think about the offer Doug, as they are from some of the other boats I have, at present I have 1 set up for each boat.
But I have recently acquired some new 2.4GHz sets. Just need to get my head round how to get a single transmitter to operate different receivers, as I have 6 extra receivers but not sure if they are compatible.
Will have to let you know what I have, as I haven't had a good look at what came in the box yet. (Came from free cycle).

"Switching the 40mhz set up on and triggering the mike gives weird servo movements."
Not really surprised at that Colin, if you fired up a 5 to 25W CB set in the same room!
Pressing the mike tit can also produce a sharp 'click' pulse which is transmitted by cheap CB sets and the like. This is suppressed in more expensive professional sets.
Also typical for CB type SSB TXs when you trigger the mic the build up of the RF output can be unstable and all sorts of spurious is generated.
Nevertheless the power output of your CB set could easily overwhelm the RC receiver anyway.
Whatever; fit the 2.4Gig set (or the 27Meg if you want to stay vintage👍) and Go Go Go😊
Maybe we can do a trade for the 40Meg set? I still use 'em with my subs😁

Thinking back, I had similar problems with my big tug last year, and no one else was on 40mhz that day but boat kept turning and reversing all on its own whilst I was trying to set a straight course at medium forward throttle.

Hi Doug,
Have tried all four of my 40mhz fm handsets and 3 different receivers and get the same result on all sets.
No problem with 27mhz fm and am.
Also clear on 2.4GHz. Just tried my old 1970's cb 40mhz am/fm sidebander and getting a lot of broadband interference. Switching the 40mhz set up on and triggering the mike gives weird servo movements.

"The motor is the Taycol you rebuilt for me."
Still with the suppressor caps I trust!
Sounds like you may have a problem with that 40Meg set.
Try using two entirely different channels.
That might confirm that the one you used for rudder then throttle has a problem.
Cheers, Doug 😎
BTW: How was the RX antenna installed? Length?
Separate RX battery or BEC? BECs can sometimes cause such problems by conducted EMI along the wiring🤔

Hi Doug, thanks for the reply, I tried swapping the channel but then the throttle played up.
I even changed the crystals. And handsets.
But all 40mhz fm frequencies played up.
Tried the 27mhz set from my big launch and no problems.
So I'll put the 2.4GHz set in.
The motor is the taycol you rebuilt for me.

Hi Colin,
No worries!
Servos don't care or even know what the RX is up to whatever the frequency band😊
All it wants is the usual pulse train that the RXs spit out.
Re the interference:
I trust all brushed motors in the boat are properly suppressed?
Try the servo in a different RX port.
Also make sure that the rudder servo (and RX😉) is as far away from the motor, ESC and power wiring as possible.
Last resorts; ferrite rings on the servo and ESC signal wires and/or twisted cable instead of the standard flat cables.
What do your neighbours get up to then that might interfere?😮🙈

Have now given it a 3rd coat, looks like it will be enough, I will have to wait until tomorrow to check. I have also painted the steering wheel, and varnished the dashboard and scuttle.
When it is hard enough I will mask the deck and hull so I can prime the cabin sides and top.
The removable roofs can also be primed and painted.
By the way Doug, as I now have some 2.4GHz sets I think I will use one instead of the 40mhz sets, I was testing my set up and found something was interfering with the steering channel??? (could be my neighbours at the camp). Do I need to buy a new servo or will it be okay with the old original.

Poundland Hereford is now out of bond together, I bought the lot.
So started back on the modelling again this afternoon.
Finished the cockpit windscreen frames, fitted the dashboard and steering wheel support, cleaned up the decks using cellulose thinners and removed 60 years of grime, and put the first coat of varnish on the deck.
Will be putting at least 3 more coats of varnish before I paint the cabins and roofs.
Have decided to sort out the electrical and radio side while the varnish is drying, it needs at least 16 hours between coats, so 1 coat each day.
I also have to fit the steering servo and mount.
Cheers Colin.

Dear Nerys,
I'm sorry that I haven't mentioned Caroline's foot problems but with all that's been happening I forgot.
It seems that with this latest problem she has been coping very well and she is almost back to normal. Still some pain but she ignored it while helping with the granddaughter.
She thanks you for your concern and wishes you and Alice all the best, stay safe and well, Colin and Caroline.

Whilst having every sympathy for your grandson Colin, can I ask after your wife, it's not long since she was ill? Hope she has recovered well enough to cope whilst everything else has been going on.
If you are going to be seeing your grandson a fair amount before too long, why not get him started on a modelling project of his own rather than relying on the school. Even with a fairly simple model you would be able to teach him the proper way to use real tools. I know my son found it invaluable later on, when he started an apprenticeship, that he had been using proper woodworking tools from an early age. I say this not knowing what sort of tools he is allowed to use in school. My sister, a former teacher, tells the story of how she complained that the scissors issued to her class for craft work wouldn't cut and she was told that they couldn't let children have scissors that cut in case they cut themselves.
I think it's called elf and safety pins or something.

All the best, Nerys

BTW. My fireboat kit is a Norstar kit, it's been sitting in the attic for 25 years, can't remember when it was purchased, but I think about 1970.

Thanks Doug,
Grandson's progress is going well, but he is upset as the doctors told him that he can't go to school till at least October. Also he can't play his usual games outside and must stay off the trampoline.
He must not put any weight on the injured leg for at least 6 weeks. No bike riding, no football and all the other stuff kids enjoy.
We will have to ask the school for an update on the boat as I've been out of contact since October.
But will definitely be checking the progress and reporting back.
We have just had a full day with the family and I can now stop worrying about him and get back to the modelling.
Thank you and all the other members who have sent me such encouraging messages.

I have models that were built by my grandfather, father and me, my son has a couple that he built and my grandson is involved with the model at his school.

You can have them back if you like Nerys😂

"Perhaps they were self dissolving or something."
It's all part of
The Great Planned Obsolescence Conspiracy Nerys.
Anything you stick together with them is planned to come apart again after 6 months.😮
Thus forcing you to buy more glue to stick 'em back together again.😠
BTW: NEVER use glue Activator or Accelerator! That just shortens the holding time to 3 months. Then instead of dissolving the glue goes brittle and falls apart.🤔

I buy the Bond Together in quantity too, depending on their stock, usually clearing the shelf. Can't be bothered going into Poundland too often despite the fact I like their boxes of Turkish Delight.

Hi Nerys, the pictures are mine, I wonder how it happened.
I see you know the glue from poundland, I usually buy 10 at a time as I hate travelling into the town.
It would be great if you could get it online.
The other glues apart from the industrial araldite were bought for me while we were in lockdown.
BTW. I collected my grandson from the hospital this afternoon and took him home, the physio told him as soon as he could walk up and down the ward with his crutches he could go home, it was great to see him smiling again. I treated him to a big Lego star wars set for being so brave.
He said now that he has his bionic leg we can form a club, as both grandads have bionic knee replacements.

Here are some of the glues I use. The one I prefer isn't pictured as the last empty one went in the bin. It's called bond together and it's only available in poundland shops. Another poundland one is the Tommy Walsh one.
The rest are expensive especially the self mixing types.
The last one is £18 if bought singley. But I used to get bulk packs through my old works. Hope that helps, the bond together makes the best portholes.
Cheers Colin.

That's right Nerys,
It's my preferred glue, better than a lot of the expensive brand names, the only other 2pack epoxy glue that works as well is industrial araldite.
It is great for glazing port holes, I lay the port hole frames on stretched cling film and dribble the mixed glue into the opening and leave it to set, lift off from the film and I have perfectly clear glazed port holes. Works well with brass, plastic, white metal and wood.

Colin, when you say 'the Poundland glue', do you mean their two part epoxy ? I've been using that for a while, certainly saves money and it's as good as, if not better than some others. The only snag with it I find, is that with my arthritic fingers, it's difficult to squeeze out, needs a lot of pressure pushing down on a board. How do you get on?
Pleased to hear the good news about your grandson by the way.

Thanks Doug, you probably could have sailed the North Sea on my relief.
Just got to get some balsa and more 1.5mm ply. Plus replenish my epoxy glue.
I had to try using expensive gorilla epoxy
as that was all I had been able to get.
It's not as good as the poundland glue and takes too long to set.
I am about to try making the bridge windscreen frames and support using 25mm x 3mm mahogany strips salvaged from a slatted screen.
Most of the replacement ply used in this refurb is recycled from whatever I was able to scrounge from neighbours.
At least with the lockdown everyone seems to be having a clearout.

Looks like I will be able to sleep normally tonight, grandsons operation went well and I am now waiting for himm to wake up and talk to us. The surgeon told us that if he responds to the physio instructions later today and tomorrow morning he will be able to come home tomorrow afternoon.
The bone has been sandwiched and pinned. No need for a cast, only a large dressing over the op.
Looking forward to seeing him and being able to visit him at home.
Thank you all for your support during my crisis, hopefully I'll be able to get on with the modelling on Monday as I am in need of more glue and paint, I think my local supplier is going to be opening Monday. I also need my wife back to help me with the finer detail work as my fingers are still not great.

Just did a video call with him and he said that he would be very brave and tell me about it tomorrow.
His only worry is that his friends won't know what happened to him if he can't go to school on Monday.
I got his teacher to video call him and she told him that the class will do a video call on Tuesday.
So he's no longer stressed and managed to give me a smile.

Work on modelling was suspended yesterday due my grandson being rushed to hospital with a fractured femur. They are going to operate in the morning, pining it?. They waited for a senior surgeon to decide whether to do it in Hereford or send him to Birmingham children's hospital.
I had to say sod the lockdown to take the wife to help with the granddaughter as my son has to stay with the boy until he is discharged.
And the daughter in law has to care for her parents who are both disabled.
