Yeah Rooky, Hamster buying made my sis smile as well😊 One good thing in these miserable times.

The aviation and travel restrictions stopped me getting over to UK for my Mum's 95th birthday on Wednesday😠

"how many rolls does it take to fill a hamster mouth?😁"
I'd rather not even think about it Pete, and certainly DON'T WANT TO MEET ONE big enough to get a pack in each cheek!!!!!😮

My sister reported the same from Nottingham UK Newby.
Hasn't started here (Bavaria) yet.
On my last trip to my local supermarket yesterday I kept nearly tripping over troops of guys and gals unloading cardboard boxes and pallets onto the shelves.
Only loo and K-rolls were limited to two packs per person.
Most supermarkets have 'Help wanted' signs up and the delivery drivers are working over-overtime!

"Just a word of warning A lot of on line supermarkets will not be taking on new customers."
That's what my sister found a few days ago Martin.🤔
She reported "all slots taken". Puzzled me at the time, had never heard of 'shopping slots'.
Next day she used the 7 to 8am 'Senior hour' and got everything she needed.
Hope they don't start that here; I'm a 'night owl' 😴
Just like you Nerys, so I guess poor 'old' Alice has another item on her 'To Do List'!

So far the only empty shelf I've seen round here was the loo roll and kitchen roll shelf. Nuts!
A fork lift driver recently posted a video (which then appeared all over the news) made with his mobile while driving around a huge central warehouse.
It showed millions of rolls on pallets stacked four or five high.🙄

This evening I'll be testing the exemption to the 'Stay at home' rule by visiting Gisela!
Wish me luck🤞
Stay safe and beat the bug folks!!
Cheers, Doug 😎
BTW They call panic buying 'Hamster buying' here.
Conjured up pictures in my mind of huge hamsters with their cheeks stuffed with loo rolls!😮
But then I'm just nuts😁

Has anyone had experience of shopping on line currently. Thought it might be the answer to this isolation business. First looks, I think Morrisons might suit me best, but I'd like to hear the experience of others.

Re - I have a couple of friends on holiday just now in NZ.
Probably safer here Graham, and if they are up North round Auckland for winter, there's no snow, not that cold, very little air pollution ( just lots of rain sometimes) and I'm sure they won't be too stuck for a hand if needs be. Plenty of space here and not that many people.😊 and now nobody else can come in for a while. Lucky they're not stuck in Italy!

Re Hi All - it struck me that the Model Boat community might be hit hardest of all
Quite true Peter and regarding the smoking thing, smoked myself for years but gave up about 15 yrs ago when the arms started going numb😁 I'd hate to think what would happen if you suddenly could have your young pre-smoking lungs back, - it would probably kill you! All ex or current smokers, asthma sufferers etc as you say, should be extra careful.

My ex boat anchor is an agency RN, and is at present stationed at the Auckland Airport covid 19 Boarder Health Protection And Control section, and recently had to go onto a packed plane from overseas (Argentina I think) in full space gear, to check all the passengers. Scary job to have to do and good on her for taking it on (gets paid $50/hr, free airport parking and meals).

Re hand sanitizer,(which is not soap)- apparently soap is just as good or better if properly used and a group here have found that Vodka and aloe Vera together is pretty good (and you can drink it as well😂). Time to get the old copper out and start boiling up some Lye soap😁 that'l kill anything! (most younger people probably have never heard of it) Can't see what's wrong with diluted washing detergent, (I keep a spray bottle in the car, works fine) Lots of old remedys will probably pop up if things get too bad.

The virus is not airborne so as long as you keep away from people, wear gloves, masks (around groups), wash hands after handling public stuff (remember EFTPOS machines, on checkouts etc, real filthy, probably never cleaned!, same as bank machines etc) and don't go out unnecessarily you're probably pretty safe. The more we talk about it, the more we will remember to be cautious, (as long as we don't get paranoid😁) Remember 6ft spacing around the boat ponds😊.

Sad to hear the news JB and Doug, about shopping problems. Here in Greater Manchester, most supermarkets opened at 7:00 am for elderly people,
and disabled, for the first hour, got everything we needed for a fortnight, but a lot were stockpiling,....idiots,
there is plenty for everyone if you do your normal shop.
Hope we all get through this trying time together.😊

Hi All - it struck me that the Model Boat community might be hit hardest of all - my old club in the UK average age is around 68 or so - with some very young members, so a guess would be something like 80% over 70..........
Think pretty well all of the clubs will probably be the same and even those who don't belong to one and have recently come back to the hobby tend to be retired........
There must be a lot of others also with lung problems like Doug and myself from supporting the Rhodesian & US tobacco industries for too long - (still going in Zimbabwe on a much smaller scale) - so we have to be very careful indeed as does Nerys.
Nerys is right that she runs a risk on every visit to the hospital - but she has no choice.
Hope the hospital is taking sensible precautions.
Think we should all try to take simple precautions to try and prevent any problems - but this idea of hoarding toilet rolls etc seems absurd .
A decent face mask and disposable gloves are a good start and if anyone wants I believe better half has a recipe for hand sanitizer since it also seems to have disappeared from the shops. If anyone wants I will try and post it here.
Take Care All

This over 70's self isolation/ stay at home business is all very well, but I'm still expected to go to the hospital for dialysis three times a week and in my opinion, I'm more likely to catch something there than anywhere else.

"Now hear this" (or news from the anti podes)
Lockdown in NZ as of last night, at least 2 weeks too late, but horseface reckons she's doing a great job!!🐴?? as we say here YEEEEEAH RIGHT! Sounded like a party political broadcast tonight, see if she puts a scarf on for this one ! Shelves getting stripped here as well, felt like a sandwich for tea tonight but no bread (second day running) might have to camp out to get in early. Supermarkets aren't stocking during the day now (worker health and safety). Many appliance stores have sold out of freezers as the rich hoarders needed something to put their loot in, (hope they get a power cut.👍👍👍😂)

Had to laugh as I went down the completely bare bread and noodle isles (plus soap, flour, panadol and cough medicines etc) because there is only so much you can hoard before you run out, and when you go to get more, - guess what, DUH.! There's still heaps of stock so I can't understand the mentality. Neighbor said he can always go to his mates farm where they have plenty of cows to eat,- mind you, if things get too bad there might be a lot of sheep and cow rustling going on! Bad enough already with the Indians being partial to the roadside rural lawnmowers (goats on a long wire runner) outside peoples properties. Most have now disappeared since a big influx of Fijian Indians and Asians a few years ago, hardly see one these days, (they do make a very nice curry😁)

Thought I might buy some paper face masks at the mega hardware store, - that whole big section completely stripped bare,- (even the $200 industrial chemical masks!? SOME PEOPLE,😂 unbelievable the way some people think! Any hoo, just have to see what happens and dress for the occasion, (so to speak) Air NZ is now in the poo and has just been given a big handout (50 odd big planes to park up, - regionals still going) 500 staff might be looking for work. The airline might be going to odd overseas places not normally serviced, to rescue stranded Kiwis, but that's just an idea at the moment.

Not to worry, if we can find a way to turn s..t into sunshine we'll all be just fine. Everyone suit up and take care.!😊

I was in Moscow in the mid eighties and remember the yards of empty shelves, in stark contrast to the overflowing Berioskas for the elite and western visitors! (Not so sure of the spelling after so long!)
There used to be 'shopping jokes' going around back then, e.g.

Man needs a tie for an important meeting,
he rushes into a department store, up to the first floor 'Gentlemen's Clothing' and asks to see some ties.
The assistant smiles sweetly and says
"I'm sorry sir, this is the No Shirts Department.
No Ties is on the second floor."

Generally the problem seemed to be not so much production problems but the decrepit distribution system of such a large country.
Cheers, Doug😎
PS How about buying a bread making machine?
Or maybe Alice can knock one up from an old record player, stainless saucepan and a couple of wooden spoons. Max 33rpm!!😁

We went out on Tuesday evening to do a normal weekly shop, bearing in mind what we had heard and seen on TV about panic buying.

It was a bit late, we usually do leave it until late evening, so there weren't many people around, as I had hoped, but the shelves were horribly bare. Reminded me of Moscow shops in the communist days. There was no bread at all, limited choice of milk, always buy a 6 pinter, but the biggest available was 2. Toilet rolls, choice of one variety, being put on the shelves, we were down to our last three rolls at home. Very little choice of meat, in fact nothing I went out for apart from a shoulder of lamb. No cooking oil. No potatoes and nothing I wanted in frozen veg. Had to make up with cake and biscuits.

All the best, Nerys

Just 'bruised'my wallet Doug, doing some discretionary grocery shopping, pre virus getting going here and the panic buying starting in earnest. Never seen so many trolleys bulging at the seams in a supermarket ever. Being a small country of around 4 kk we are probably going to get whacked pretty hard, as 1/3 of the pop is ancient (and I'm getting there slowly😁) Already got 20 supposedly confirmed with Chinbola already and we've just sent some newly arrived tourists home for not following the self isolating rule, dick heads. That's the sort of thing that could cause some one to die.

One good thing is, if the supermarkets run out, at least I have a choice of small boats to go fishing in (that's if the fish aren't staying indoors😊) The 2 trusty British Seagulls I have might get a bit of use wot! bit worried as they only have another 100yrs of use left between them😁!
Have a 15hp Chinese rice burner Yamaha copy as well, but trust the 50yr old Seagulls more. She'll be an interesting year that's for sure, and I don't think the virus will stop till it's done the rounds and people build up a bit of immunity. Hopefully it wont be too bad, but with winter and flu season coming on I'm not too optimistic!

They haven't mentioned how many people the flu killed world wide last year (1672 in UK last season, - 26,000 people in the UK were either killed or seriously injured and 1770 killed in vehicle crashes. 61,000 flu deaths in the US last year,- 500 in NZ last year, sort of puts it into context at the moment.

I'l be off to buy a few gross of masks tomorrow, already got my sack of garlic and vitamin c so should be good to go😁 No point worrying too much, just everyone be careful and stay away from any walking dead and crowds. Masks and plastic gloves look like being the new fashion accessories for 2020. 😎 Wearing my gloves and mask while typing this as recommended by admin😁

The safety and well-being of members is the number one priority for MBW. Like any responsible organisation, we wanted to reach out and update you on some of the steps we have taken:

From now on, all members must work from their sheds or garages, only leaving for food and model boat supplies. Servers are being cleaned every hour, all data / heated debates over 37.5C will be destroyed. Toilet roll is stocked up.

Please use antibac before posting and wear an N95 or higher mask in the forum areas 😷

On a more serious note, I do hope everyone is being sensible. I'm certainly trying to avoid busy places at the moment. My company has told everyone to work from home starting Monday. For those of you retired, I'd say the advice is even more important. I hope you all have supporting families during this uncertain time 😐
