The saga of the leaking Clive Puffer Several friends had mention to me that the prop needed to be above the water line so out came stuffing box mounted motor higher so prop shaft above water line & replace shaft & prop shaft . While doing all this It donned on me like a light going off that the rubber shaft was lower than the water line & I think water was entering up rudder shaft . Photo shows area where water was when it was in water & the tube for the rudder shaft was below that so added more stern depth .Made up another rudder shaft that is higher & tube is also now higher.

Chum444, is your "stuffing box" the size of the large diameter tube under the large filler and the rest of the shaft slips into the shaft tube? If so, the sealing area seems kind of small.

My preference is to have a fairly large sealing area. For example, using the attached drawing, the two ends where the shaft slip fits into are each about 5/8 inch long leaving a long void between the shaft OD and the tube's ID. [EDITED: this area is filled with the sealant lube.] Thus I have no problem with leakage when the entire shaft is below the waterline.

Also... as you can see in the photo, the prop shaft is horizontal and sits about 2 inches (50mm) below the waterline. No leaks if you make the stuffing box long enough and use the right sealant lube.

As promised A few photos & some members models in Spencer's pool Burlington. Some of the boats shown are from other model clubs mostly Toronto modelers so I can't mention names of members boats because I don't know their names. Still lots of time for sailing & the puffer still leaks so I'll put stuffing box on a steeper up angle above water line. I just love fixing a problem with my model boats.

Just a thought. Is your shaft log filled with a waterproof grease? I have a couple of models where the motor end of the shaft log is below the waterline. They are packed with waterproof grease which stops water incursion.

Photo shows construction of a grease reservoir.

SSMBC (Florida) model boat meet on July 21, 2024
Having missed a few model boat meets because of weather and health issues, I finally made a meet! Six of us enjoyed getting together mostly chatting. The day was clear and no breeze with made the 89F (32C) temperature seem a lot hotter. The Florida sun (same as yours but more aggressive)was brutal. Anyway, I am posting a few photos taken in the shelter. Trying to avoid the sun, I did not go on the dock to get some "in the water" photos.

Sure would like to see more pictures of the American Enterprise. Looks very close to the crew boat I bought off of FB market place. I couldn't resist the buy for only $40 bucks lm in the process of turning it into into a camcrahaft crew boat that in real life we turned into a CA Fish and Game patrol boat that I was the Motor Vessel Engineer on for 8 years.

Because I can't figure out how to download a video on this web site I just pause the video & photographed the image of my Yard Sale Find It was such a lovely Canada Day morning went to the pool & ran the model checked for leaks, balanced model with a little lead test O/K I did have a tiny leak which I think will be fixed up with a little hull paint. I'm having a seniors moment I wanted to post on Build Blog & I've tried to delete it from media post but can't

Garth, it looks like you could open the video and hold yout finger on it while it is playing, then press "download video" on the pop up screen. You can choose where to download your video to (SD card, ...). I tested this on my cell phone.

Italeri Vosper MTB
This weekend I decided to give my plastic kit conversion of the Vosper MTB an outing. I uploaded details of the kit, my conversion of it and some build photos to my harbour previously, when I first joined this site.

Hi Ronald, yes it will go more slowly as well. The main problem I have found in that conversion was trying to make it light. The injection moulded plastic is quite heavy and by the time the running gear is in you are struggling to keep the waterline accurate. Mine is a bit on the heavy side and noticeable when it is static as it floats with the black lower hull a little too deep. Probably because i used GRP sheet inside it which I would change if I ever did one again.

Hi Alessandro, yes in static trim it is a little low. I can probably use a smaller lipo and could probably afford to drop to 2cells (7.4v) rather than 3 (11.1v). That would help at the cost of a little speed. A test to do next time I take her out…

H.A.Kits Thames Slipper launch chase boat
Having got my slipper launch wet I mounted a GoPro hero9 on her and chased Rick's "Velsheda" around the lake for a while. Control system needs a bit of modification as I only have 2 hands but she was a great platform for "on water" video. Will sort the issues out and hoping to do better next time.😐

Another vid from my slipper. I have cut ventilation slots into the bonnets to try and keep the "workings" a bit cooler and she only tripped out once. A very light wind day but good practice for stronger stuff at some stage.😎

Yard Sale find
On the weekend spotted a yard sale . The older gentleman had restored a model he had built but the cat got to it . So because of his age he had decided to no longer have a hobby . We talk about model boats & stuff & he gave the wood to me & the 3 models . Future Build blog projects Maybe but wood is always handy to have in case power goes out.

I think that cat might make a nice …Careful Ron there are cat lovers out there …

Instead of trying to rebuild it, maybe keeping it as an “After the Battle” of Cats Bay mantle piece.

I have a cat and she like to investigate anything new that comes home so I have got to be extra careful. I have jus bought a 3D printer and currently making a bench that is cat proof as I can just imagine her dancing on the hot table. Wish me luck. Cheers Ian😍

H.A. Kits Thames slipper launch
I got a H.A. kits slipper launch to keep me occupied while waiting on delivery of my next J class yacht. I went a bit mad as I wanted to suss out different ways of building and finishing. I think it is a fabulous basic kit and I let my imagination run a little bit wild. Still some bits of jewellery to add but am going to get it wet first. Really happy with everything so far.....even the mistakes.

The Thames slipper launch got her bottom wet this morning🤓 Not enough rudder movement is the only issue. The 15amp speed controller quit after giving her some beans but to be honest its really isn't meant to be a planing hull. At scale speed she looks pretty good. I mounted a GoPro on a servo for a bit of fun but it was a bit too low down. Will sort these little issues but happy with the results so far.

Info on Smoke Maker
Was asked for more info . So here are a few photos . This mini humidifier uses water only to generate fake smoke no smelly baby oil & varsol odor 50%-50% mix for Graupner smokers .I get the power to run unit from the receiver battery port as the unit uses a USD port to make it work so I got a old servo & cut the wire off it removed the signal white wire & used the black & red wires to power up unit . I have to turn model on then power up the Humidifier to start fake smoke put the cabin on model & away we go. Make sure Positive & Negative are put in proper receiver slots Please don't damage receiver if it's plugged in wrong.
