About this boat

So I've got the Sea Urchin built to a point where it's ready for filling and sanding. I think I could have done better with the initial build but I'm still learning the terminology and techniques. I'll add a few photos tomorrow and tell you what I intend to do next hopefully If I suggest something wrong you folk will step in and point me in the right direction, wish me luck 😀

I must open my Sea Urchin pack and take a look at it.
The character full rudder that attaches to to outside of the transom is easy enough to hinge (I hope) but deciding where to place the operating rod to the steering servo will need some serious thought.
I have never seen a radio controlled Sea Urchin in use, so I need to consider the options.
The push/pull option with the operating shafts passing through the transom would be a good mechanical fix, but making them water - tight will be the problem !

Be interesting to see how you tackle the rudder. That in my Faun, which is a similar design and I guess size was a bit of a challenge!

I'm going to give that a go today after testing it out on some scrap, I don't want o be lumbered with spending time removing a failed attempt again.

A couple of the old/project boats that I have bought, people have used car body filler and built up above and below the shaft/around the keel and blended it away to nothing ahead of the tube exit point on the underside.
Whether or not that's a recommended option these days I do not know, but I have a few like that.

I’m very pleased with my choice of two car colours. Ford Ivory White and a BMW Mini metallic Cosmic Blue.

I’ve just done a float test after an initial build like yours. It leaked!
So I followed advice and used a two part epoxy on the outer joints of the prop tube. Then, having reduced the leaks a bit, I poured a tea cup of “Seal and Sand” IPE polyurethane wood glue. Any cheap white wood glue will work. Then over the next day I liberally brushed it all over the inside of the hull.
No leaks and ready to paint.
I hope that gives you a nice dry boat.

just having a few problems with the rather long exit of the prop shaft, try to get a smooth finish for the hull but the fibreglass option didn't work that well, have now removed it ?

I haven't decided on what colours to do mine either yet.
I've got plenty of time to decide though, got one or two others to get sorted first.

    That looks good Mike.😎
It's going to make a nice little model.
Have you any ideas on a colour scheme yet?

I built the original Aerokits version and have the new one still in its flat pack. Some significant differences between the two versions.....timber thickness and bow construction being two of them. Neither version in my view gave adequate details of how to hang the rudder. My original had two sections of brass tube Araldited to the transom with rudder pintles of bent piano wire. (wasn't a huge success). Mine also had a very low power Mabuchi motor as that was all that was available if you didn't go down the internal combustion route. (Recommended engines were the marine versions of the Davies Charlton Dart or Merlin).

Red, I will take some pictures tomorrow evening and post them for you.
Mine hasn't had radio control gear fitted before I don't think, so that's going to take some working out, how to get it all to fit and not have too much on display.

My Sea Urchin is still flat-pack in the plastic bag Will!
I bought it because I remember seeing it in the old Keil Kraft catalogues all those years ago and always thought it was a character full model that I would like to build.....one day!

I like the Sea Urchin, they're a nice little model.
I bought one in need of some repair a while ago.
Embarrassingly, I still haven't got as far as starting on that one yet.
Looking forward to seeing some pictures of yours.
