   Yes, generally it is rule of thumb for brushed motors that the diameter of the prop should not exceed the diameter of the motor case except say where you have a heavy slow running boat like a tug running a big prop where the motor is likely to be overworked and run hot.
   
   With brushless motors being more powerful they can run bigger props but personally I wouldn't go too much over the motor diameter. So for 28 dia. motor 35 prop would be Ok and for 35 dia. motor 40 prop would be Ok, especially where the type of boat has a turn of speed and the motor is running freely.

   Was once told a good starting point was that diameter of prop should be the same as but no larger than the diameter of the motor case if that’s any help. Looks like an interesting build.

   I would say the motor is about right, but the prop etc, I wouldn't know.
   Like you say, it's a starting point.

   The following is taken from SLEC website regarding the Sportsman.
   The one that they currently sell is the Mk2, with flying bridge, although the hull is the same as the Mk1 version, so the motor stats etc would still apply:

   Every day is a learning day, no matter how much you know. I have lots to learn still and have gained a fair bit of knowledge from the advice of others and just by searching/researching
   I've been flying planes for a good few years and nearly all electric. But, brushless power for boats is a bit harder to work out what's needed.
   I will check what my mate uses and let you know.
   Alternatively, If mempry serves me right, SLEC I think it is, sell a modern variation of the Sprotsman kit and do list a suggested motor, speed controller and Lipo battery for it. That would give you an idea and then you can research prices of equivalent gear on other sites etc after that. Thats what I have done.

   Will appreciate that. Brushless motors are a new beast to me, so still getting bearings on what size motors/props power what size boat. Same goes for lipo's, learning about those along the way too. I missed out on the birth of all these modern drive systems.

   They are a nice looking model, in my opinion.
   Motor wise, I'm not 100% sure as yet.
   I have a friend who uses pretty much the same motor, ESC and battery in all of his boats. It's not a huge motor and he usually runs either 3s or 4s batteries, sometimes 2s on some of his smaller craft. They all go well, some, EXTREMELY well.
   I will double check again what he's running in some of his of the same or similar length and let you know if you like.

    I agree, most of these older boats need work of some sort.
    
    No, I'm not, but i know someone who is.
    I was lucky enough to pick up a mk1 Sportsman last year.
    Mine also needs a little work here and there and I'm going to be converting it to brushless as well.

    Hi Will,
    Yes, it is the one from the recent eBay sale. I almost missed it, wife had me doing something in the kitchen and I remembered with about 10 seconds left to get a bid in. Didn't think I'd get it. Went up to Gateshead to collect yesterday.
    Needs a bit of work (don't they all), so it's in the queue for tlc. I'm not sure about the varnished superstructure, the wood stain is patchy close up.
