About this boat

Highlander is a Mountfleet kit and as the boiler and steam engine are both at the rear end, this leads to some problems regarding the layout of the steam plant, and the fact that the steam engine is in front of the boiler as opposed to behind. With the engine situated amidships a chain drive is required with shafts and bearings to the short prop shaft. As explained and shown with photographs in the build blog. The boiler is 3" x 6" and the engine is Cheddar 1/2" bore twin piston valve.

    Gary,
    Excellent build.
I think working out the problems we run into when building is a challenge we actually enjoy figuring out how to overcome.
I am looking forward to the maiden voyage I am sure you will share with us.

Hi Gary, nice work! I am building a Sealight, also from Mountfleet. It has a self built boiler, 3" x 6" vertical and an SVS 7/16" bore oscillator. I have managed to fit the lot in the 'scale' engine and boiler room. I am just fitting an automated boiler control system similar to the original Cheddar version. Hoping to have it finished before the end of summer...

It is a beautiful vessel. I expect you are going to experience ballasting issues with so much weight toward the stern and the steam header toward one side. I am sure you will figure it out and good luck.
