About this boat

Strip built kayak based on plans from the book "Strip built Sea Kayak" by Nick Schade. Built at 1/6th scale using traditional full sized strip building method.

All propulsion and steering by means of paddle (no prop!), with some assistance from the rudder. Original paddle motion was with motor driven mechanism, subsequently replaced with microchip controlled servo mechanism.

Kayaker is known as Katie!

    Hi Jacko,

There are many ways to achieve the desired motion. My original mechanism used a motor drive for the stroke and a servo to tilt the mechanism for steering with the paddles. I put the electronic/servo solution together as I wanted to improve the movement making it look more natural and less mechanical. It includes a servo to tilt the paddle from one side to the other so the paddler is leaning into the stroke. There is also a servo to feather the blades as they enter/leave the water as in full sized practice.

    Hi Herman’s,

No I haven’t reached that figure yet, maybe one day.... The 93 is a reference to my first boat as shown in my avatar.

    Thanks Cash,

The kayak is surprisingly stable in a breeze. I think it is so low on the water that most of the breeze goes over her head😆

The rowing boat is a different matter. The slightest breeze knocks it off course so it needs constant attention to row in an (almost) straight line.

That...is so COOL!! youve done a beautiful job on the kayak proper and the mechanics. I built an old Graupner Tina a few years ago, and while it worked, it struggled in the breezes we get here in Texas. Didnt think of adding a mixed in ruddder till well after I traded her off. Anyway, that boat makes me really appreciate your work. Bravo, sir!!
