Other Classic Fairey Builds

About this boat

In addition to the Huntress I'm building all the other classic Faireys at the same scale of 1:12. None of them are finished yet! 😁

The first of these was the Huntsman 28, followed by the Swordsman 33 (raised aft cabin version) and the Huntsman 31 aft cabin version - this started off as the full rear cockpit version called the Sport which was primarily intended for off-shore powerboat racing, but as I'd sold off my big 47" aft cabin version and my number of rear cockpit versions was increasing I decided to convert it to the aft cabin version mid-build.

Hi Sam, to add to what Bob has said, SLEC do a kit of the Huntsman 31 based on the bigger Precedent kit but at 47" is that too big? Sarik Hobbies do drawings and a short kit for a 24" model but I guess that will be too small?

If you can scratch build there are always the old drawings for a 31" model. If you search Sarik for Huntsman 31 it will throw up these drawings and the short kit I mentioned above.

    Hi samc,

If you are looking for a new kit to build over 30" long and with a rear cabin, you will probably need to keep checking on ebay or for some private sales because as far as I know there are no new kits of any Fairey Marine boat with a rear cabin in current production.

The last one's that I am aware of was the Precedent kits for the Huntsman 31, and that was available in two sizes - both over 30 " long that would suite your requirements.

Hi could tell me a store / website that have these models, looking for that one with the cabin In rear. If it is made.
I like the longer length boats, and the cabin cruiser 30inch or more. If anyone has any suggestions I’m looking for my next build, not sure what to get.

I agree with Will (Noah 😂) and think that the Fairey Marine power boats are some of the best looking types on the water.

Some of the mere recent derivatives such as the Solent Spear are also stunningly good looking boats and complement the traditional Fairey Marine designs perfectly.

I also like their choice of deep-vee hull forms and find great pleasure in driving them.

For me, the Huntsman 28 is about the prettiest boat that Fairey built (a wet boat in a chop apparently).
But i can pretty much say, if it's got a Fairey emblem on it, is like it.
The Spearfish is a close 2nd, as is the Huntsman 31 aft cockpit/Sport.
The aft cabin on the H31 has always made it look quite a 'heavy' design in my eyes, like the Super Swordsman too.
Unlike Roycv, I do actually like some of the modern renditions using a 'Fairey style' hull.

Thankfully, we're all different, and have different tastes and likes.

In model size, the Swordsman (and other boats that enjoy a deep-vee hull) drive very well with a single shaft drive.

When I drove a Huntsman with twin shaft drive it did not drive as well and exhibited a strange handling quirk (and was the reason why the owner asked me to drive it).

As the model with two shaft drive turned under power the outside propeller raised out of the water and lost its drive on that side of the boat.

This caused a strange "twisting" type of action as the outer prop dropped in and out of the water snatching and twisting the boat every time the prop bit the water and then threw itself back out again!

The models with single shafts drive better as the central propeller stays in contact with the water for much longer as the hull keels over steeply - just the way we love to see our deep-vee hulls performing!

roycv - yes, you are right, it's only the Huntress that was single prop. Some folks have fitted twin motors in the Huntsman and Swordsman but as the drawings and kits were all single motors most have been built that way.

In some ways I wish I'd made my Swordsman twin prop but it was one of my early builds started and I wanted to keep things simple.

Not sure if I am correct here but when I was building my small version I read that the faireys were twin engine boats.

The cabin at the stern is the most handsome fast boat ever.

These modern ones are dreadful in design and more to the point I have not seen one made into a model kit. So rejected at the model/design level.

Huntsman 31 Aft Cabin - as mentioned above this build started as a Sport, which I think is a lovely looking boat, but finished up as the more usual aft cabin variant.

Swordsman 33 - a kit was originally available for this model and drawings from Philip Connolly both for the aft cabin version with the lower roof level with the deck. I preferred the look of the higher roof version where the roof sits just below the level of the coamings exemplified by the lovely looking full-sized boat called Tireur which was my inspiration.

Huntsman 28 - as well as building to a smaller scale than the Veron kit that was available I modified the design so that the whole superstructure was removable but was still able to maintain the thin coamings.
