About this boat

Here’s my take on a 1:6 scale clinker dinghy with Seagull outboard motor finished.

This is a laser cut kit from The Clyde Model Dockyard and has been modified with 0.5mm mahogany veneer on the seats, thwarts, rudder and transom. Gunwales changed for laminated mahogany strip. Lots of 3D printed accessories for Frank the fisherman.

Seagull runs like a dream on a 450maH 3S battery. Steering is via a 3D printed yoke mounted to a servo in the aft locker.

    neilW:What an absolutely delightful model.

The first thing that stands out is the atmosphere and storytelling built into the boat. This is far more than just a beautifully constructed hull — it feels like a real working dinghy belonging to a real person. The seated figure, the picnic basket, the fishing gear, books, tools, and all the carefully arranged accessories give the model genuine life and personality.

The clinker hull finish and timber work are beautifully executed, and the small outboard installation is especially impressive. I also love the presentation box with the Lapwing graphics — a wonderful finishing touch that shows the same level of care and craftsmanship as the model itself.

What truly impresses me is the balance between scale realism and charm. It captures that peaceful “lazy afternoon on the water” feeling perfectly.

A magnificent piece of modeling and miniature storytelling. Absolutely first class work. ⚓

The boat is called Lapwing and lives in the box, saves it from getting dusty in the workshop and the box stacks on other boat boxes so I get more space.

Here it is in the base part.

We would like to see a short video of the craft in action.

Great job! Nice model and craftsmanship.
