Hi Roy,
I was so affraid that you might have tought that I was putting you down regarding what you had put on line.
I wa worried that it may have offended you and that I would never want to do.
So are you Roy Cornelius Verden?
Some time back I came in on a posting, and I posted a remark on how I had done something on my boats regarding the same problem and I had a couple of from a person so I removed my posting and appologised on the site and said I was coming off of the forum completely for a while. I stayed off for a whole year before I retuned on here.
I have always been so intersted about the Norfol Broads, even at my very old age I got so excited when I heard that MTB 102 was going to be at the Great Yarmouth Festival I couldn't wait to get up there just to see her.
I was vertualy begging them to let me on board to go below as I wanted to see inside and get to see the engine room. But they refused they say sorry our insurance will not cover you to come on board.
I have seen her up there about 3 times and tried each time and get the same answer each time.
I have tried to learn how they were formed, It just interested me. When I was at school I didn't take a lot of notice, I was a lasy pupil and I am honest about it.
the only subjects I liked were woodwork, metalwork and technical drawing. I didn't like much else. So the first two subjects are probably why model boats are what I enjoy doing.
For my 9th birthday I was given the Aerokits RAF Crash Tender.
The following Chistmas all I got was this little box all wrapped up, when I saw it I was so dissapointed when I wa handed it, I think my jaw hit the floor.
My brothers and sisters all had great big boxes. I felt so left out and unloved.
My dad said well aren't you going to open it, I still remeber how ungtateful I felt enev to this day, I feel ashamed.
Anyway when I opened it there was this fantastic brand new ED 3.46cc ED Hunter Diesel engine for my Crash Tender. I was over the moon with it. Then he gave me another small present and it was a tin on Diesel Fuel for the engine.
I was supprised that peat had been dug out for so long, and I had never known it had been used or fuel for heat homes. this is is I never took notice at school and my three subjects were no good without maths or english when I left. All i wanted to do was leave school and earn some money.
I left school when I was a month short of my 15th birthday and went to work as a butcher boy.
Left school Friday and started Saturday, all unoficial, on a months trial to see if I was going to be suitable for them. I stayed there for seven and a half years.
Homework I hardly ever done it and got detentions for that, I didn't read books, I still cannot seem to get into them very easily even now. French lessons couldn't be bothered. If there was a school prize for dtentions and getting the cane well I could have won that hands down.
My father was never very happy with me for that, But I was never out of work. How I miss him now he's gone, it's been a long time but still miss him.
I do wish now I had learnt a lot more and read books.
My first school was a normal (I think ) school then when I was 8 we moved still in the same London suburb (Lewisham) and I was moved to another school.
It was a C of E School, I think this was probably my downfall as I liked my first one and didn't enjoy the move of schools. I ended up being an Alter Boy for several years and then being Confirmed.
But it was at that school that the lessons were never as strict and intest started to drop. Never got homework there like had got previously.
So then when I went to my secondry school I was already a lazy student, the seed had set in.
I never took an eleven plus for some reason, funny thing was though I never played truant.
It was just great to leave school, I said if I have to stay on to 16 I will get myself expelled so my parents got it sorted and as long as I had a job to start I could leave. Within a month I had found 4 jobs I could start when I left.
I decided on the butchers so when the boss told me I could stay thre and learn the job my father said about the other three, I just said I wouldn't bother.
He made me sit and write rhem all a short note telling them I had another job. He said I might need to go back if it didn't work out at the butchers. Seven and a half years.
Even now I try finding things about Norfolk, I always wanted to move there but it's too much of an upheavle I think at my age and I don't think we could afford it now either with the house prices up here.
But the Norfolk Broads still in my blood every year without fail fishing end of every August or begining of September.
Learning more of whatever I could find, When I was able to get my own boat and I used tom trailer it for a long time, a Shetland 535 then I finally got a mooring when I could afford one. I was shocked when I found out that Herbert Woods Boat Yard had actaully built MTBs in the war time.
Anyway sorry if I have gone on and bored you with my life's history, I am pleased that I hadn't offended you in any way.
Kind regards Tom (BOATSHED)

Roy do you keep the sails up when using your motor? Were these sails meant to actually move the boat forward? Conserving fuel?

So then your model seen in your harbour should actually have the main furled, but leave the aft sail set?
When I see on YouTube these models chugging along, some at scale speeds others zipping along, many have their sails up, and it doesn’t look right. In my opinion, if you’re going to put your sails up, then sail your model with the motor turned off!

I watched a black and white documentary on these fishing boats leaving harbour and only a couple of all the vessels seen, showed their aft sail set as they headed to their fishing grounds.
I will look for it and send the link along to you.

I took a bunch of photos off the TV last night. I was looking for fishing gear and vessels that had the aft sail up .
Some photos are black n white and a couple are videos.
Then I went looking for general photography of various vessels of the similar style.
I was also looking at the colour of the hull. None were All White like the Mary Ann.
All on YouTube

I am not challenging your build style of skills. Please excuse me if I have offended you.
Could you tell me how much freeboard these should carry? There should be a difference between empty holds and full of fish.
Did you make your models to reflect it?
I saw this model which is 30 years old.

Post War vessels, Any colour?
Good to know. You are full of information. Are you in your 80’s if so your picture looks much younger🤣.
Peter Duncan had surgery last night;
Hi Ron,
Had my first op. All good. Clear foods tonight and working back to normal tomorrow. Possibly out Friday but waiting on what I will be allowed to eat. It will be different with no roughage.
Looking forward to normal food.
He was hoping for Prawns and Ham at Christmas. Temperature over there is in the 30’s, course you might know that from your son.
Peter also wrote earlier on my Tuesday, his Wednesday; Hi Ron, I think I will be out in a few days subject to the stint doing its job.
There is also a chance i will not need a feeding tube which is good. I was wondering how to eat my prawns and ham at Christmas using that.
My procedure will be late this afternoon and I am now in my beautiful hospital gown. Light purple.
Back to model to be built or sold. I was given ($25) this huge kit Billings Boats Karoline 412 Do you know it?
108cm LOA
33 cm Beam
110 cm Height bottom of Fin to top of mast

John sent me an email asking if he should become a member of the model-boats.com and make his boat available to all of us?
I said that we should ask you.
Ron
The fishing boat looks a simple enough scratch build if you can get hold of some drawings.
My model has two alternative modes of operation selected by a switch on the model - solar only and solar with battery back-up. See circuit diagram. In back-up mode, power from the solar panels goes into the battery when going slow or if stopped. The speed is faster in solar mode (no battery load) but you are stuck if it suddenly turns overcast or if you run under a pier etc.
There are 15 solar panels each rated at 2v 0.25A connected in series-parallel to give 10v at 0.75A. The whole boat is designed for efficiency - long slim hull, large propeller, 300kV brushless motor. Scale is 1:25, size about 854 mm x 152mm and weight about 3.25 kg.
If you can manage to get hold of a copy of the January 2019 edition of Model Boats (UK) I provide a detailed article on its build.
Do you think I should register with the Model Boats website you are on, and post details of the model in response to your query so that they are available to all? I don't usually have the time to maintain a presence on forums etc.
