Recycling vintage boat timber.

Hi JB,
Making something useful from what would be burnt or left to rot is always a good thing.

Imagine if every thing was available for re-use and we all did a lot more of it.
And if things were made to last like back in the day would this world be a better place.?

Recycling vintage boat timber.

Thought this might be of interest. When some of the old Auckland steam ferries were being buried in a reclamation for a carpark in Aug 1981, for the new Westhaven Marina in Auckland (next to the Harbour bridge), I managed to rescue a piece of Kauri timber from one before it was buried. The guys were cutting them up with chainsaws and I asked one of them if he could cut a piece for me. He cut about a 4ft length off one of the top deck 5x5 inch support pillars on a remaining section.

I made quite a few pieces on the wood late I had, which was a lot of fun (a lot of shavings as well) Unfortunately, I sold the lathe when I went overseas to work, but I still have a few bowls etc left, plus a large bollard after 40 yrs. Pics show the location of the ferries and the location the timber came from. Timber is from 1912-1924.
