HMS Amethyst

Gdaynorm.
About two years ago I posted re this.
If you can search and find the film on the Yangste incident it shows the details of lots of the ships upperworks.
I have the film and it has good shots of all aspects.
I did post pictures of the guns.
The real Amethyst was used in the film until they accidentally blew a hole in the engine room rendering it unusable.I appreciate that her upper works may have changed from the real incident to the making of the film.
They then used HMS Magpie to finish the film.
Apologies if you know all this already.
Regards
Bill

HMS Amethyst

😭still have problem, as my model is of the ship as she entered the Yangste. If the structure is for gun crews, there must be guns, so probably more oerlikons. War museum never very cooperative I have found. None of the pics I have found on the net have clarity on that section.

HMS Amethyst

GdayNorm,
Looking at the plans for Amethyst, as fitted 1950, shows large box-like structure, immediately aft of the funnel. It is labeled gun crew shelter. The plans show it on port and starboard. It is rather confusing. This area was modified in 1950. I can scan the plans and send them to you.

HMS Amethyst

Hi Everyone, Have a problem. Have many photos of HMS Amethyst, but not one of them is clear enough to see just what is on the platform aft of the funnel, apart from what i think is a huge locker or small possibly radio shack. I would have expected there to be maybe pompoms and a searchlight, as I cannot see one anywhere else. Ideas very welcome!

HMS Amethyst

Morning Gdaynorm.
There are numerous picture of HMS Amethyst on the net from various sources and easily obtainable.
I am sure you have done your research so forgive me if I am teaching Granny here but the actual HMS Amethyst was used in the making of the film The Yangtze incident which tells the story of that fateful mission when she was set upon in 1949 in China.
During the film the special effect film makers accidentally blew a hole in her side and flooded the engine room. She was then unserviceable and took no further part in the film.
HMS Magpie took over the part of Amethyst (HMS Magpie was commanded by HRH Prince Phillip (but not at the time of the making of the film)
HMS Magpie was a sister ship of the same class and modifications as Amethyst to the best of my knowledge.

The film Yangtze incident is readily available to buy on EBay and other sources and if purchased would give you a real set of pictures to work from if you were able to stop and freeze the film as needed.

I won’t bore you with the technical facts of the ship as I am sure you have already researched her history.
Hope this helps.
Regards Bill
