JB, your not wrong, but if a little encouragement can be offered I have found that youngsters will give it a go.
As I've told those who show interest, if they are happy with what they make then it's a good model. I have models that wouldn't win prizes for looks but they do what they were built for, SAILING.
I used to take a few models to the local canal and let the local kids have a go, most of who now build their own, so I must be doing something right.
Cheers Colin.

Hi Colin, great collection, shame you couldn't demonstrate any on the water. Pity we don't have model displays any more in NZ,- all these displays (and clubs) disappeared years ago. Kids are just not taking it up now, as they almost never see any models to create interest. The odd plane clubs and a few RC car clubs are all that is left, and kids can't afford $150/yr to belong to a plane club such as our local one. Too much money, cost of models, ($500-$1200 for a Billings kit) too many rules and regulations, very few model shops (mine is an 85km round trip) and too many whingers, have spoiled most things for kids here. Even the competition sailing is mostly guys over 40, with the means to pay $2000+ for a one class yacht, what kid can afford that?, - puts them right off.

Ron in the UK we have hundreds of similar events throughout the summer.
This particular one I enjoyed chatting to some tourists from Quebec and Montreal .
They also said events like ours aren't available back home.
As I have a collection of mostly vintage boats I attend as many vintage and steam shows as life let's me.
Cheers Colin.

Fair winds and calm waters,
COLIN.
I wish events like this were in my area of Ontario

Thanks for your comments, I have a sore throat after answering all the enquiries.
One little boy aged 9 showed me a photo of him helping his grandad at Cwmbran boating lake with a lovely model fishing boat.
I was also promised a couple of boats from people that had them but didn't know how to finish building the models left by deceased relatives.
The show organising committee have promised to install a temporary pool for next year's show, and asked me to demonstrate my boats on water, they also asked if any clubs or individuals would join me in my endeavours to generate interest in model boats.
The show is very diverse and interesting for all ages and helps preserve our heritage. I have been displaying at this show for 25 years and will carry on as long as I am able.
Sail on shipmates, happy boating to you all, cheers Colin.

Alice and I enjoyed our visit to the Abergavenny Steam show on Friday , enhanced of course by our visit to your stall. Lovely display of boats and pleased to hear that you had interest from the younger generation. I particularly liked your display of old pond yachts, wish I still had mine from pre WW2.
Cheers, Nerys

When the winds before the rain, soon you may make sail again, but when the rain's before the wind, tops'l sheets and halyards mind

Have just had a hectic weekend at the Abergavenny Steam and Vintage Rally.
Thanks to Nerys for dropping in to chat with me.
Here are the photos of my Saturday display.
Got a few youngsters interested in building and sailing, so hopefully new club members in the making.
A lot of interest in my Sea Commander with the Taycol Supermarine motor.
The show organisers have promised to have a pool next year, so models can be demonstrated on water.
The show will be on Bank Holiday Sunday and Monday next year so if anyone is interested in displaying and demonstrating, then please let me know.
Cheers Colin.
