fireboat vents

Thanks for the offer rookysailor, but I think I can manage alright now, if not I will buy a set, as they always seem to be available on ebay.
Managed to get my vents at Blackpool and a couple of other bits.
There is another question, but think I had better start a fresh thread.

Apologies Sub Lieutenant. However, the Fleet Admiral condoned my actions. 😁

I surely will be more careful in future SIR! 😉

Who is this fellow Veecee that keeps hijacking my thread 😁 😀

HI Veecee
Welcome to the site.
The post is in the Forum Boat Specific Chit Chat and as the original was Fireboat related your comments and input are very welcome. 👍
As you scratch build you would be a welcome contributor to our Boat Build Blog forum. This can be for completed models or new builds. We have many novice builders and any tricks and help you give may encourage others to start building. 😊
You may also post new topics in any of the Forums, just pick an appropriate Title. For instance you could re post your comments in this section under Fireboat Navigation and Searclights. Post some pics Iof you can, they always help me understand new concepts more than verbal descriptions. 😀
Live long and prosper

My apologies to all as I seem to be hijacking this thread away from its original purpose. Being new to this forum, I am yet to learn the navigation routes around here. I would request the moderators to shift my Irrelevant posts (and their responses from other members) elsewhere so that the others are not inconvenienced. After all, the original poster had created this thread specifically for clarifications on cowl vents. it now seems headed elsewhere.

My apologies.

I felt a close up of the search light may be helpful.

Dear Flack, the navigation lights and the searchlight were also built from scratch like every other component of the boat superstructure. The searchlight was crafted out of a 1" dia pipe and has a bright white LED mounted inside. it also has a crude reflector fashioned out of cooking aluminium foil. The nav lights are simple LED's with resistors soldered to the positive arms. Hope this helps.

As I said before, the cowl vents could be rotated in any direction so it doesn't really matter which way you build it.

Cheers!

HI vecee27

Nice model, Impressed with the cowl vents particularly given they are home made. Been looking through my stuff and the direction of facing for the vents is different depending where you look. My 46 inch plans show one way and photo's and other diagrams show another, so I don't suppose it really matters. I like the working navigation lights and searchlight and would be interested to know where they came from.

Cheers Shaun

From the earlier post it may be seen that the finishing is not yet complete. Some white paint has strayed into the red innards of the vents and they need to be touched up.

Just so that you know how these were made. it started off with some cheap bottles of perfume 😯 and some plastic cap ends. The scales seemed satisfactorily accurate........ 😉 Finished them off with solder wire glued at the joints.

Thanks. I have made my boat based on these two photographs. From what I know, these vents could be turned 360 degrees. if that be correct, any which way that the modeller wishes to portray it, is accurate.

Look good to me, I have seen a photo of the original boat with the rear vents facing to the stern, but most modellers seem to face them forward.
It's a mystery 😑

Trying to upload some pictures of my scratchbuilt Fireboat. Would appreciate your comments on the cowl vents.

Vintage models was at Blackpool, I was pleasant and told him the trouble I had with the skins, his response was a shrug of the shoulders. As for the piece I couldn't find a place for. Oh, that's not needed, throw it in the bin. Well you live and learn.

On the plus side, there was a chap there with a fire boat, he was very helpful and answered a lot of my questions. Oh and I got my vents, think that's what started this thread 😁

There has been no problem with gluing and it does go together like a jigsaw, but if you follow the instructions (such as they are) and glue the bulkheads according to the drawing the cabin sides don't fit, the instructions for the cabin are very sketchy, these pieces don't fit very well and I have a piece that I can't find a place for 😁 The skins are a pain in the bottom to fit. But after saying all that I will get over the problems and it will be a good sturdy boat when finished

I have been told that laser cut wood will not glue on the cut edges, you have to really clean them up, dont know if that is correct or not, just makes more work and defeats the object really!

AlanP. Sorry to hear about the 34" Fireboat, looked quite good on the stand, I have an old 1965 one still going strong!! with newly glued everything, I also purchased a set of plans for the Aerokits fireboat, if you send me your email I'll let you have the details.

Yes it was at Haydock that I bought their 34" fire boat, can't say I am very pleased with it and I feel sorry for anyone that has not built a boat before, buying it, I think they might struggle. I will be having a word if they are at Blackpool.
OK rant over, thanks for the reply Rockysailor.

Vintage models do a range of ventilators for the 34" Fireboat
as the also do a kit for the same, they were at the Haydock show, not sure if they are attending Blackpool.

Thanks Shaun, I think SHG will be at the Blackpool show next weekend so I will be able to have a look at them.
Thanks again

Thanks for the response Flack, I didn't really want to buy the full fittings kit as I can make most of the fittings myself, but I have not found a way of making the vents. I am going to the Blackpool show and was hoping someone could put me onto a supplier there for the vents, it's a problem sometimes at these shows to get a good look at stuff for the crowds.

Can't promise you'll have any luck but I have just purchased a 46 inch version from Lesro Models and whilst researching it I noticed they also do a 34.5 inch version which you can buy the fittings set for separately, worth a try. Telephone no 01202 499354

I was wondering If anyone could point me In the right direction to buy the vents for my 34 1/2 Inch fire boat that I am building, I believe there are two sizes, most of the ones I see are solid, I have tried drilling solid ones out before, with little success, I would like the boat to look right when finished 😑
