Work stand

Hi ship mates,

Built a stand from a HK kit from eBay and a wooden Shower tray stand, which I cut down to narrow it.
May attach some screw eyes and rope to make it a portable carrier!

Work stand

The "Work Stand" that I submitted a while back is/was not a true initial construction stand but for one for follow-up work, especially while standing.

Today I finished another "everything" (build, display, transport) stand specific to a boat type, this time for the extended hull Dusseldorf FLB 2 fire boat I am working on. Basically, all of my stands are of the same design (below) but unique for ever different boat with the exception of the "Springer" push-boats, all four being the same dimensions.

The design is like some other model boats in that there are two supports, each one following the forward and aft contours of the hull. Together with the thin rubber padding keeps the boat from sliding or twisting which I find necessary so things stay aligned.

The lumber is regular 1 X (one by...) wood, straight as possible with minimal mars or imperfections. For this application, I had to glue three pieces of wood together to get the right width. Sanding, stain and spar varnish to finish it off. The base is about 1/4 wider one wider than the hull, both sides and ends. This way when I load my boats for transporting to the pond the hulls do not touch each other. Each boat needs a stand anyway, so why not make them to build on.

The flimsy Krick stand (laser cut wood, part of the kit) was off on the aft support so I made a new template to follow the hull's curve closer and it secure the hull much better.

I do the same for my tanks, each having its own stand, but in their case there are tool storage areas between the tracks which elevates the tanks hull to facilitate running the tracks while on the stand.

Work stand

Glad it works for you Neil, mine has been great, although I need to change the base.
The only flat piece of wood I had was some 5mm mdf, but it's not really sturdy/heavy enough, so must get some thick ply.
All the best Andy

Cheers Andy for the work stand idea and it works an absolute treat so much better than my other stand which I’ll now adapt as a transport stand……so nothing lost 😊

Neil

Work stand

Hi Andy

Sorry forgot it was your good self that started the post and so glad you did.
I must admit I spent some wasted time trying to use some of old ply sheets for the base with no joy. So ended up going to good old Wickes and glad I did as it’s was so much easier affixing to a flat base 😂.

Yes strongly agree with you Neil, I also purchased a set on Ebay which weren't expensive and arrived really quickly. Sold (and presumably made by) H.A Kits, mine is XL and is constructed in 6mm ply, laser cut in a sheet plus nuts/bolts. You provide your own base.
Finding it very useful in building my 36'' Police Launch.

Work stand

Well I can honestly say Bassman the stand from eBay is an absolute treat.
I did spend some time trying different configurations, but it works a treat and my boat is nice and level for a change, unlike my home made stand 😂
Thanks again 👍

Work stand

Hi Andy.
If I need a rigid stand to work with, I use 20mm conduit with preformed bends and ‘T’ joints. I cannot find the relevant pictures but maybe this will help.

I cannot promise to finish one project before starting another. I know, I tried.

Work stand

Bassman,

My work stand is a little different. I originally built it for racing sail boats (which I no longer do) but it works for just about all my boats. It is the right height so working on the boat is easy. It can be used at home, outside, and folds flat for transportation and will support up to 100 pounds.

Materials are easy to find. I used 1 X 2 clear lumber, webbing from tie-down straps, and ¼-20 bolts, flat washers, and wing nuts. It is glued with carpenter’s wood glue (waterproof after drying), some wood screws, and finished with spar varnish.

The legs are 36-5/8” long and the width of the outer set in 18” with the inner pair fitting between the outer pair. The webbing is about 18” long across the top plus allowance for going down the out side of the top cross piece (about 20-1/2” total length). The axis bolt is located 23-1/8” from the bottom of the legs to give it a slightly wider spread for some stability. Use a soldering iron or hot nail to melt/pierce the webbing and use two screws per each end.

When you set it up with the webbing taunt, and then sit the boat on the webbing, the weight of the boat will push down so a rounded bilge boat will sit even. Just a little caution: This is not as stable as a table so be careful if people will be around it or if the wind is heavy.

Work stand

Liking the eBay stand and just ordered the large version which should be here next week. Thanks for the post as been looking for a more flexible working stand as the one I made is more of a transport stand.
Thanks Bassman😀

Work stand

I just make mine out of half inch pvc with T's for legs. I also use the foam insulation that fits the pvc pipe. About 10 bucks total. Sorry this is the best pic I have. Keep up the good work! Dave

Hi,

I did find a stand on ebay that looked OK ish.
Price is decent, and I like the adjustability of it. Not sure if it will work for you?

Work stand

I'm getting to the stage of my build when I have to have some better support whilst working on it. Up to now the inverted box has supported the keel and bulkhead work, but I'll have to turn it on its keel soon.
I've tried a forum search, but only found stands for storage/displaying, any ideas for a simple, strong structure would be much appreciated?
