Reg,it would help if you could please give more details, eg weight and construction. Photos would also help.
I would opt for a geared motor as you don't need speed. I have a tug of 49 inches long by10 inches beam that weighs in at 24 kilos and runs really well with a 540 brushed motor with a 25 to 1 reduction gearbox, powered by a 12v 7ah sla battery, giving a runtime of up to 4 hours depending on weather and throttle use.

Here is an advert for Bassett-lowke motors. I have the motor 1453. The lower one looks like your one Colin. The 'Marine' with the curved magnet is the pre-war version. The square magnet Marine motor is the post-war version.

Hi all, now at first glance you might think another Monoperm? But not in this case!

This a very old Hectoperm when they were orange and black.

This is the Dophin about 42 inches long. Kit was from the late 1950's. The owner has the plans if any one wants to see, I could enquire.

Thought it was time I put up a photo. It is me driving a 5 inch gauge steam loco about 5 years ago.

Hi again you can see this boat in my harbour but this is the clockwork motor that drives it. I estimate age at 80+ years the original boat was scratch built.
I saw another example of the clockwork motor in a Kellner commercial boat.
I traced it to an advert that coded it as a K193, so possibly a Kellner motor? Runs for about 6 minutes on 30 winds.

This one is a real mystery no markings and I assume it was meant for model work as it does not look commercial. It is well made but has a field wound magnetic field and so does not reverse.

The brushes are spring pressured carbon. Works nicely on 7.2 volts, not a lot of power unless you increase the pressure on the brushes! The visible screws are there to position brushes.

Here's a bit of a mystery motor. First it is surprisingly powerful. This one came from a batch of 50 sold on ebay by a friend, there are none left, I had the last one!
had 2 motors from him (direct) one came in a box with a very crude picture possiby from India and marketted with a construction set called Mek A Tek. See picture.

However a few weeks ago I saw this very same motor on a commercial toy boat made in UK in 1947. Authenticated details showed this to be true.

On this motor there are bearings put in by myself as the thin aluminium would soon wear through and I have work for it!

The motor on the left was removed from an old Sea Queen my dad built in the late 1950's, but sadly was destroyed a few years ago when a tree fell on my workshop.
I think it's possibly Russian as I can't understand the writing on it.
Although 70 plus years old it still runs quietly and very smoothly on 12 volts.
Possibly going into a tug as it runs quite slowly 2,200 rpm on 12 volts.
The other motor is a Marlin from the 60's and also still a good runner.

The large black motor is what my dad used to run my model Caroline, it was a heater fan motor from a 1954 Wolsley car cost was only 2 shillings from the local scrapyard. And it still runs really smoothly but eats batteries, so changed for an 850 motor.
