HI Alan, the best way I found to varnish the deck was the simple way. Rub down with 240wet and dry ,wash down with , white spirit, making sure that you leave no dust behind.
Dilute then fist coat of varnish(Wilkinson based is quite good) with50% with white spirit and leave to dry(not more than 12hrs. This can be repeated as any number of times as you like to get a rubbing down rub down and apply more varnish until you get the desired effect with 400 grade, Rub down gently, wash off, and apply more varnish. This method can be applied up to using 2000 grade paper, but all that will do will be to waste an awful lot of paper and varnish. Six coats should be enough. Works well on offshore boats as well
ONE point to remember, do NOT mix your varnishes, stick to poluruathane oil, or any oil based paIAINT do not use ronseal one coat !!!!

Don't make the mistake I made, I spent hours planking a deck, then used sanding sealer to get a really nice finish, looked really good, then after a few months it crazed.
If I did it again I think I would use Ronseal
