Hull glassing?

My rule-of-thumb is to glass anything that's thin, punctureable, or has seams ie; planking.

The cloth is in the resin to impart strength, like rebar in cement. Over the hull planking it has a sort-of shrink-wrap effect, holding things together, such as when seams in the planking open up due to the wood's expansion and contraction.
The keel doesn't need this sort of back-up, it basically does that job itself, but it should get well coated in resin. Inside the hull ought to get resin coated as well, even if it doesn't get cloth.

The point is that any water that gets into the wood will be adsorbed making the wood swell, which can pry things apart in extreme cases. It also may not have a way out and will cause rot and mold.

In the attached image, that crack in the seam is in the filler putty under the glass. It's not visible inside the hull, and it's not an issue at all because the glass is intact. The cloth here is 4oz which you can see the weave of in the reflection of the flash, with poly resin. The second pics is just the rest of the boat 😉

Whoever possible, keep the cloth in one piece
(Dry fit first), and myself, I will always cut pieces to fit where needed, particularly around the keel end.
I find folding the cloth makes it more bulky.

Thanks Colin, amazing story, I'll update my wife, she's a sucker for stories like that, especially if they involve 'woofs'.

Hull glassing?

Hi Andy, yes drape and apply the ezekote to form a nice neat cover, blending it down onto the hull bottom. Allow to dry, about 30 minutes before applying the glass cloth to the hull.
The avatar shows my bearded dragon who sadly passed away in February this year. She was about eight years old, but had been dumped in October 2017 as the owner couldn't cope with her needs and left her without water, food or heat and then sold the vivarium on Facebook. Luckily my son bought it and he was told to get rid of the dead creature in it.
His wife found that it was still alive and they took it home, after a good warm and some fresh grubs it perked up. As he already had a large male dragon I asked him if I could have it as I'm a sucker for rescuing sick and unwanted animals. Took her to the vets 2 days later and was told that she would not last the week as she was riddled with worms, was very dehydrated and undernourished. She had eaten some of her toes and half a back leg.
But I don't give up easily and gently nursed her back to health.
My jack Russell took a few weeks to get used to the fact that he couldn't eat her, eventually becoming great pals.
Cheers Colin.

COLIN.

PS My wife just looked over my shoulder (nosey) and wants to know what you have on your shoulder in your avatar!

Thanks for that Colin, think I've got it.
That one piece you cut for the keel and first 1/2'' of hull either side, presumably folds/bends over the bottom edge of the keel?
Sorry if I've misunderstood, but this is my first build!
Thanks again, Andy

Hull glassing?

Good afternoon Andy, when I use the ezicote system for glassing my hulls I cut a strip long enough for the length of the keel, wide enough to cover about 1/2" either side onto the hull. Then working from the keel I do each side of the main hull.
I find this is far easier than trying to cover in one go as wrinkles tend to appear.
I hope this helps you,
cheers Colin.
Fair winds and calm waters,
COLIN.

Quick question; just about to glass the hull (using the Ezi-cote option, not sure if that makes a difference?)
Do I put the cloth on the keel as well? If so (I suspect that you do) do you cut a separate piece or pieces or make a fold/crease in the bottom cloth where the keel joins the hull?🤔
