If it’s to run a thumper motor definitely a 11.1v

I tried a 7.2v battery but it was far too slow

My battery is about 150mm long 48mm wide and 25mm deep (see pic) and it sits sideways in my boat behind my motor

Scoop behind the propeller and the water gets pushed through so no need for a pump, mine has been fine and have run it for 10 years.

I'm with you on that issue Colin. LiPO's are a needless cause of anxiety for me. Prefer SLA, gel-cells for their ballast value...& NIMH when a lighter battery is desired without the hazards of Lipo. I do hav LIPO chargers, & a few LiPOs. Yes a LIPO can provide longer runtime for less battery weight however in our Canadian society obtaining birdshot & other dense weights is problematic. I hav used rolls of old subway tokens (tube tokens), rolls of pennys & nickels, as lead is quite expensive. Have even used a few iron nails embedded in RTV silicone cement. They get heavier as they are rusting. Best 73 de VA3ROD

I have just weighed my 11.1v lipo battery and it weighs 356g and I have weighed a 12V NIMH battery and it weighed 576g so consider the weight when you make your battery choice.

On the flip side, my NIMH batteries are stable and have given me years of use, whereas I am on my second lipo battery as the first blew up like a balloon and had to be scrapped.

Westwood, I have never tried lipo's, I'm old school, nicads, nimh's, and sla is what I've always used. In a small boat like my crash tender I can't use my preferred batteries SLA in 99% of my models.
I'm too old to change now.
Cheers Colin.

Here is my 34 inch aerokits version over 60 years old now, but still works fine.
Cooling water exits via the exhaust tubes in the stern.
The monitors are fixed position but operate very well using an old 6 volt car windscreen washer pump switched by a microswitch operated by servo arm.
The intakes for Cooling and the monitors are just behind the prop.
All run from 7.2v nimh batteries.
Cheers Colin.

So glad I found this site. I picked up what I believe to be an old Aerokits RAF Tender via Facebook Marketplace. I really shouldn't have as there's already a number of projects in the workshop, but I couldn't refuse it. So far progress has consisted of giving it a good looking at, removing the old prop tube (came out very easily), making good a couple of dents in the hull and starting to get the hull primed.

As there's not a huge amount to do to I was thinking about monitors that move and pump water. Just wondering what the best options are for getting working monitors and if those of you who have done this are able to share what works.

Also, if anyone has the plans they would be willing to share I would be very appreciative.

thanks

The water pick up faces forward and is just behind the propeller so the propeller pushes water into the pickup pipe to cool the ESC and the water cooled engine mount.

The other pipe behind this in the photo is the pick up pipe for the water pump that squirts water out of the two fire monitors.

sorry to be a pain the water cooled esc does that use the water scoop under the boat and then put it out the side and does the scoop face forwards or back wards or would you use a non water-cooled one as do they get hot as you can I am not electrically minded but learning fast

My hull is 34.5 inch and the running gear is
Hobbywing 90 amp speed controller, Overlander Thumper T3548/05 60Amp outrunner brushless motor, 11.1 V Lipo battery and 45mm three blade prop is my set up and it runs just about perfect.

I have built two 93 and 94

Both have moving and working monitors.

I run them using an Overlander brushless motor on 11.1v lipo battery with a 45mm three blade propeller and get about an hours run time which is very good considering how fast they are on the lake.

This is great to see some RAF Crash Tender stuff on here again, this is the second in a few days I have seen. This site started of as a Crash tender site and that's why I joined. Don't get me wrong yes it's good to see all sorts of other boating things, but I am one of those who are mainly only into the Vosper styled hulls, MTB's and the like and then fast Power Boats. But I find scale and sailing boring myself🙊
. I accept we are all different and all have other tastes and styles. But the RAF Crash Tender's seem to be way on the back step on here now. I know there will be quite a few comments regarding what I have said and I am not saying that you shouldn't like other likes, and yes I do read lot's of them and do get idea's on ways of building and fitting out things but I am just a speed freak I suppose and also the Aerokit all boats as I have 4 different ones of them and just love the MTB styled hulls.I'll Just say a big sorry now 🙉🙉🙉.

I think that I have a plan for the 34.5 inch crash tender from when I built mine.
If I can find it would that be of any help to you?

Hi,

Welcome to the site. There are several blogs on the site covering the build or refurb of RAF tenders. Go to the ‘blogs’ area and use the search facility to look for ‘crash tender’. Hopefully that will help answer many of your questions.
