G Scale garden railways are modeled to a scale around 1:24. There are heaps of plastic figures available on ebay and similar which could be customized with filler etc. 1:24 is also a dolls house scale. a 6ft person at 1:24 would be equivalent to someone of 5' 6" at 1:22 , quite within the span of normal humans. Hi Stephen,
Re: "Going with 1.32 ..."
Sorry, but if you do that I'm afraid you'll be deeply disappointed that you wasted your money. 1:32 crew will look like pygmies on your model😮
If I'm not mistaken you previously posted that your model (MTB523) is 40" LoA.
MTB 523 was the first of the Type II batch of Vosper 73 foot MTBs with upgraded guns, hence the QF 6 pounder on the foredeck of your model instead of the 20mm Oerlikon (as on the type Is) which was displaced to the after deck , and 2 fish tubes instead of 4 as on Type Is.
73' = 876", divided by 40" = 21.9. So you'd be much better off looking for figures around 1:24. I doubt that you'll find 1:22 commercially available. But talk to the Shapeways guys, they may be able to re-scale to 1:22 for you.
Hoping to help you avoid an expensive mistake,😉
Cheers, Doug 😎
Nice looking model though, looks very well built, deserves an appropriate crew.
PS But if you really-really MUST go 1:32 then how about this chap, going about his business?😁

Young at heart 😉 Slightly older in other places.😊 Cheers Doug

Sorry I'm a little late to the conversation but this file I have found handy determining figure size / scale.

Hope it helps.

As for Shapeways, I get messages about items like the one below where I have Thompson sub-machine guns at 1/20 scale and they need ones at 1/30 scale:

[question] "Any chance of getting you Thompson set in 1:30 scale?"

[my reply] "Thanks for asking. Unfortunately that would be a much smaller product at the 1/20 scale set. At 1/20 scale the design pushes the limit of the capabilities of the best 3D printer Shapeways has. At 1/30 scale a lot of the detail would be lost so it is not possible to have a successful print at that scale."

Shapeways has limits on their processes. One that I use a lot is white versatile plastic. It is a nylon type material, good strength for working models. However, the minimum thickness (and diameters for cylindrical shapes) is about .024 inch. Take the above question, at 1/30 scale that works out to .72 inch for the full sized item. How many features on a full sized Thompson are less than almost 3/4 inch? (Ans: Many.)

Even at 1/20 scale (full size .48 inch) the limit is pushed by making some parts a little thicker.

I see many people advertising their parts with features that just will not print. Just passing on a little "be careful"" comments on Shapeways.

Sometimes one can not rely on the entire model (including plans) are to scale. Several times I came across models where the figures seem to fit well with the model in certain areas yet on other parts of the same model they appear incorrect.

If you can do some comparisons between known dimensions of the model versus the prototype (real) boat and come up the a realistic scale then start measuring some parts (railings, doorways, ladders, etc.). Railings and ladders (including ladders and steps) can be troublesome with some kit manufacturers using railings for example, that are made for other models or general sale, especially machined stanchions.

Lew, re Shapeways. My mate uses them for model rail buildings stuff like that and what I have seen has been quite decent. I know figures are harder to make so I can understand what you say re crew figures. Someone with a resin printer could do it but I got rid of mine, far too messy! Flaxbybuck, re scaling, I generally go by door size..
If it don't fit, use a hammer to make it fit....

If the boat plans or instructions do not give the scale then you will have to try different scale figures on the boat until you find one that looks right.🙄

The problem is a thing of scale issue although the boats' scale the figures are not based on a ships handrail is three feet the o gauge is about right but when you come to the bridge they look small I like people in my boats as they look off without the Mountfield ones are a bit odd to scale

Be careful with Shapeways. Not always top quality. My son ordered some 1/16 scale figures for his LCM, which was much less than top quality.

Also, sellers very often show a "picture " of the product which is usually a digital file print and not a real (finished) product which in some cases details will be incorrect due to the limitations of the printing process.

I’ve also been struggling to find decent crew at various scales, can’t find anything suitable at 1:24 or 1:16 for a couple of my boats, there were sets available 10+ years ago but they are out of production as the people producing them retired or sold up.

Have found a set of 1:32 at Battlecrafts for my RTTL, though I’ll have to adapt them as they are navy crew with beards, not something you’d have seen in the RAF in the 1950s.
