and most of the hull is above the keel, and the waterline of course.
So if your keel is above the hull, especially on sailing yachts, you've got big problems shipmate!

I suppose it depends on the type of boat/ship. On modern steel ships there is no visible keel, it's hidden within the hull plating, so the bottom of the vessel would be the hull. However, it could be said that traditionally built wooden vessels, from clinker built rowing boats to tall ships, where the hull is planked up to the keel, starting/finishing with the garboard strake depending on which way up the vessel is being built. So, in my humble opinion the bottom, or lowest part of the boat would be the keel. If this reads like a load of old tosh, please bear in mind it's way past my bed time...😆😆😆

This poses a fundamental problem for me with my yachts. Have I been calling the keel by the wrong name for the last XX years? I know that if the hull is under the keel we really do have a balance problem. Or perhaps yachts are not boats?

Bit like a trick question in school exams this last one I passed it on to my oppo who is in charge of the build of luxury versions of the modern Huntress at 470,000 they have over 100 on the books.
it made him laugh over the answer he said bet it was a American who set the question as they call the bottom of the boat the Hull we have been doing it a tad longer

I agree too, probably the only exception is perhaps flat bottomed boats?

Would the hull technically then be on the outside and then the lowest part?

It’s not a great set of options having both hull and keel!

Renewing my enthusiasm to get these questions properly validated before going live (I know I’m being slow on this, despite having volunteer members).

StephenT, I totally agree, you build from keel up. So keel must be bottom of boat.

Surely the bottom of the boat is the Keel for what other reason is it there as its below the cladding the Hull is the object that hold the cladding and the keel bit like saying what the sea bed called these question are daft

Hi all, I agree with the confusion. I was out sailing in a Beneteau 40 Oceanis less than 2 weeks ago and the 'correct' answer is in use the whole dam time. I had to look up the last option as I had never heard of that anyway. So upwind down wind on a reach or whatever the mainsail is in use.
Only once in an emergency was a genoa unfurled very quickly I might add to get us out of a difficult situation. The question posed to my son who is a qualified offshore Yachtmaster said it was an odd set of options. And I would trust him with my life in charge of a yacht!

Just a thought on the flush deck question. Having got it wrong (again!) thought I would learn a bit more. Every day is a school day! It seems a chap working for the East India Company as their chief marine architect, Gabriel Snodgrass, in the 1770s picked up the idea from seeing Indian sailing vessels while in Bengal. He then applied it to his designs and the rest, as they say, is history!

Today's question (4th April) also a simple elimination process - when you know what the other 3 guys did (and didn't) 😁

Yes Pilotage does also mean the payment (compensation) for a Pilot Service when entering or exiting difficult anchorages.
The other meaning though has to do with navigation, which of course the local 'Pilots' must master for their area.
BTW: You realise, I trust, that you have let the 'cat out of the bag' for all our members west of the Greenwich date line?? 🙄
But a simple process of elimination should also lead to the correct answer😉
