Question of the Day?

I'm just going to jump in and add my $0.02 worth.

From my perspective, I have made donations at the Bronze (lowest) level, and that allows me to look back at previous days. A "one time" donation does not last forever, mine expires this coming January. If you have made a donation in the past, but cannot "go back", Your donation has probably expired (no medal showing by your info),

I am treasurer for two clubs/organizations. As such I see what it takes ($$) to run a decent website. They aren't free (web hosting fees, storage fees, etc.), and they consume a fair amount of the Webmasters time. While running this site may not be a sole occupation, it should at least be worth the Webmaster's time. I think we all agree that we would miss the site if it went away. We all have (sometimes significant) investments in tools, and boats of our own. I think that a small annual donation to the site won't hurt any of us.

OK, stepping down from my soapbox now.

Roy, to answer your question regarding "going back", simply go up to the date tabs above the Question and click on any past date that is not green. The question will open, and you can answer it.

Also, Roy, I have been a user of ccleaner for at least 15 years. It is a great tool!

Wishing everybody a great day, I am off to my club's annual Swap Meet. Hopefully I will find some treasures 😁.

So far my collection resembles "The Island of Misfit Toys". I've picked up several boats that are old builds and have been neglected. I'm giving them the TLC they need, hoping to bring them back to their former glory. Once I get enough practice/ experience I intend to take on a full build.

Question of the Day?

Hi Doug. As per Alessandro's reply. You can only look back if you subscribe or give a one off donation. I have given one off donations and you can't go back so I think maybe I did not understand the donation aspect or the system is not working. Does anyone know how many people subscribe ? If we all paid the minimum it would be £2.50 x 1,805 = £4,512.50 a month or £54,150.00 a year. I would probably subscribe if it was just £1.00 a month. We pensioners are not made of money 😁

However, the correct one raised some doubts.

Question of the Day?

Dear Doug, thanks so much for the suggestion, but unfortunately it's wrong.
In fact, I'm surprised you didn't know, but only contributing members can go back and answer questions.
Roy can do it, while Simplesailor and I can't.
But I'm glad you're interested.
I can read past comments, but not past questions.
It's a shame, because I answered correctly.
To prove it, I should have taken a screenshot (now it's just my word), but I don't think it would have helped.
Some complaints are listened to, others are ignored.

Question of the Day?

Hi Alessandro, S Sailor and Roy,
Why don't you simply go back to the date(s) you 'apparently' missed and answer the question(s)?
Yes it can be done. How do you suppose that EdW managed to find that missing question for S Sailor?😉
Cheers, Doug😎
PS Roy, I have been using CCleaner since it's inception about 20 years ago.
It was called Crap Cleaner back then😮. At about it's 3rd or 4th incarnation it suddenly became CCleaner. Not so keen on the latest version CCleaner 7 though🤔

Question of the Day?

Hi all, I must have forgotten to do yesterday's QoD! This one today implies that periscopes are used underwater. I hasd to read the question several times to understand the question. Got it right but an oddly phrased one.

Yesterday I was trying to work out why my laptop would freeze up then start up and always seemed there was something going on I did not know about.

A friend suggested I download Ccleaner and run it. Cost £14 but that is less than getting a professional opinion.
Well it took about an hour but so far laptop is running very well, like it used to.

There was so much rubbish there 256Mb of delete data and I also put all programmes not needed to sleep. They come up alright when needed.

I have rung down for full revolutions!

Question of the Day?

Good Morning Gang! A lucky guess as I couldn't completely remember a similar symbol over here. Although my dad explained it to me when I was a kid...maybe I was listening after all.

As for why my build postings have dropped dramatically; a winter sun room for my wife has become my "build." Now that it's weather tight I can hopefully get back down to the shop for my usual nautical work.

I am getting the hang of this AI working - you don't have to worry about the ones you know and get a green mark for - you have to remember what AI says when you get a pink mark and answer accordingly next time (whether AI be right or wrong)

The wave-piercing catamaran hull is the type that the Isle of Mann ferry has.

Hi EdW, I'm in favor of canceling the question and resubmitting a new one if possible.
Alternatively, I'd give all the green boxes, even those who received red boxes.
Further investigation is possible (perhaps including photos of written sources with bibliography), but in the meantime, the question should be contested if there are serious doubts.
In any case, the point of my comment wasn't your knowledge, which I don't question.

Alessandro how I know a bit about hull fouling is that I did research on its prevention for yachts that I crewed on. Due to my electronic engineering background, I assisted with the fitting of ultrasonic prevention systems on a few boats.

Question of the Day?

Todays answer is wrong, the first layer is due to diatom plankton, the second phase is bacterial plankton so the answer should be C as this enables D. AI bases its deductions on facts that are available and in this case it was not given all the facts.

Facts
Microfouling organisms are usually the first fouling agents to attack a submerged surface. Microorganisms are further grouped into two subsets:

Bacteria and diatoms: These are microscopic organisms that colonize a virgin surface and build a biofilm on it. Fouling diatoms are either pen-shaped or cylindrical, hence the names pennate diatoms and centric diatoms.
Algae: They typically attach to the biofilm and exist in three forms: green algae (Chlorophyta), red algae (Rhodophyta), and brown algae (Phaeophyta).

Question of the Day?

Out of curiosity, I translated "belaying pins" correctly because I didn't use a translator but the Amati modeling company website, which has several languages for each product.
Actually, in Italian, they're called "caviglie" (ankles), meaning ankles? That is, the part of the body above the heel.

Question of the Day?

When I searched for the translation of "fife rail" and saw the photo, I understood what it was.
This question was 100% correct; I don't know if it was because it's such an easy question or because people found help online.
I studied the best way to make the "fife rail" and opted for the square C shape. Or, to be more precise, a square with one side missing, obviously seen from above.
I had to figure out and predict how many rigging would need to be attached and plan for the same number of holes for the belaying pins.
I also had to find the right size for the belaying pins based on the scale, something I had no idea about before. Even the distance between the holes can't be taken for granted.
Here are some photos.

Question of the Day?

Hello everyone.
Let's start by saying that I've gotten it wrong in the past. Today I guessed right, but I think the question is poorly phrased.

I don't like the way the question was worded, and I had trouble understanding it even the first time.
I may have simply had problems interpreting the translation, and only the answer options help a little.
In my opinion, it's always important to specify who is upwind (or downwind) versus who. In short, it's a relative, not an absolute, position.

I've made this simple argument:
Whoever is upwind (in sailing, obviously, not in motor sailing) always has a tactical advantage over whoever is maneuvering downwind.
So much so that it's a universal rule to give precedence to whoever is downwind when sailing on a collision course on identical tacks.
In a battle, maneuverability is often the most determining factor.
In theory, I also agree with Luckyduck's reasoning and consideration. This option, however, isn't considered among the four possible ones.
I don't think A, B, and C are correct, they are all highly incorrect in my opinion, including B.
