Hello Roy, Congratulations on your wedding anniversary.🤞😊
Haven't you noticed that "she that must be obeyed " has a copy of the colregs manual on her bedside table 😀. Is it there to study or to hit you over the head with ? 🤔😕. Or probably just to make sure that you don't go astray 😁😂🤣..

My wife tells me I am inderway. aground, no anchor and no engine!
I probably am as well we just nearly celebrated our 62nd. wedding anniversary a few days ago.
Conversation is now a look and a grunt, well its my hearing aids you see, and that passes for communication as there is not much more to be said after that length of time.
I hope she does'nt read this as my life will be hell for the next 10 years, by the way I did not mention that I am planning to live for ever! It is all these kits yet to build.

Hello everyone.
No, the question was similar but not the same. Absolutely not.
The old one was very controversial, and RossM and I had discussed very specific aspects.
The previous one (read it if you don't remember it well, and if you can) was more difficult and had another answer that could be considered valid.
In short, it left a lot of doubt.
Today's question, however, leaves no room for doubt.
Even those who have never read the Colreg can easily guess why the other three are completely wrong.
For me, once the translation difficulties were overcome, everything was clear; for you, it must have been child's play.
Pat wasn't there yet, but I would have liked to read his qualified opinion on the matter.
It seems to me that (aside from a few repetitions), the last error dates back to the question about the English nautical chart (RT).

I agree Pat most want to know what they are building, more obviously from plans but when you check up on kits it is surprising what has been left off the prototype for commercial reasons.
Witness the off market 'super detailing' accessories, i.e. putting back what has been left off.
Some of the worst cases are stanchions / hand rails. When done cheaply they are grossly out of scale and the knobs the size of scaled down cabages!
This particular question about the 'clew', well that is what it is called on models as well. If you are making / restoring yachts then you need to know if you are 'putting all the string back'. When looked at carefully every rope has a purpose.
I was watching a TV prog. called 'Repair Shop' A guy was restoring a commercial Star class yacht. He had no idea what he was doing. The bowsies normally there to allow the sails in and out, were used to haul the sails up and down with the sails held straight fore and aft.
As far as old kits go the wood can let you down, mahogany (often afromosia) is worst as it dries out and splinters. Balsa can dry out on the surface as can obechi / bass wood. Sanding the old surface off is usually OK. Early plastic is best avoided as UV light deteriorates the plastic.
But, contrary to that I have a very old 575 yacht and the hull is as good as new so just be careful.
Plura plastic is very stable, the Bugsier 3 (Graupner) tug boat kit came out in 1974 and was still being produced 40 years later. That was an early use of Plura. Hulls formed from Plura need a good paint job and keep out of direct sun light. I think it is a commercial name but very like ABS plastic, and it bonds well and also sticks with Stablit Express.

Nice to know I have some influence somewhere - seriously my kind of question more than merchant shipping regulations or dinghy racing rules.
Before the purist moan it has nothing to do with model boat building - how can you build a model that is lifelike if you don't have these parts and know what they are called also what they do - just my opinion YMMV

I seem to remember a question about areas in the UK shipping forecast.
This may prove useful if one came up in the future

Ok Roy, we have had a hosepipe ban for quite a while now here in Yorkshire. I was going to use our fish pond as a test tank but that is a little below ground level and my knees are now giving me a bit of trouble as well☹️.
I can remember seeing the fishing trawlers up at Bridlington and Scarborough in the 1970,s with the large flat boards on their sides and wondered what they were about 🤔. I wish that I had photographed them then as it would have been useful now that I,m into boat modelling.
I think that they have gone now 🤔 and have been replaced by smaller boats fishing for shell fish, crabs and lobsters ??

Having sent my last post I went on-line found exactly what I want and my new floation tank arrives on Tuesday!
Obvious place is outside the workshop under cover on a Dexion base support.

I have fitted otter boards to my 2 fishing boat models. Had to bring one back to the work bench as a plank or two has sprung and repairs and painting are on-going.
With our local water company trying to get us to be more conservative with our use of water I have been using the bath for testing.
I think I should find a small paddling pool and have it outside ready to use. Anybody else got thoughts on it? I am a bit dodgy on my knees and would prefer it to be waist height.
I usually build models max at 30 inches, 760mms. I am looking out for an artificial Christmas tree box, seem a bit rare at the moment.

How true - not free but Duty Free - you used to be issued with stamps to claim them - used to keep the Reggie’s busy chasing the people that abused the system

Take today’s question - I think it’s a valid question for all mariners - however for those purists that think this board is only about model boats ask the question is this relevant ? But do I hear people moaning about the questions asked in this section of the board?
Let me put it in another form - if you are building a model of say the Titanic is it not reasonable that people will expect you to know all about the real Titanic and its history another example is if building a model of the Matthew is it not reasonable
for the builder to know about the voyages of John Cabot or could it be that people are only making models of the likes of little fishing boats and little unfamous boats - there is nothing wrong in that but they should not moan when people partake in a project that does have historical significance.
Just my thoughts and two Penneth.

Why would anyone visit a Model Boats web site / forum to demand to talk only about model railways or aircraft. Those groups already exist.
Our label is Model Boats and a few spin off subjects.
I am happy with the group the way it is. A great pity there is desention but those posts do not create the narrative. Likes are the measurement of agreement and a good idea as well.
The idea we are all trying to be Admirals is an inevitability as eventually enough posts does the counting job. I never did like senior management anyway.
Regards
Roy

Hi Doug, the idea is to create separate forum sections with topics that deviate from the main theme.
It's my idea, but many ship modeling forums (almost all the ones I know of) offer sections for other modeling and general topics.
Many are even more complex, and some are already complete from the start, designed as general model kits (ships, planes, toy soldiers, tanks, trains, etc., with further subdivisions).
In any case, we can have our say, but it all depends on Fireboat. If they want and have the time to do so.
I (to be honest) don't have any particular needs; I like this site, and it's fine as it is.
Mine was just an idea to reconcile the needs of those who don't like digressions with those who like to branch out into other fields, to avoid conflict.

Would I like to start over? No! I do not want to know what is going to happen next.
I think the experience I did have, on balance, was good.
My only annoyance was not listening to my mum when she wanted me to take piano lessons she got me off to a good start, but I did not follow up. I wish I could play the piano but too late now.

Don't know about clean living Pat.
Spent 40 years zotting around the world climbing and crawling around alls sorts of ship and subs.
Evenings and weekends 'cigareets and whisky (rum in S America or Caipirinha, Pisco, Tequila in Brazil, Chile, Mexico respectively) and wild wild women was the motto.😁
Cheers, Doug😎

Alessandro,
Re "This way, those interested only in boats can visit only what interests them and ignore what doesn't. "
They can do that now, if only people would take note of the Categories (not Sections).
"the "Non-hobby chat" section is still within the forum. So the topics still overlap.
I meant a section outside the boat modeling forum. In other words, two different forum sections (on the same level as the builds and harbors)."
Outside the boat modelling forum means a totally different site to be created and maintained.
We don't need two more categories like Blogs and Harbour, they would still be within 'The Forum'. And as Nick rightly points out we already have a Non Hobby Chat category.
But like any human conversation you can never prevent a Thread within a category from meandering off topic. It's human nature.😉This discussion being a prime example.
Cheers, Doug😎

I've led a tough life, 50 years in the building game and 40 years of humping band gear and giant pa systems about in the evenings. Takes it's toll on the bones!

In answer to Lucky duck, apart from model boat building, including steam boats, I make model boilers and steam engines, I fiddle about with 3D printers, laser cutters and cnc router, I'm by no means an expert but I carry on regardless. I also have a shed full of full size wood working machinery, rarely used these days due to the various afflictions bought on by old age..

Hi Luckyduck, as a kid, I did static model aircraft. I built 1/72 scale plastic planes.
I've always enjoyed watching model railroads, but I've never actually done it.
It takes up too much space.
A friend of mine made a model railroad with his son, and it took up half his room.
I think you can post photos of your hobby, but these days, I fear you'll attract a lot of criticism. You'd certainly attract the ire of those who say they should leave the forum, only to stay and make a ridiculous of themselves.
There are those who think they can dictate new rules and act as censors without actually owning the forum.
The only person who can apply restrictions is Fireboat.
To please everyone, I have a suggestion for the administrator.
He could create two more sections (which can be deactivated at the user's discretion), one for other types of modeling and another off-topic section for everything that isn't modeling.

Well, took a stab at it and dropped the ball on this one. BTW: I have started to build "My Harbor" with pix. Details on kits to follow when time allows.
I've forgotten many of the old details on my kits so I'll have to take notes.

Rockbag,
22 correct and 8 wrong in the last 30 days.
In 3 days time it will change to 23 and 7,
The following day it will change to 24 and 6 that is assuming that you get the answers correct.
I will stay like that till the next red line drops off the scale below your name.
This has nothing to do with AI it is straight forward maths

Hopefully this site is for like minded people, with a core interest in model boats, but other wider interests which possibly feed into model making. It would be interesting to see how many of us do other types of modelling that both feed into and feed out to our other modelling interests. Fo me, my core interest is model boats, but I also model railways in both OO guage and N gauge.

Good morning guys.
As for me, this time I had no doubts; the right answer came to me immediately.
I didn't waste any time; I was lucky.
During my build, I had to address the problem of the winch.
I had to figure out how to make it, where to place it, how many to make, and take care of many other details to make the ship model consistent with its era.
So I researched extensively, asked many people, and obtained a wealth of information and images. In the end, I gained a little knowledge on the subject.

Recently I have been luck with easy questions on QoD, easy questions are the ones you know the answer to.
I know this is going to change and the only way is down 👎

I agree working out an on-going quiz is difficult and using the A.I. was a great idea. I assume A.I. has only stored data to refer to and we all know that data often has to be verified to be acceptable. But much gets through without a guarantee of being correct, I suspect A.I. is unaware of this.
I do wonder though if A.I. is aware of itself? And there is more than one system out there, or should I say in there?

I've given up trying to work out the leaderboard. I just enjoy the quiz for what it is. I think without Ai we wouldn't really have a quiz, I defy anyone to come up with 365 questions and 1460 multiple choice answers on model boating without repeats. At the end of the day, it's a bit of fun...
