Shucks, I narrowed it down to two.

Question of the Day?

Well I got that wrong. It's a long time since I did any dingy sailing but I thought I knew the answer. I always followed the wind shift. Maybe it is different in a larger boat. No idea. 😂🤣⛵👎

Question of the Day?

I have come on here today and it has told me that I have all ready answered the question. This is all wrong. I DONT KNOW WHY THIS DOES THIS. This isn't the first time this has happened to me. Some ting should be done about this happening. I know it happens to others.

Question of the Day?

Not just yacht racing - it is even more important in dinghy racing, when wind shifts have more effect than tides. In offshore yacht racing this tactic has to be considered with other factors such as tides, which often have a greater effect.

Question of the Day?

Steve, “Fighting lights” were two coloured lights, one above the other, suspended from a cross tree on the mast.
These provided a code to identify as friendly. The code changed every four hours.

Question of the Day?

I would agree with that - even for professional sea farers or officers of a Sail Training Ship

Question of the Day?

You're right, Steve. We Teredo Navalis modelers don't care, unless you leave your model in the sea for days on end.
Very unlikely for us, hahaha.

No, that's fine; the forum should be a place for fun and learning, in my opinion.

However, I've seen scale ship models (static display models) covered in copper plates because they wanted to faithfully reproduce the original.

Question of the Day?

Ok; Alessandro, I will certainly remember the bad old Teredo Navalis the next time that I build a model boat with marine birch plywood.😀
But I will not be covering it with copper sheeting.😊
I think that I should be quite safe as I only sail my boats in a landlocked lake 😐☺.
Do you think that I should be taking the forum much more seriously???🤔. I have learned a lot since joining when I asked if anyone could help with the use of the operation of "fighting lights" on my HDML.

Question of the Day?

The "Teredo Navalis" is more infamous than famous.
In Italy, it's simply called "Teredine."
It's been well known since ancient times.
As Luckyduck rightly said, it was a major problem for wooden-hulled ships.
I love bivalve mollusks (especially because they're delicious to eat, like cephalopod mollusks), but Teredo Navalis have always disgusted and repelled me.

You're right, Steve, it's true, I had an advantage because the scientific name is closer to Italian than English.
However (being a fan of animals and taxonomy), I always identify animals by their scientific name.
It's represented by the binomial Linmeus (father of taxonomy).
The scientific name is valid and unique everywhere in the world. You can't go wrong if you use it.
If I see a blue shark (verdesca) I will say "Prionace Glauca" to make sure there are no misunderstandings.

Question of the Day?

Hi Pat.

Don't leave the Model Boats Forum. There are only about 2% of the 1,858 members doing the QOD on a regular basis, so it's not an important part of the Forum.

Question of the Day?

My sentiments exactly - to me the enjyable part of the board was learning things you did not know but I dont think some people take it seriously(they are only interested in seeing their name at the top of the ladder) - some openly admit why remember things - will be interesting to see how they get on when we have a massive cyber attack or a massive EMP pulse

Question of the Day?

Oh Pat! I have 4 wrong answers and one was a 'you have already answered the question' NOT. So I am banging around in the 80s.

I think that although it would be easy to cheat, why bother? I went for Teredo but thought it was a worm apparently it is a clam! So learned something there.

I was in IT and came across some very clever and widely read people. As one guy described himself "A mine of useless information" I know some must take it as a challenge as from a previous post to 'fix it', when there was a' you have already answered the question' response.

Out of boredom and not ready for bed I was listening to some 'revenge / hard done by stories on you tube. They are put together by A.I. and so riddled with errors, assumptions, lack of continuity and stupid situations that maybe the future is bright for us humans after all.

I work on the assumption that between us we know everything! It's like if asked about our son and myself. I say I taught him everything he knows, but not everything I know.

Don't give up Pat! Just a bit of fun.

Question of the Day?

WOW I only knew that one from the 30 years of owning a boat.
Luckily I only had a fibre glass one.
I has a plaque on my Shetland 535 that said,
"If boat where meant to be built from fibreglass then GOD would have made trees from fibreglass".
I cannot BELIEVE that I have finally got up to 100%.
I will drop soon I know it.

Question of the Day?

The toredo worm was the reason that so many wooden hullsed ships had copper plates added below the water line, added to the weight of the ship, but extended its life enormously. A toredo worm infestation could cripple a wooden ship within a year of being in the water.

As I am high on the leader board, I am obviously cheating.🤔

Question of the Day?

Well I managed to guess this one correctly today. Only because of my IT back ground. I had come across the word Teredo as used in the phrase "Teredo tunnelling" so putting two and two together with Navalis which looks like Navy I guessed correctly.

Question of the Day?

What is becoming more and more obvious to me this is not a test of people’s knowledge but a test of who cheats

With that in mind I have cancelled my subscription and will be closing my account at the end of the month

While I enjoyed the challenge of the question of the day - what is the point of the board ladder if all competitors do not follow the same rules, if you cheat it’s not about your nautical knowledge it about your ability to surf the net

Good luck to all those who continue

Question of the Day?

It is statistically proven that anyone has a 70% chance of passing an exam with multiple choice questions without any knowledge of the subject

There I see giving multiple choice is not a fair way of accessing someone’s knowledge

With this in mind I have cancelled my subscription and will be closing my account at the end of the month

Good luck to all those that continue

Question of the Day?

Ho bug**r, I see what you mean now with navalis, Doug,
😮 I should have gone for that but the only latin names I have come across have always had the same name twice as in Vulpes vulpes for fox and Meles meles for badger so I just went for the one with two names😆😆..
I couldn,t remember that question so it must have been before I got involved with this ☹️😭😭.

Question of the Day?

I agree with you all the way.😁
Not like Pat's questions when he asks 4 or 5 parts to one question with no possible answers given 🤔🤔🤔, it's the steady elimination of these that makes it a little bit easier to answer . Far Far Far tooooo hard for me to have a go at Pat's , I would embarrass my self 😣🤤😢.

Question of the Day?

Good luck with your search Steve - we have very few retail shops left that actually sell anything where I live - most have been converted to street bars, nail bars and hair dressers.

Markets and car boot sales would be the best chance of finding anything like that around our way - and a certain amount of luck!

Happy hunting!

Question of the Day?

I don't know, there doing sailing ship questions again??
I know nothing about sailing or sailing ships.
I sat and read the question half a dozen times and was bewildered at first.
But seeing as the answer's the only one that had fore in it, well thatt was the one for me.
So I went for that one.
So to me the answer was in the question if you read it enough times and think 🤔about the four answers listed logically.

Question of the Day?

Hi Steve s, If you want to see how they were used and in a good film then watch Spencer Tracy in "Captains Courageous" 1937 he got Best actor award. You can see the whole Grand Banks fishing fleet. I hope it is a National archive as I have never ever seen that many fishing boats and dorys at sea.

The start is a bit boring as it sets up the spoilt little rich boy in school and on a cruise, but get by that and you are in for a treat. There is a very nice model as well!

Question of the Day?

This one took some reading multiple times 🙄🙄, but the part of the question "the unique construction feature of a 'Banks dory' that made it especially suitable for deployment from schooners"
Lead me to go for the answer with the part that had-
"easy stacking and launching from mother ships" in its answer..😊
As somebody has pointed out more than once-
"The Answer is in the Question" 👍I had no idea at all about the description of a Banks Dory only that it was a smallish boat probably with a few sets of oars ?? 🤔🤔.

Nick. I totally agree with you when you posted
"The post question debate is as much fun as the questions themselves!" That's how I got involved in the first place 😉😁.

Question of the Day?

I'm about 50 minutes late answering the question of the day and I get an email telling me I need to answer the question.I don't want members reminding me about answering it. I like doing the question and getting points, but please stop telling me to answer it. Or I will have to go to my Profile page and fill in the box that stops emails. P.S. I enjoy most of the mail, but not the one that orders me to do the question. Thank you. Have a great evening, as you all know, Canadians need to do the question at 8 PM. I know that I now will be overwhelmed with them tomorrow .

I nearly missed out on this NEW question of the day as I was just looking for any comments on the foghorn one. Then I found a question of the day that I hadn't answered and began to wonder about my sanity 😣🤔.
It was only when I read more comments about the question being changed that I breathed a sigh of relief, wow, thank goodness for that 😀😀😀. I really thought I must be losing my sanity having skipped a whole day- I'll now finish my ranting with a very long sigh of relief.....
