The idea is to produce a wave pattern 180 degrees out of phase with the ship's natural wave pattern, thus reducing induced or form drag created by the hull shape and speed of the ship.
I remember a tourist trip around Hamburg Harbour in a 35 foot boat and that had a bulbous bow and I wondered how effective it was.

The bulbous bow is very well known.
Who hasn't noticed this protuberance on recent warships, cruise ships, tankers, etc. etc.?
The bulbous bow reminded me of a class of ships of the Italian Navy, the Thaon di Revel class of patrol boats.
As patrol boats they are quite atypical, first of all the displacement of 6000 tons (of the full version) is more suited to a fighter (Destroyer) or a frigate than to an offshore patrol boat.
The same goes for the armament and the hangar of the large helicopter (SH-90 or EH-101).
This has generated some perplexity in the homeland about its role, since it integrates rooms and systems for rescue and rescue in the open sea.
However these are not the peculiarities of these ships but rather the original shape of the bow.
In this case we cannot speak of a classic bulb but of a real rostrum. If you see it out of the water it looks like a double overlapping bow.
I (from an aesthetic point of view) do not like it but I believe it has its effectiveness in navigation.
However, this solution is not present in the fighters in the design phase, which return to the classic bulb solution.

Watch out. Allasandro and Rubadub, I am gunning for your spots!😂😂😂

Try reading past messages to realize it (if you have the will and patience and time).

naval history, war and non-war events, even myths and legends, travels and explorations, architecture and construction techniques of ships, civil and military naval classifications, international regulations and conventions, naval sports competitions, parades and naval events, cartography, meteorology, marine animal species, naval cinematography and also nautical knots, as well as naval modeling.
This is just my taste.

Re "my own score cannot improve for 6 days now"
Actually you 'only' need 5 right answers to improve your score by 3%.
Be happy😊 I need 20🤔
Cheers, Doug😎

Let's hear some more comments please. Experience from work i.e. the kind they pay you for was that decisions are best taken at the lowest possible level.

I think the challenge with making it modelling specific, is there are often no right answers there. Build methods and techniques vary and are subjective. I think historical and famous boats/ships people can relate to though, so we could focus it a little more in that direction?

I take the point, but for me just saying I am not doing that anymore without suggesting alternatives is a negative view. I agree there have been questions of rules and practices at sea we are not involved in or as has been said, need to know.
The QoD has provided the largest number of posts and the list of followers is quite long, so QoD is onto something. Just needs developing, but do you want specific questions like. What is a gantz iron and what does it do?.
It does need refining, the real point is that we have enjoyed it in general, how would we like it to continue? These are contributions that I am sure Fireboat would like to hear. So lets hear a few ideas from forum members.
Roy

I agree entirely with your comment

Lets hope that if our now more evident, 'enemies' use AI there will be a similar failure to deceive in its intentions.
With the current invasion of Ukraine, the Russians have found out that the design of their latest tanks with explosive armour which were expected to be game changers had one small problem, as can be observed on early news film of broken tanks by the roadside.
It sounds like the accountants said they could cut costs by not actually installing it (explosive armour) as "Who was ever going to use it"? Just tell everybody how dangerous and foolish it would be to attack the tank!
Fireboat, we do appreciate you running the QoD and please carry on. It is clearly the biggest talking point on the forum and lots of fun. Please carry on the good work.
Regards to all,
Roy
Question of the Day?
I was confused with all the names and once again I didn't know what different types of Bouys mean what.
My boating days where 99.5 percent on the Norfolk Broads.
I did mess about around the Isle of Sheppy for a short while on a speed boat I owned and then took it for a mad ride up the Thames up to Tower Bridge turned around next to HMS Belfast.
That was a fritening ride to say the least, the bad things we met coming down the Thames in the way of rubbish , Logs that you could barely see, never again, the Swale was more fun.
But that was only for a short time.
The Norfolk Broads was my favorite and had been since I was 15, way back in 1965.
Didn't see bouy's on there though.

I spent the majority of my career repairing and later managing the repair of mainframe computers. So my experience with computers is that nearly all the ones I saw were broken!
Take the simple case of an error light. If it comes on is it controlled by part of the system? Or does it come on because it was switched on by a failure. So if we get a false error light then an operator may start to wonder if a genuine error light is real or not.
In the early days computer peripherals had frequent false error lights, a technician may just happily do a reset and say he has seen it before.

Actually AI is at the moment not 100% reliable. Many users outside of our own small world are concerned as to its accuracy and also reliability in some situations.
A recent BBC program broadcast 2 days ago under the name Tech Now (taken over from Click) has reporters of industry and a head of a Tech company in discussion. They say that it is an emerging tool but can get things wrong, but replacing the research that graduate leavers may join companies to learn more skills to train and get experience.
Casual enquiry can produce data on many subjects. We all know that you can create a 'story' in a few seconds with some suggested subject matter. The results can be bizzare, with much repetitious description and repeated detail. Try the stories seemingly about well known figures on the web site Quora, you feel you just want to hear progress without the unecessary descriptive detail.
Like all these emerging techniques some good may come from it, our son swears by it, as he thinks it will take over the world. He was very much a leading light in parallel processing with computers 25 years ago, but this is now by-passed with new instruction sets and faster processing.
AI will have rather a lot of unexpected problems, the current one being the lack of employment now hitting graduates. Companies who might have employed 20 graduates have cut that by half and want to wait and see. New tools require new operators and AI does look like a good possibility but just for the s/w side of life.
I see the resurgence of 'blue collar' jobs someone has to build houses install the lighting and plumbing and even fixing the very computers and peripherals that AI will rely on. The employment balance may change but beware anything the Governments recommend they so often end up with unexpected consequences largely driven by cost cutting accountants.
A few years back we had mad cow desease spread mainly because abatoirs were reduced and centalised. The UK government wanted us all to buy diesel driven cars, it goes on and on.
So for me AI is a new development and a long term possibility and I want to see it perform! So far I give it just 6 out of 10.

However, know that these topics have been widely debated over time.
AI has created incorrect answers, repetitions and inconsistencies over time.
Many are extremely critical of AI (the leader of the negative comments on AI is RoyCV but he is certainly not the only one).
I have not yet developed a definitive opinion on AI, but for the moment my position is very doubtful and very little in favor (of course I could change my mind over time, perhaps).
I see many kids using it in their daily studies and it makes it easier. But is the easy way the best?
Will having the easy way improve learning?
I'm not sure.
However, AI is the future and Fireboat has greatly improved the "Question of the Day".
It is now much more precise, the errors are few and the counting system is good.
We must congratulate him for the improvements he has made.
Furthermore, in the event of a clear error, human intelligence intervenes (Fireboat on input from multiple members who protest).
This recently introduced system allows you to eliminate the wrong question and ask a new one (always under the sole control and supervision of Fireboat).
Consider that improving your score and making a good impression is of interest to many (even those who do not admit it or say otherwise).
I am sure you will have fun and I am happy that you signed up.

Repeats are slightly less common now and the accuracy seems to be much better than it was.
Sign of the times definitely! As an IT developer in my day job too, it’s amazing to see what AI can do now verses just 2 years ago. Not sure all is good! But we have to keep our fingers crossed!

Just joined - there are some quite challenging questions there - especially at the various regulation question and some of the history question but enjoyed scratching my head on some - will try the rest when I get time

Question of the Day?
That was one I can remember, it was in the back of my head from something that I watched on TV.
I thought I had posted yesereday's post I had written, but when I came on here
I hadn't gone to the bottom and pressed post reply.
I was in a hurry to go out.
Then get back home to start to get the motorhome ready to go away tomorrow.
I am off to meet my last remaining original member of my long followed rock band tonight.
Status Quo. Followed them since 1966 before they became Quo, seen them countless times in concert.
But tonight I meet Francis Rossi in person.
I am 75 in 2 months and I have been a fan since I was almost 16.
It's mad but at my age I am nervous and excited all at the same time. Most of you will hate Status Quo but each to thier own, but thats my favourite rock band, I have followed other acts but my other dream would be to meet Cher. That will never happen.
Can't wait for tonight, bye for today.😀😀
Question of the Day?
I sat and read the question must have been 6 times.
I do't know any of this SOLAS stuff.
