Question of the Day?

Still a bit confused with the scoring. I am not that bothered about it. But, I had been at 97% for ages and I got yesterdays wrong, so it dropped to 93%. Today I log in and I am at 90% and get the answer correct which took me to 93%. I haven't had my morning cuppa yet so my head is a bit fuzzy, but, shouldn't it have started at 93% and taken me back to 97% ?😂😂

Another none of the above, Vega did not complete west to east. The first ship to do this is recorded as Gjoa.

Question of the Day?

Hi Dave, you're right.
I pointed this out before but also said it doesn't matter because Stephen is working on it and is (wisely) tackling the problems one at a time.
Considering that it is a game anyway, I am very happy that Italy's score is at the maximum and mine at the minimum and not vice versa.

Let's then consider another aspect: I am participating alone for Italy.
If another Italian who makes a lot of mistakes participated, the national percentage would be lowered.
I mean that many English, Americans, Canadians and Australians individually have a 100% percentage, yet they never see their nation at 100% (to their regret I think).

Stephen (Fireboat) will also solve this anomaly, but if he doesn't, it's not that serious or urgent.

Aleessandro,
It's interesting that you are the sole person carrying Italy which is at 100%, and you personally don't even show in the top 20 members. Must be that new math??
Anyway, congratulations on carrying your country to #1 !!

Question of the Day?

I have to agree with this comment. I never understood how not answering a question did not count against your score. If I knew this in high school I would have been a straight "A" student. Not the average Joe I truly am.
Scrap the overall, and have an all-time average based on number of correct answers to total number of questions.

Just my 2cents worth.

Question of the Day?

Hi Stephen,
I had an uneasy feeling that this would happen🤔
As with any 'all time percentage or average' the All Time Score is subject to the law of diminishing return.
With each additional question the effect of one question diminishes very slightly.
Examples:
Today 06.02.25.
Number of questions since 01.12.23:- 3136537=433.
Effect of answering today's question: 1/433=> 0.23094688%
Tomorrow: 434 questions 1/434=> 0.230414746%
As can be seen the diminishing effect is only from the 4th decimal place.
The more questions the smaller the effect will become.
Given the rounding function of zero decimal places in the published results it will take ages for any change in the published result to be noticeable. If at all as the effect of each new question is tending to ZERO.
Conclusion: Scrap the All Time. Half of us may have passed on to 'The Great Workshop in the sky' before any change is noticeable.

As for "It’s a minefield in itself getting a sensible stat everyone likes "
Remember-
'You can't please all of the people all of the time. Be happy if you can please some of the people some of the time!'😉
Also: 'Never trust any statistic that you haven't falsified yourself.'
Or: 'There are lies, damn lies and ... statistics!'.

BTW re "What I have done with the members one, is look at the last 30 days, regardless of whether you answer a question or not."
I don't think that that is fair. For instance; I don't answer sailing ship/boat questions where I know that I'm way out of my comfort zone. And I don't want to cheat by Googling.
If the Leader Board showed the true %age of correct answers to questions actually answered it would look very different! And better reflect the participants knowledge.

Just a few arithmetical thunks😉
Cheers, Doug😎

Question of the Day?

Hiya, for my 'two pennith' I like the new system and it is interesting to see by hovering over a country how many have played in each country - UK being the biggest - I think! Also hovering over your score shows how many you have played and how many are correct. This feature may have been there before but I have only just found it!! I look forward to playing it each day - even with the few inaccuracies.
Stephen you are doing a grand job! 😊

Question of the Day?

With the all time percentages it would take a great deal of correct answers to move the needle.

What I have done with the members one, is look at the last 30 days, regardless of whether you answer a question or not. So after midnight, everyone’s percentage will drop by about 3% (100/30 days) until they answer the current days question, leaderboard wise, as everyone drops at the same time, nobody moves higher or lower in relation to one another.

I could match the same logic for the countries, probably would be sensible. Maybe also sensible to remove the big all-time average number too and we stick with just the last 30 days?

It’s a minefield in itself getting a sensible stat everyone likes 😂

Question of the Day?

It's pretty easy to get at least one correct, when the exact same question is asked 2 days back to back, LOL
Since the answer was painfully obvious, I got it right BOTH times!!
Interesting that even before answering correctly, my score dropped 7 points. Answering correct twice did nothing to raise it.

EDIT: I just realized that the 30 day score and the running total score are both shown. I actually went UP to 100% for 30 day. I wonder how long that will last .....

Hi Stephen, thanks for your effort.
I'm telling you that there are still problems.
I haven't made a mistake in months so I should have 100%, but no.
After answering the last question correctly I went from 24 to 13%.

Hi Stephen.
It will be very interesting to see how these changes go. Thanks for taking the time to try something different.
On another note, I know that we here in Hungary are quite a small country in Central Europe but I am reasonably confident that there has not been a revolution or been taken over by another state recently. Please can we be put back on the world leader board for the question of the day.
Thanks.

Question of the Day?

Some slight changes; for better or for worse we'll have to see!

1. I've added a top 20 members list, all looking at the past 30 days with a scoreboard. If you're off the list, it'll show your individual ranking at the bottom.

2. This could go terribly wrong, but I'm going to ask (automatically) for totally fresh questions each day (instead of recycling), from an AI. There is quite a high benchmark for it to generate something relevant for the day/date and relevant for the subject area. I've upgraded it to a more intelligent model which takes in fact a chunky amount of time to generate something. We'll have to see how well it does each day in coming up with something good and maybe tweak it further over time.

3. I'm capturing a detailed explanation which will replace the current poor explanation for why the correct answer is correct (lets hope it is) and why the wrong answers are wrong (lets hope they are wrong). Additionally I'm logging the data sources, so if it starts giving us rubbish, it may be useful to see why it is doing so. If these sources are useful, I'll publish them here too for everyone to use for further reading!

The first question will be tomorrow. Even I don't know what it'll be yet. Lets see how this goes!
