Question of the Day?

Come on Bill😮
Have you forgotten how to recognise a bit of tongue-in-cheek humour, bordering on satire?
If I had had serious doubts about the site security, and after nearly 40 years in Naval COMMS engineering I'm not a novice in that area, I would have emailed my suspicions directly to Stephen. Thus precluding any unnecessary 'discombobulation' to our members, most of which I have learned are perfectly capable of recognising a bit of ironic humour and having a smile or a chuckle.
No more no less Bill.
Have a Happy New Year, Doug😎

Question of the Day?

Hi Doug.
Sorry am I missing something from your last post?.
Is there some suggestion of a genuine problem with the security of the site.
If so,is Stephen (Fireboat)aware?
The only potential issue was as I see it Rogal’s post.
Can you clarify please!.
Whilst I am not unduly worried, others may be.

Bill

Question of the Day?

Hi all and a blue sky here as well on the 1st. day of 2024.
Hi, Simple sailor, that's the spirit! I have been following the expression,

"Do you want to be right or do you want to be happy"

for over 50 years now. Seems to work OK!

I remember when I made the decision as well in 1971. Our father was in hospital and I walked into a party for his birthday with a very nice cake. My brother was a Bakery engineer so part of the perks (as yet then untaxed). I think he was also chasing nurses!

However he had the date wrong and he had a go at me for forgetting dad's birthday!

Rather than respond with the right date I said oops! and joined in.
When we got back to his flat I quietly told him the right date, and he said oops! But the day went well.

Question of the Day?

What is going on here????? I answered ark royal just after midnight, and correct answer was Langley. Then wake to find no answer logged so answer Langley after given second chance, only to find answer is Argos!!!!!!. This is not a quiz , it’s a plot to send us all “crackers”. I know it only for fun, BUT it isn’t. It’s infuriating. am I the only person to get the same question wrong twice?.

Question of the Day?

This was not a GOOD question👎 HMS Argus was changed over in the yard to be finished as an aircraft carrier. It began life as an Italian ocean liner

Question of the Day?

Here we go again. I got it wrong. However I answered the question correctly. It didn't ask what was the first long deck carrier. Ark Royal was the first to launch and recover aircraft in 1914. But who cares. Happy New Year.😊

Question of the Day?

This is obviously going to be a good year. I got the first question of 2024 correct.😃 Looking at my current position, that gives me 100% correct for the year. Better shut up now as it could go down to 50% tomorrow.😬🤣
Happy New Year.

I think we exchanged opinions on this question last time. I query the raised bit though. When I swim off the back of my son's yacht it is definitely lower.

Swim platform? Que? That is surely the low platform at the stern of typically a power boat that is literally used for swimming access with a fold-up ladder for even easier access?

Question of the Day?

Yes, that's what it stands for.
SSBN is sub surface ballistic missile
The sure way to succeed is, just try one more time
#1628

Question of the Day?

That's ok. I thought the same thing . . . Doesn't SSBN refer to Ballistic Nuclear Submarine??

Question of the Day?

Oh well got todays one wrong. I thought it was called a Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile. I had seen a series on the TV recently Vigil and seen something from that called that. Obviously I have mis recalled what they called them. Even my grammar doesn't sound right.
I'm not too much knowledgeable on these war weapons.

Question of the Day?

If only the world was all predictable with correct answers and solutions to everything!

However we know otherwise. But even if they were weekly it does not automatically sort out questions with correct answers?

Another possibility is you only do one per week!😀😀

Keep them coming please.

Question of the Day?

Why not drop the number of questions to, say, one a week?
Then the quizmaster might have time to make sure the answer relates to the question?
There are too many mistakes and ambiguities as it is.

Question of the Day?

Hi Edw, I am afraid it has happened! The V2 rocket used against the Low countries and G.B. were ballistic missiles. About 2600 were launched.

They burned fuel for 60 second and reached 3000 mph and then they were travelling like a bullet on a set trajectory.

At the descent speed they were ahead of their own noise through the air. So it was a bang followed by a whoosh.

I am old enough to remember, and also the first cruise missiles, the V1, which on a couple of occasions I saw in flight as they passed overhead.

The propoganda war worked as they were reported in the media that they had landed north of London. This got back to Germany and the flight times were adjusted so that many fell short of London.

The defence was American radar controlled guns based on the south coast and these on several occasions took out 90% of them in the air. A fighter aircraft would have to more than match the 400 mph speed.

Shooting at them was dangerous but upsetting the airflow either ahead or alongside upset the gyro controls and they crashed to the ground.

Question of the Day?

I remembered this question from before and I answered ballistic. It was deemed to be incorrect so I went for cruise this time. The correct answer is both. I saw an earlier comment that said that fortunately ballistic missiles had not been used. They can carry conventional as well as nuclear warheads so I am sure that they have been.
Peter.
Happy New Year to all.😃

The latest generation of Tomahawks can do just about anything. It’s terrifying.
#1619

Question of the Day?

If I remember correctly( doubtful, but...) there was an instance during WW2 when a torpedo was launched and missed it's intended target, but upon reaching shore did damage to defenses. Does that count as well. A torpedo can be considered a missile.
Oh, and yes, ballistic missile count as well...😮😮😮😮😮😮

Question of the Day?

I didn't have a clue just took a lucky guess, American History wasn't something done at our school as far as I can remember, and Nassau is the only place I can know as being in the Bahamas, I don't know where any of the other places are. I'm not too great on some parts of World geography unless they have to me normal🤔sounding names.

Question of the Day?

The Battle of Nassau is not regarded as a naval battle but as a raid and landing. The battle of Chesapeake Bay is regarded as the first Naval battle. The Battle of Machias pre-dates both of the battles above so the correct choice should be none of the above.😂
