Question of the Day?

Maybe we should have a none of the above answer to question of the day. Tangiers is the only possible out of the choices but Casablanca s both larger and busier than Tangiers.

Question of the Day?

Yessir Roy, you don’t often see silver plate photos (pre-civil war) so expertly done. The format was 8.5 x 6.5 inches and the only issues back then was the quality of the lens glass. Fortunately these photos are terrific considering all the lens obstacles. I knew you would like them.
I scanned them from a couple of David MacGregor’s books, which are incredible. I believe he owns one of the world’s largest privately held photo archives of the Clippers. The extreme wide shots taken at the Foochow anchorage of ships like Ariel and Thermopylae during the tea trade don’t stack up quite as well, but they are fascinating all the same. I will scan some more. 😉

Question of the Day?

We would send young apprentices to the steam room to ask the lead hand for a short weight (wait) The lead hand would send him back to tell us he only had long weights (waits) We sent him back for a long weight. The lead hand would tell him he had to look for the weight a little while latter he would ask the lad if he waited long enough.

Question of the Day?

On the subject of "highest points" and for grins...When tall was TALL. Syren on the right (circa 1858) and Caravan on the left (circa 1860). Both American medium clippers and minus their skysail booms which would have made the mast-top about 145 feet from the deck. Yikes! The figures in these photos give a a wonderful illustration of height/perspective. The Syren was still plying the seas 50 years later! I will double check Caravan's history

Question of the Day?

Afternoon all.
In my days as a cadet in the MN I like many other cadets before and after was send to the ships stores to get a spare wheel for the TRUCK which was the top most part of the mast.
I assume it is still the same .

Question of the Day?

Perhaps a better option might have been "what is the highest manned point on a ship. Re the button, there loads of old HMS Ganges mast manning videos on you tube...
If it don't fit, use a hammer to make it fit....

Question of the Day?

You have to go along with the options. When I was young I was asked a simple question including my options.

My choice was rich and famous! But it did not happen, it was not an option.

Question of the Day?

Ah, but mast head was not an option - maybe if it had been there, we would have chosen it - do we now need four options to chose from instead of three?

Question of the Day?

In defense of this question none of the other choises qualify.
Now if Titanic was an option we would know where we are. Also unfortunately where the lowest point was as well.

But I digress (possibly my best subject) one might presume that be where a person might go, as sitting on a radar scanner would not get you anywhere.

In Nelson's day there always seem to be a lad standing on the button, I grow cold just thinking about it. I wonder how many survived that into their 'teens?

Question of the Day?

Scheibenkleister!! 🙈
The perfect question would be . . .
What is the highest point on a „OLD“ boat or ship called?
Right? I was wrong, because I was thinking of today . .We have radars!
I would have got it with PeterPan Enemy >> Captain Hook . 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Happy 1st Advent, Michel-C.

Since when is a crow's nest above the masthead?
Had the question asked for the 'highest manned point' ...
But it didn't!

Question of the Day?

My sailing was dinghy racing and I know the button on top of mast is the highest point, the crows nest is just below the button as the person in the crows nest has to hold onto something!

Question of the Day?

I beg to differ with the answer ....
So far my collection resembles "The Island of Misfit Toys". I've picked up several boats that are old builds and have been neglected. I'm giving them the TLC they need, hoping to bring them back to their former glory. Once I get enough practice/ experience I intend to take on a full build.

Question of the Day?

To understand the origin of the winds of the Mediterranean it is necessary to understand where to place the reference point.
The central point of the wind rose is in the Ionian (in the center of the Mediterranean) between Italy and Greece.
Understand this, everything comes back.
The "Maestrale" (Mistral) derives its name from the "magistra", that is Rome. In ancient times it was also called that. This is explained both etymology and origin from the North West compared to the central point.
The "Grecale" derives its etymology from Greece, in fact it is a cold wind coming from the north east compared to the central point.
The "Scirocco" (Sirocco) should derive its etymology from Syria.
It is a wind from South East and therefore hot.
The "Libeccio" derives the name from Libya and in fact it is a hot wind from South West compared to the point of reference.
Attention are Wind things are not so precise and millimetric.

Question of the Day?

You bring back memories. The first submarines I ever saw were German ones that had surrendered and were tied up on the river Thames in May/June 1945.

My dad took me (on a tram) to see them.

Question of the Day?

I remember the first time I saw a submarine surface. It was the Ballistic Missile Submarine, USS George Washington SSBN 598 coming into Pearl Harbor. My Dad was in Vietnam and we lived in Hawaii when I was a kid. It scared the S@#T out of me.

What's worse than that...

One of my youngest daughter's best friends was out fishing two weeks ago near Groton and the USS San Juan SSN 751 (he thinks) surfaced within 100 meters of his 27' Boston Whaler boat. Almost swamped the boat. When he got back into his slip in New London he screamed and yelled to the Base CO's office. A subordinate told him to keep his ass away from that lane as he was in the wrong. Fast attack subs brake for nobody it seems. I shuddered when I heard this!

Pictures are the sub salvage pens at Puget Sound as they await their break-up and reactor removal. But, maybe it was the old 1962 Aurora box that creeped me out?🤔
