Question of the Day?

What blows my mind about Midway, is Ensign George Gay. After having his Devastator shot out from underneath him by 4-5 Zeros, he had to hide under his seat flotation to keep from being strafed, he then had a ringside seat to see 3 of the 4 Japanese carriers get hit by the Dauntless dive bombers. That’s just nuts. Oh I agree with Roy, the latest Midway movie is the one to watch. Very well done. Woody Harellson surprised me by how well he played the part of Nimitz. And the boys at station HYPO got within 5 miles, 5 degrees and 5 minutes of the location, bearing and time of the Japanese attack at Midway….without today’s electronic help. Outstanding….

Question of the Day?

Have to be careful what one says here as it might be the subject of the next question!
Still the Battle of Midway is the one to watch. Not Charlton Heston but the last one. Battle 360 do a very good animation of the event as well.

And what would we be doing without McClusky?

The Japanese Admiral managed to do all the wrong things, but in the right order.

Question of the Day?

Hi I saw Hair in 1973 I was on a long course for work and it came to an end and members wanted to celebrate. I got volunteered to go to the theatre and book 18 tickets!

We ended up in the front row of the Circle, the lads cheered etc but it did not do much for me I am afraid. I was married with 2 young children and a lovely wife. So the occasional nude lady singing was not a big deal.
After the show they went off to drink etc, I quietly left to get back to the family.
cheers

Question of the Day?

I grew up in South Africa so these explorers were dutifully covered in history as Imperial exploiters of Africa 🤣

Ahahahah, giusto.

Il forum ha reso giustizia ad un esploratore, dimenticato ingiustamente!

Question of the Day?

I expect Mr. Speke and myself will go down with the same historical foot note. "Never heard of him"

Question of the Day?

I think we may have shared the same History teacher, as the two names I recognized were Stanley and Livingstone, plus Richard Burton in the film Cleopatra. John Hanning Speke's I have no recollection of whatsoever.
Gary Steam Marine, the only way to go.

Question of the Day?

I got the answer wrong. In all the books I read and at school I remember that the name and discovery of Victoria Falls is attributed to the Scotsman David Livingstone.
Livingstone and Stanley are well known but John Speke, not so much. Compared to the first two it is almost unknown in Italy.
I didn't know that John Speke had given the name first.
Indeed, delving deeper into the research, the right answer is John Speke himself.

Question of the Day?

Hi Mouldbuilder I feel the same, just sinking slowly. I thought Eisenhower too busy going for only the big fish, Hoover obviously into household appliances. Truman's dad ran a brewery and tricky Dickie would sell your soul, but would he wash it first?.

We have had an easy run, but these political questions defeat me.

I wonder if the book on fishing is 'on-line'?

Reckon many of the 'old hands' here would know that😉
From the Oklahoma Rabbit Wars!
It's a compound name "Texoma".
BTW; How's LtCmdr (Feline) Errol getting on with that ?
Still keeping 'Them thar varmints' under control?

What is the name pf the lake between Texas and Oklahoma?

I should know that, but I don't. Got the Tasman Sea right.

Question of the Day?

Having watched the Australian TV patrol boat series "Sea Patrol" (at least 3 times round😁 some nice details of the Armidale class OPV can be seen) helped get this right today. The operating area of HMAS Hamersley comprised 3 of the potential answers.
One to the NE, one to the North, one to the NW.
Thus the remaining option must be the correct answer. Proximity of a large island also helped confirm it😉
