Help needed to convert Kiel Kraft fire tender to electric

HI Alan,

Thanks so much that is a great help. Time is not plentiful as my wife's mum has had a stroke and is not well so the race is on.
Have a new Futaba radio and the receiver and servo all connected and it works !
Just the power supply was a black hole as this battery is a joke !

Thanks again

Help needed to convert Kiel Kraft fire tender to electric

HI Alan,

I REALLY try to support the shops, but it really annoys me when this sort of thing happens, exactly the same happened to me refurbing my Dads 3 foot fireboat. I was sold a useless hi tech esc rated at something like 10 amps, a massive 55 mm prop, and a huge 6v brick lead acid, with a silly little motor, I melted the esc wires the first time I used it at my first fireboat fun day, luckily Pete D took me under his wing, and various peeps there donated bits and bobs to get the boat running properly. I just didn't know any better, neither did the model shop> 😟

This was in the days before this forum!

Very good advice Paul, there is no wonder some model shops are no longer trading

hi,

take the battery back, its really bad advice and they should know better, its too heavy.

The motor is rated for 12v, get a nimh stick pack, lighter, and will give up the juice better that that brick.

speak to Ian at component shop (google for number) and get him to make up two 6v packs, wired to deliver 12v, then you can put one either side of the motor for weight distribution. Make sure the mah is 3300 or above, the higher you can afford the better, it will then run longer (Ian will advise) Look up mtroniks water proof speed controllers, 30amp or more, or electronize, both are easy to set up, however you might have to change the electrical connectors to be compatible with each other, so some soldering skills are required. Ian will fit whatever connectors you need , so you only need worry about the esc.
I take it you have a transmitter , receiver, and a servo for the rudder? You also need a battery charger, and need to ensure if this is an old boat having a rebuild, the propshaft is free and lubricated by some means, or all your new gear may over heat! You learn the hard way unfortunately. if it has an ancient big brass prop, that may have been for Ic power use, get a couple of plastic "x" props, very cheap, start with 40mm, run boat, is everything cool, then go to 45mm, and 50mm, you will probably stay with 45mm.
Viewed from rear, shafts turns anticlockwise, make sure the props turn the right way (I assume single screw?) you will need rto know what diameter the shaft is, I reckon its 4mm providing its not Imperial, take the shaft to prop supplier and you can make sure they fit! (find another model shop that does not give bum advice to get a sale!!!!!!!> 😟 )

This is how I started out several years ago, refurbishing a boat for my Dad, I knew nothing, and spent a fortune on a load of rubbish sold by na reputable model shop, tut tut!
Pictures of interior will help us to advise further, but to do this properly, you will be spending circa £50 plus charger unfortunately!

good luck

Help needed to convert Kiel Kraft fire tender to electric

HI all,
I am trying to finish a K Kraft scale 3/4 to 1'0" 46ft Vosper crash tender for my wife's dead father. We want her mum to see It running but I know very little about out boats.
I have a torpedo 850 motor and need batteries and a speed controller. My local model shop sold me a 12v battery that's a black brick and will just fit but boy It weighs a ton. Sure this can not be right.
Please can someone advise me and offer help on best battery, speed controller and rough place to put battery for balance.
To say I am out of my depth Is a understatement but have finished the boat and detailed It and boy does look great !

Many thanks
