Looks fantastic, well done. Water size is the motor and what battery are you using please?

I know that I'm a bit late in commenting but better late than never. Just had to say what a beautiful boat you ended up with. I built Swordsman from the ModelMaker plan (anyone remember the ModelMaker ?) when it was published back in the distant past. The Huntsman/Swordsman boats have among the most beautiful powerboats ever designed.

The refurbishment is a real credit to you, its certainly a different looking boat than that pictured in February.

Look forward to seeing it on the water Ian. we can have a 60s day 😁
That's if I survive my ale trail in Hull this weekend 😁

Had a good day at it today.
Windows tinted and fitted, windscreen fitted and finished off with car body trim and painted plasticard, bollards and cleats made, so, not much left now.

Huntsman refurb

Neither did I until I spole to cupalloys.
You need a solder specifically for stainless.

Huntsman refurb

Every day is a school day, didn't know you could solder stainless.

Looking good Ian

Today has been productive.

I fitted the wooden handrails and made and fitted the pushpit and pullpit rails. These are made of 3mm stainless soft soldered together.

Paul, dont worry about it, I saw something that would have been ok on 3mm, just not 1mm.

Alan, I ordered some of that trim yesterday afternoon, it arrived today and looks perfect for the job.

Well done that man!

Cheers

Ian I will have a look in my B&Q, I have a feeling my lexan was 3mm, if so sorry for the back info. I will report back in next day or so 👍

Always thought we would find a use for you eventually Alan;-)
The front seats are piped but not the aft bench seats yet.

See, I do have my uses 😁
The seats will have white piping on them eventually, will they not? 😁

looks good Ian

Meanwhile, I have done a bit on the cockpit, all loose fitted at the moment.

I think I may have solved the windscreen issue with a little help from another member, I have ordered some car body work trim that appears to be the right size, so, fingers crossed!

Nice one Alan, I will look into that trim idea.

How about the very small U section plastic that you get from the model shop, heated up in hot water and bent around the screen and then painted with chrome or silver paint.

Paul,
Your B&Q must be better than ours, I couldnt find anything like you suggested. The nearest was white plastic edge trim which was far to big to go over 1mm lexan.

Ian (still mulling it over) 💭

Paul,
Thanks for that, I'll have a hunt around B&Q.

Ian

Ian,
I used some black plastic trim from the local B & Q superstore, unfortunately I can describe it any better. it was for the top of the frame, its almost a "U" profile and just slipped snugly onto the lexan. I bent it by putting it in hot water. For the middle frames between the windows, it is just strips of plasticard, same at the bottom as its not functional just for show.

If you are painting it chrome, alloy etc, bend to shape and paint off the model so then you don't need to mask the lexan. I scrounged some window tint offcuts from a local car window tinting company and tinted the screen and side windows. if you zoom this pic you can almost see what I am rambling on about. I also fitted the screen with some small bolts, hidden behind the air scoops, so the screen can be removed if it ever gets damaged, or the boat gets a repaint, which it needs!

Right then I am now a little stumped and looking for suggestions.

I have cut out the windscreen from 1mm lexan and want to create a frame effect around it.

I have tried adhesive aluminium tape, which seems to be ok until I get to curves, at which point it just buckles and tears.

Does anyone have any suggestions I might try?

Here we are, one step closer to returning this old boat to its former glory.

Nice Ian, good control of a junior hacksaw 😀

Hi
Tonight I have made the throttles for the control desk.

The main part is aluminium, with the handles in brass.

The whole thing is 20mm long and 20 wide, the slots are cut with a junior hacksaw and the brass is 1.8mm diameter/

It was tricky!

Hi,
I used a hot air stripper. Mine has 3 heat settings, I used the mid setting and kept the blower about 2ft away and heated gently.

Hi,
What source of heat did you use?

I fancied having a go at something else today, so, I decided to make some new side air vents.

Fortunately, the ones that came with the boat (wreck) were useable for taking a casting from, which I did in plaster of paris. They came out just fine.

Next, had a look at some peg board for the surface plate. Once recovered from the shock of the price for a bit of mdf covered in holes, I went to a diy store and bought an offcut of mdf for 10p and set to with my drill.

Next, a box was built for the holy mdf to sit on, with a tube to tape the hoover to underneath, and a frame to support the plastic sheet was knocked up.

The first couple of attempts weren't so good, but I soon got the hang of it and am pleased with the results.

So, this week I have done a little more, progress is slow but relentless!

The hull has now been painted and covered with 2 coats of satin varnish.

I have also made a card template for the windscreen and cut slots in the top deck to fix it into. Next, it will be making a screen from 1mm lexan and see if it fits!

Yes, its milled from a solid lump of aluminium.

The first attempt was stainless, that destroyed a milling tip in the process, and I made a boo boo with it that resulted in the two webs coming out in different thicknesses.

The second attempt, in aluminium, I forgot to lock the vertical feed during a cut which resulted in a nice, but unwanted slope on what was supposed to be a flat surface.

Very nice Ian, is it alloy or stainless and milled out of a solid lump I presume.e

I thought I would make a bow roller next, well, it wasnt as easy as I had hoped. After 2 botched attempts I ended up with this.

(the drill is temporary until the right size bolt turns up).

This afternoon I hacked out a samson post from a bit of stainless bar.

Its been a few weeks since the last update - holidays, work etc.

I have made and fitted window frames, a cabin door in the cockpit and some handrails (to be fitted).

I cut the handrails from some scrap mahogany, each one is two lengths of 2 mm glued together and cut using the milling machine, nice and easy that way.

Today I spent a few hours in the sun chucking a few more planks on the deck, followed by a rub down with 80 grit, then 120 grit and finally a wipe over with white spirit.

There is a bit more fettling to do yet, but its well on the way now.

Well, its been a while since the last update, but I have progressed things.

The hull has had two coats of z poxy, a rub down and two coats of primer.

Before putting the top coat on the hull I decided to do the deck planking first, which I have progressed quite well today.

Cheers

So, A little progress. Got the cabin roofs on and made a couple of cockpit seats. BUT, I think I got the dimensions wrong on the seats, they look too small to me
#15

HI Ian. The screen was made from lexan heated and bent over a homemade former. The top trim was a plastic strip frm B&Q in the same section they have the alloy rods etc. I then scrounged some off cufs of window tinting stuff and tinted the cabin windows and windshield. Ott but I wanted a proper screen not just thin plastic. it is removable if need be. I can post pics if you need them. Paul
#14

Huntsman refurb

Thanks for the suggestion Paul, its a good use of space.

The way my Huntsman has been built, the whole superstructure lifts off the hull, leaving very easy access to all the hull space, and under the cabins if needed, so I don't think I will need to cut holes in the bulkheads for access.

What did you use for the surround on the screen?

Cheers

HI Ian,

nice planking!

I may have come along too late, its just a suggestion, I have a Huntsman 28 (Veron design). I changed the roof design to be permanent so avoiding any unsightly hatches (Not sure how the Huntsman 31 is supposed to be?) The front cabin is such a waste of space when all sealed up, I decided to make the door entrance a removable panel, out of plasticard, secured by small magnets. it has proved to be so valuable, as now I can enter the front cabin and have some electronics in there, receiver, light unit, and plenty of room for data logging etc etc. Might be an idea for you?

Its been a while, but other stuff got in the way.

However, today I have made a little progress on the cockpit. Everything is dry fitted at the moment, but you can see what I am aiming for.
