Brushless Motors - Waveney Lifeboat ( Metcalfe Mouldings)

HI Joe,

Sorry not been Ignoring you, a bit occupied elsewhere the last few months. My Waveney is the Metcalfe Mouldings 44 inch model so I have a whole lot more scope for two motors. I still haven't decided whether I am going for brushed or brushless motors. My leaning is for brushed at the moment due mainly to the fact that I am using 12 volt 7.5 amp gel batteries to give me the necessary ballast coupled with the less complicated ESC requirements.

I have also decided that 2 x 900 size brushed is way too big for the model even though that is what is recommended in the instructions. ( graupner 900's are also non existent) the favourite option is probably somewhere around the 700 size.

I would think that given the space restriction in your model Brushless with Lipo's is the way forward for you as weight may also be as much a problem as space.

Have a look at http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=28711.0 which follows a Billings Waveney build on Model Boat Mayhem. You may need to register to view the thread but its free. There is also a whole host of information about the "real" boat at http://www.44mlb.com/

HI Joe, what is it you are after, a small fast electric boat, ready to run?

Thanks Alan and Dave for your advice - two very different opinions, maybe the answer is to go somewhere in between as I must admit I think that I shall end up being a speed freak or will get very bored. 💭

HI Shaun
Brushless is a good choice for a lifeboat. The Waveney was an early fast boat but top speed was 15 knotts so nowhere near as fast as the Severns 35 knotts.
I have been restoring a Metcalf Arun (1/12) scale and intend to fit brushless. I also have the 1:20 Billing Coast Guard model with brushless and this really performs well.
If you are happy to race up and down the lake then 2200kv motors will be fine but not good for slow sailing and showing off your model. 800kv would be a much better choice, give you much better control and still give you plenty of speed and not use too high a current, so you can use smaller ESC's.
I hope you will do a build blog so we can see how you progress. 😀
Live long and prosper

That ESC is the one that I am going to use with mine.
Performance Models don't do a bad price for them, I have a few in my fast electric boats and up until now they have been alright. A program card for them is a good idea as well

Seems like a fair alternative, probably put them with a couple of Turnigy Marine 120A Brushless Boat ESC as each motor draws a max 100 amp.
Its a it expensive this boat building 😱

How about a couple of these Turnigy AquaStar 3974-2200KV Water Cooled Brushless Motor they can be had at the hobby king UK warehouse.
Good high wattage and they will take a lot of amps, run on 3 cell lipo's would give about the right rpm.
Just got one this morning and it looks good.

Brushless Motors - Waveney Lifeboat ( Metcalfe Mouldings)

I'm just getting together the Items to build the Metcalfe Mouldings Waveney Lifeboat. I was going to put two Graupner Speed 900 BB Turbo 12v brushed motors In with The Prop Shop STD 2202/3 left and right hand propellers. I can't seem to source the Graupner motors for love nor money so would appreciate some advice on a suitable brushless alternative using the same props.
