Boat Transport

Well its had a good trial, carried all our camping gear and 9 boats to 2 shows in appalling weather conditions and did it with ease. A total of 117 road miles and some pretty rough fields and not one bit of damage, May have to fit it with a roof rack or box if my fleet keeps growing.
Will post some pictures soon, by for now Colin.

Boat Transport

HI guys, thanks for your comments and hints,
I've been building trailers for all types of work for 50 years now, but I still think I'm learning.
After my initial trials with this trailer refurb, I changed from the original 8"X 4" wheels to 12" with 155 x R12c Tyres at 25psi, And with the widened axle which I've moved back to 6" behind the balance point, fitted with semI eliptical soft leaf springs and hydraulic dampers it tows very smoothly, even on our pothole riddled roads.
I do strap the models onto their stands, which are locked to the shelves with a bolt and wing nut. Also any areas that could come into contact are covered with 1" thick foam rubber just in case.
I'll post again soon as I'm doing a long weekend show in two weeks so will know for sure how well it performs.
Thanks Colin.

COLIN.

Speed and tire pressure make a difference on how much bounce you get. Probably add your picnic cooler for weight. Some folks here in Texas add shock absorbers to their small animal trailers to get rid of excess bounce. 💭

Boat Transport

Fellow in Olympia 3-4 years ago placed his 40 inch tug model in a small trailer - solid axle - on the way to a show, over a small bump in the road - trailer went up, boat went up/down and he ended up with more pieces than he had in the original kit. Might be prudent to seat the models on foam and strapped so they can't do that. Different than suspension in our vehicles. Wise to give it some thought. Regards, mike

HI Colin
Very Impressive.
Do you strap the models down in transit. My trailer bounces all over the place and I would be worried about damaging my models.

Boat Transport

Owing to a growing Fleet, I was In need of a way to transport my boats to shows and the sailing days, so I decided to rebuild an old trailer Into a suitable unit for the purpose. Its built on an old coonway trailer tent chassis, with a new frame built from 40x40x3 angle Iron, and panels of 9mm marine ply, a base of 20mm hardwood ply. Inside It Is 7'6" long by 4' wide and 4' high with a removable top. Outside painted In marine paint, and Inside with exterior gloss, all joints are sealed with marine quality sealer. The axle, suspension and brakes are rated at 1 ton. Unladen weight Is 385 kilos. And It tows really well loaded and unladen.
