Operating Hinged Door/Hatch

Update: Working hinges now on my Springer #4 (USACOE stoplog tug).

The pilot house has a working door to see the detailed interior. The lower door (hatch) is hinged because it will remain open because the sound unit is located inside.

Still need to do some more details, the biggest is the structure railing and ladder. Getting there.

JBWeld seems to work well. Rough up the styrene (or ABS surfaces) and remove the dust by vacuuming and wiping with alcohol at least twice. Dry well.

My previous method of a functional door hinge. This is a flush door with vertical pins (pivots). Photo taken at the SSMBC meet yesterday, 7 April, 2024,

Bruced1846, if you can't get styrene tubing small enough, you could super glue a small piece of copper/brass tubing in place. That was my original idea.

Bruce, you are the only other person (so far) that got the 47' transom details correct.

Great Idea and video. Now how to do it with Styrene as I don't have a 3D printer and do't know how to use CAD. I have a Cameo 4 cutter and did find out I can cut styreren with it as long as not to thick. set the blade hieght to score just enough to break the piece. I'm going to try your Idea on the hinge using small styrene tubing to attach to edge of my doors.
Great idea love it

Just love the video Lew. Very well shot and presented, and (excuse the pun) a model for other video presenters. 😉

Success on the prototype!

I made a simple part which turned out easier that I was originally thinking of. I was going to make a small hinge set consisting of a hinge and a pin. But by combining the hinge into the door all I needed was to cut a piece of brass/copper wire to pin it to the bulkhead. I made a very short video showing the process and door movement. See link.

Here is what I did for pad locks on my RNLB Trent 1:12 scale. I used styrene strips 3mm x 2mm cut into small pieces 3mm long. And brass rods 0.80 mm dia. And with my pin drill set I drilled the holes to fit. It was too hard to drill brass, so styrene was easier.

I'm very interested Lew. Blog on Man👍
Especially in what material you will make the door hinge plates from (Sheet? thickness?), and how you will drill the tiny holes needed in them!?😮
Cheers, Doug😎
PS. I found a local (German) source of the hinges mentioned by Bruce.
But find them a bit large (8x10mm) for most of my boats/ships.
Have been pondering buying a few and cutting them down to size, if possible😁

Bruce, I'm going to make the hinges out of copper/brass. The door will be 3D printed in ABS (like everything I do).

Have not made them yet. All in the thinking stage right now.

I'll shift over to a build blog so that this should be easier to find. (Yes, I like to share my builds as long as there is interest.)

Did you 3D print the hinges? if not how did you make them? If you don't mind sharing.

OOPS...! - my bad🤕. I did not show the latest door type so you could see how the flanged doors fit into the openings. I had flat surface mount doors. Here is an updated photo.

I had already printed the doors without the notches for the hinges to mount. Good time to clean up that gasket as well. I will make a new set not that it looks like this is the best, simplest, and better looking choice.

Such a simple little device. Things we all unknowingly use many times a day every day in real size!

However, in 1/17th scale that makes a difference in design. Doll house hinges are too large (and ugly). Previous builds I used flush doors with pins top and bottom.

This door design you probably noticed is a little different. Part of the thickness is recessesed and part like a flange. It will have a "gasket" going around the mating surface.

All this in a scale that is too small for screws means a simple design in operation and installation. The upper door leads to the pilot house and the lower door to the engine room where a speaker emits the engine sounds.

THANKS ALL !!!

Hi LewZ, interesting to see your hinge design. From experience I can say that it works very well. I used this arrangement on a 1/12 scale dolls house built some 30 years ago. As they say 'the devil is in the detail' so watch out for any spacing required between the door frame and the hinge pin. Good Luck ! 😉

Being that my current build Springer (fourth) is having a moderately detailed interior and the doors/hatches are in a very visible location, I wanted them to be able to be positioned.

The scale is 1/17. I wanted something not too obvious nor off scale.

Not finding a viable type hinge, I came up with this idea. (See drawing.)

Has anyone tried this?
