34" Fairy Huntsman air scoops

Hi Olly.

If I send you the details for one of mine can you produce the CAD file at some point please. No rush as I have a way to go with my builds.

I've done all my scratch build drawings in Visio which can't produce the files for 3D printing. I've started to learn TurboCAD but haven't got very far!

Once I've got one CAD file I hope I can alter it for my other builds. They are all at a scale of 1:12 but the air inlets do vary in shape and size from model to model.

Hi Pete,

Send me a sketch of the sizes that you need, and I'll see what I can do for you.

Hi all,
Thanks for all your responses. I've tried Slec but they can only offer me the ones they use on a different model, which may not be the right size. I'm not a happy wood whittler so 3D printing seems to be the best way for me.
I've searched the internet to see if anyone else has designed a 3D one but there seems to be nothing out there.

It's a long way into the future at the moment, as the original build is so bad that it will be hours of preparation before I need them. This is where it is right now ☹️

This is something I'm going to have to address with my builds at some point.

I might try making some out of timber but I need a number of sets at different sizes so 3D printing is probably favourite.

Good to see someone with a Modav model as most are Precedent.

Photo would be good.

Try giving SLEC a call. They are really helpful. If not, come back to me and I'll see if I can CAD an stl for you to print. It may take a couple of weeks though.

I have used spoons in the past (as a temporary measure) on my various Fairly Marine models (and my Chris Craft Corvette) but I prefer to make them from wood and sand them to shape.

I think most of the various kits from Aerokits etc were just sanded to shape from blocks of hardwood that were cut to give the plan shape but needed sanding to thin the rear and make the nice profiled torpedo shape.

My more recent efforts were made from laminated "C" shapes of plywood with a thin ply skin top cover so when they were sanded to shape I still had a nice thin front edge to the intake.

Just a little more work cutting the different "C" shapes and laminating them together with the thin top cover, but they sand nicely to shape and look better that a solid block does at the front.

This can also also be done with laminates of plastic (the type used for advertising boards is nice and easy to work with...and usually free when the boards are thrown away), but in both cases the inside of the scoop can be sanded to shape as well as the outside giving a very pleasing finished result that (unlike spoon) can be made to exactly the correct scale shape.

Some side scoop type air intakes are more rectangular in shape and are easer to make with separate side and top components and need less sanding to achieve the final shape.
Never too old to learn

Pete,
I don't know the exact design scoops you are looking for but I have cut up plastic spoons
to make scoops for projects.
Perhaps that would work for you.

I had a similar problem and ended up cutting down a couple of spoons. The problem is finding spoons of the correct size. 👍

I have cut down plastic spoons in the past. Available in different sizes and styles, I'm sure you can find some that meet your needs. Good luck 😉

Hi Everyone, I've got hold of an old wooden model of this kit made by Model Avionics. It is in a very poor state and needs a complete refurbishment. I need to find a source of the air scoops that are on the sides of the cabin. I can find ones for the smaller kit (16th scale) and possibly the 47" kit but there don't seem to be any for the 34" kits The Precedent kit had plastic ones but that's no longer made. I have a good 3D printer so if anyone has a .stl file I could print them. Any help would be much appreciated 🤞
