MATAKANA MODEL BOAT SHOW NEW ZEALAND 21.04.24

Hi JB,
Thanks for asking, however alas no progress on the Drifter due to time difficulty.
Life is really getting in the way of hobby time at the moment.
I did buy a Revell kit of a north sea trawler and have converted it to RC, I will post a build log of it at some point.

Nice bit of bitumen over there.

Cheers,
Stephen.

MATAKANA MODEL BOAT SHOW NEW ZEALAND 21.04.24

Hi Steve, I went up a bit late today, as it was raining Fri and Sat (the first 2 days) and it was a bit quiet. People were maybe put off by the rain the first few days, as it's a fair way to go to get drenched. I think they did alright out of it though, but they were just taking donations for an entry fee. I chucked a few dollars in to help the cause and maybe encourage another show. The lady I spoke to seemed keen to put it on again.

Some of the people brought their models up from Auckland, which is a bit of a drive, although with the new multi $B northern toll highway which has recently opened, it's an easy drive. I went up on the old highway and came back on the new one to try it out. It goes south from Warkworth now, and joins up with a previous 10yr old section through the tunnels, and then all the way to Auckland. Took about 12yrs to complete,- lot of cutting through hills and filling. I've driven across the 'Pukeko' bridge (named because the struts resemble swamp hens legs) and it's a scary experience,- goes to a fancy subdivision dead end. Odd sort of structure, doesn't inspire confidence🤔 They built it on the original contour and dug out underneath.

How's your trawler coming along, any more progress ?

MATAKANA MODEL BOAT SHOW NEW ZEALAND 21.04.24

Hi JB,
Great video, looks like it was a really nice show with some quality models.
Looked like there was even a ramp for amphibious vehicles...

Cheers,
Stephen.

MATAKANA MODEL BOAT SHOW NEW ZEALAND 21.04.24

Thought I'd go and have a look at the model show, on this weekend in Matakana, 70km north of Auckland, (36km north of Orewa where I live) Matakana is a small town just north of Warkworth and has a number of large vineyards in the surrounding areas, (as well as some stylish public conveniences).😎 The display was held in the local primary school hall and pool. The show was to raise funds for a new heating system for the pool.

Many of the warships were over 6ft long and represented RN (before the change to RNZN) ships, with new ships and their modern RNZN namesakes. Also Bismarck and other German ships, PT boats, Perkasa, Thornycroft ASRs etc - too many to list. So many amazing models, but only a few seem to be sailed locally, (mainly yachts). I did make a few contacts and discovered a few new (unknown) places to sail down my neck of the woods (but 30km in the other direction where the warship guys sail)😐 Will have to investigate.

Unfortunately I found out about the show at the last minute, as it wasn't advertised well down my way, or I would have offered some of my models which could have filled a few gaps, but I've put my name in for next time. (they had the last one in 2023) Despite the number of models, very few are sailed now except for yachts, and everyone has the same problem, nowhere decent to sail scale boats. The tiny boats you see in the pics are some of over 100 identical ones made for the school, to try and get kids interested. They had a competition for the best decorated boats plus sailing in the pool.

The YT pic stream was the easiest way of posting the 113 edited photos. Enjoy
JB
