Glue

I have good results using BSI Medium Set CA glue, and since Balsam is very porous, I would use a quick shot (spray) of Accelerator (kicker), on the Balsa, then pur the CA glue on the GRP surface.

Thank you everyone for your replies.
First time I've worked with a grp hull (and very sketchy instructions).
I'm starting a Mountfleet Models Brede which uses balsa to support the deck but will be filled around the deck to hull join with epoxy. I think I'll use the clear Gorilla glue for the supports.
I've read Brede build instructions on another forum. Any other hints gratefully welcomed

Look at the question. It is about gluing "BALSA" wood to a GRP hull🙄. I would say that using balsa is almost as bad as using expanded styrene foam. I have never done this nor do I plan to do so, especially for any joint requiring strength.

You need something that will seep deep into the wood. Possible let a full coat of super glue soak deep into the balsa (even the sides away from the joint) and let it dry, then apply another adhesive. Experiment first and let us know how it works.

Our go to for any wood or plastic to GRP is liquid nails. It is cheap and I have never had a joint fail. Best to clamp it and leave for 12 hours

Peter, If you want the best adhesive, and money isn't a problem, the get some Stablit Express, I think it's available from Cornwall Models but just google it, best glue I've ever used for GRP hulls.

Cheers, Pete😊

Hi, I would use epoxy if you can as that is compatible with the GRP hull. You can get 90 seconds epoxy but the little I have used I have found the 5 minutes a better cure time. It allows a little more time for alignment etc.
Cheers Ian😊

Peter,
Yours is one of those questions that is liable to get many, some contradictory, answers. There are lots of choices, as Wez pointed out Gorilla Glue will work. So will epoxy, as well as polyester resin that has been thickened.. some of the answer is what you are comfortable working with. I would stay away from Super Glue, no matter the type or brand.

I’ve been using gorilla glue clear and normal both do ok but don’t use water just neat and not too much

I'm confused.
I want to glue some balsa wood to a grp hull.
What is the best glue for the job?
Thanks
