Clothes Hanger Wire !

HI Haverlock

Thanks for your time and input. I have given the wire the magnet test an they all respond so as you I'll do a sample and suck it and see. You have given me the confidence to give it a go !!!

All the best.

Clothes Hanger Wire !

If a magnet will stick it probably can be. if a magnet will not it may still braze.

The acid test is to try a sample and see.

The problem as I see it is that there is no standard for wire coat hangers. So two samples from same source may well have wildly differing makeups.

This matters because of possible galvanic actions leading to corrosion. Not a big problem on models but one to think about for the long term.

Thanks for your feedback Haverlock. Regarding the difference of standard and make up of hangers could they be brazed irrespective of make up ?

Try a magnet on the wire, if it sticks, it can probably be silver soldered.

I have in the passed used soft solder on such wire but that was one example.

Heat a sample to a good red heat.

The problem is that there is no standard for these items so you will have to check each hanger to see what will work.

A better solution would be to measure its diameter and buy brass wire or tube of the same diameter, that will give you a material of known parameters.

Clothes Hanger Wire !

HI every one, I am building a Cygnus GM32 Crabber as in the photo, I am in the early stages and I am doing a bit of forward research. I need to make some rails to go round the gunwales as in the photo and I have discovered that wire clothes hangers, the type you get from dry cleaners are the right thickness scale for the job. Has anyone worked with this type of metal before and can it be soldered, braised or welded. Thank you in anticipation for any help contributed.
