Which Varnish?

With regards to Which Varnish, Quite a few years ago now I used a product called "Finnigans", it was what you might call a heavy duty type of varnish, thick and sticky. if doing a larger surface you could practically pour it on in a small pool and simply brush it out and it found its own level. As this varnish had an Epoxy content when fully cured you can imagine how hard the finish was and it had a long lasting reflective shine. I would think that with care this varnih would look good on the deck of the model of a 1930s steam launch or speed boat.

Thank you for that. if I watch the DVD best I turn the sound off first then.
I used to be indecisive but now I'm not so sure?

I used Rustins Quick Drying Clear Gloss Varnish. I got the idea from Mainsteam Models DVD, How to Build a Model Steam Launch (www.mainsteam.co.uk) which contains lots of hints & tips. The only thing that p*****d me off was the musac!

I think that the logic of using interior varnish is that your boat will only get splashed for a couple of hours a week, will be wiped down after use and has the rest of the week to dry out. I'll check what brand I've used and let you know, but not tonight as its out in my garage!

Thank you. I have been looking at Ronseal but the only gloss I can find is for 'interior' use, bearing in mind my boat will be on the water.

I used to use a marine grade varnish and always felt that it ended up loôking too thick. it didn't go on very easily either. More recently I have used an interior, water based gloss varnish which looks far better than the marine grade I used before.

For what it is worth cormorant, I would shy away from varnish and use Rustin's Danish Oil the ! That way you will ensure the timber breathes and it won't crack or craze and come refit time all you do is wipe with white spirit to clean and then re-oil either with lint free cloth or sparingly with Artists brush. if I had my time over again I would never varnish wood. I would oil everything, every time !!! 😊

Which Varnish?

I am building a scale 1930's yawl which has some wooden features including deck planks, hatches, masts and booms. I want to varnish these fittings but I'm not sure about 'rules' on wether to use gloss, satin or matt varnish.
Also having difficulty in finding suppliers of the small quantities I need.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
