Cap'n H - tracks may be selected at will. Assign a spare proportional channel and pump the joystick 'N' times and hold pressed to activate track 'N' - if hold is continued the track repeats until stick released. 16 tracks are arranged in two banks of 8 either side of neutral. 9 pumps and hold either way and volume increases/decreases until stick released. Selecting a track cancels a currently playing track so a short silence track can be used as a cancel function for long duration tracks such as background ambience. Track 1 optionally has a special interrupt function such that if another track is playing, track 1 will interrupt it and when complete the original track will resume where it left off - so you could have an engine sound (not speed related - that's a different animal!) interruptable by a horn for example.

I tried the bluetooth idea using a good quality bluetooth speaker. once in the boat the range was ten feet at best and volume wasnt great. if alan has further developed what he did for me it will be very good. he is a modeller so understands what we want mine is several years old now and technology has come on a lot. with the bluetooth idea its too fiddly trying to operate your smartphone and operate the boat so you end up not selecting specific tracks which is a nice touch

Nice looking piece of kit alan one question the 16 tracks can I select which track to play or do they play in sequence?

and a smart phone can play a virtually unlimited number of tracks selectable at will. True range is limited but probably far enough to play sounds while you can hear them. There are ways to extend the Bluetooth range if you REALLY need to.

Further to Paul Devlin's post, I've just released a new version of the sound unit I made for him using a smaller, cheaper MP3 module which plays user supplied sound files on a micro SD card and also has an integral 3W amplifier so it will drive an 8 ohm loudspeaker directly. Full details, including a download of the instruction manual on my website http://www.forge-electronics.co.uk/index.php/boats/16-ch-sfx
Units are available from www.scalewarship.com

I have one of their sound cards in my Orca. Alan Bond (who does work for technobots) made a trigger unit that operates from tx. Card takes an sd card that I have loaded songs, chatter, engine noise etc commentary from the jaws movie (stuff like this is plentiful on the web) and I operate via a redundant tx channel which track I want. Not used this boat for ages, but I am sure I have something like 16 different tracks etc
this was prior to changing to a stick operation and was testing, but you get they idea!

Hi Des
I think you are looking for Technobots http://www.technobotsonline.com/model-engine-sound-effects.html.
Their engine sounds are quite realistic if you feed them through a decent amp and speaker.
