Hmm! See what you mean.
OK. I'll think about it. May not be around 3 much longer meself!
Can always contact Martin later as he'll have 'em on his PC. I hope!
May have to help him find them again and get 'em on a stick🙄
He's a bit of a Luddite (self confessed).

OK, Peter. I'll send it on. I haven't had a chance to look at everything as there's just too much on it and it's way too big to download.

But thanks for the loan. I have taken some car plans off it.

Hi Peter,
On reflection it dawned on me that I already have so many unfinished, and not yet started, projects that it's doubtful I could finish them all before I pop me clogs!🤔

So many thanks for thinking of me with your generous offer but I think you should tell Martin to send the stick on to Peter Taylor directly.
Cheers, Doug 😎

"......still p....s me off ......."

Ah, well - it depends what you want to happen. If you want to start an argument, you need to consider where the other fellows are coming from....

And in this case they are supporting a print magazine. This is a declining industry, and free plans if you buy the magazine must be one of the major draws. So I suspect that they will not be supportive of the idea that anyone can draw up a plan and publish it for free if they want - still less of the idea that free cutting lines might be available if you run a CNC machine.

But I think that, if more youngsters are to be encouraged into the hobby, making kits on school equipment ought to be as cheap as possible...

Thanks Peter
Wow! That's a lot of plans!!😮
Understand the problem.

".......Has anybody given you any credit for reviving the Eezebilts & the idea of the 50+versions?......."

Not at all. In fact you will find a lot of my work cropping up in a number of odd places - Aerofred, for instance, seems to have copied much of the OldBoats web site for their plans download section.

But I am not worried about it. Rather the contrary! In the somewhat murky areas where I started my career it was expected that you would never receive credit for anything you did. Or blame either - which was quite convenient! And if you want anyone to do something, it is far better for that person to think that they decided to do it themselves, rather than recognise that someone else is prompting from the background....

Alwyn Vintcent

Hi. I see we have the same interest in the Alwyn Vintcent.
I have numerous photos downloaded, made a full set of accurately scaled plans off the photos, and completed building a 1:50 scale model. Alan. Pretoria. 0829512099

Hi Peter, Many thanks for the info👍
Martin Field (Westquay) and I have traded all sorts of things over the last few years.
I do his lecktrickery (converter boards for Taycol motors for instance) and he helps me out with imperial size drills and mechanicals, esp machining 😊
He's just bought my vintage Great Planes Piper Cub kit.
I'll Mail him about the stick, sounds very interesting.
Cheers, Doug

"HI DG , see on Mayhem someone building a Chiaemera. Might be a good plan for the old boats site. There must be few others out there too."

I stay off Mayhem ever since I found moderators checking my posts for political correctness. But if you can find any old plans they will be gratefully received...

By the way, were you able to read the DXF file I sent? Should I produce the rest of the pages?
#27
"Hi DG - thanks for the explanation - one less thing to worry about."

If you go to the 'set-up' for your email account, you will find that one of the fields that you input is the 'From' field. You can put anything in there, though people usually put their own address in, of course!

If you want you could put 'President Trump, White House' in, or any other string. Which would amuse people when you emailed them...
#26
None so far. Note that spam and other malicious emails pretending to come from friends and acquaintances often manage this by simply reading the address list of the machine they are connecting to, and using a randomly-picked address in the 'From:' column.

So I may receive an email purporting to come from you simply because I have your address on my system. There is no connection with you, your machine is not involved in any way, and there is nothing you can do to stop it. The issue is entirely with me, and the dodgy sites I may have clicked on during the day!

This often leads to much confusion, with the person receiving the dodgy email complaining to the apparent sender, who then responds that he has not done anything, and worries that his machine has been taken over in some way...
#25
This site has a strange interface for downloads.

1 click on the image. you get another picture of the image on the screen.
2 Now look in the top left corner. You see a small blue button. click on it.
3 the file will now download. look in your download directory to find it.

I will send a sample single page over by email - Nick said that he could not read my DXFs so I need to confirm that they are readable before sending a big package...
#24
It is no trouble just to send the pages that I drew as a dxf - means that you will have to extract each shape and join some together, though. Here is the PT Boat, to test if you can read it...

If I knew that I was going to send off dxfs I would have arranged them better...!

Tid tug sounds good. Didn't they do a little MTB?
If it don't fit, use a hammer to make it fit....

Hi Peter,
my address is 77, The Wroe, Emneth, Cambs. PE14 8AN
I look forward to seeing what's on it. I always enjoyed Model Maker magazine when I've seen the odd copy.

Hi Peter,
that stick sound great! Could you send it to me if I pay postage? I'll gladly send it back or forward it to anybody you say.
Do you mean George Turner? I don't think he did one. Not much the old bastard hasn't done. He completely disregards anything anyone else does. He seems to think his shit don't stink, but I've known the old spiv for years. He doesn't know me though! You can take the yob out of Southend, etc., etc. Fortunately although I lived there for years I come from somewhere else.

Let me know about the stick please?

I've no idea how to get on Linked In and to be honest I never knew what it was all about or how I ever got on it!

Cheers,
Martin

Hi Peter, we may have done. I have a shite memory. Always have had!
Yes I did a master for a Midget and a Sprite for FF Models. Then I sold the Midget master to Steve Ward of Penelope Pitlane. Alas he sold out to those ghastly cloggies, Pendle, so that's where you have to go now to get one. Sadly Steve died last week.
I have also done corrected Frogeye Sprites (the Airfix kit is 3mm too narrow) and a couple of special Sprites, a Speedwell for Dave Capelen (SMK on the IoM). I am also doing a different Speedwell as Dave can't be arsed to produce anything and my son now does resin moulding. And I just did a Sebring Sprite for Colin Spark at RS Slotracing, but the poor sod was recently flooded out of house and business and won't be getting going again for months.

The single step hydro was the Darby One Design, now finished, but requiring a motor as I nicked it for my new hobby of model flying! I also have a Greavette style mahogany boat and a white and blue Chris Craft made from a Sea Hornet by Aerokits. Cost me a massive 99p off ebay!

Cheers,
Martin

Works fine - am going through the Model Boats at the moment. A nostalgia hit...I can remember reading those adverts as a kid!
#16
No need to have my stick returned - I didn't send one after you said that you would arrange for one to be delivered here.

Happy to pass the stick on to any other address you specify.
#15
Fine - I will return the stick to your sister after reading it...

Hi Redpmg
That sounds great , the digital plans make it easier to get into my laser cutter. It saves me a lot of drawing

Look forwards to seeing what you have

If you can get the original plans by Aerokits I believe they show everything, deck plans, bulkheads etc.
#11
No problem - Letter including addressed envelope has been posted. Hope to be able to put a lot more plans up...

I would greatly appreciate it if you could find a way to get this information over to me. But there is no hurry, of course....

"....have you ever thought about contacting this fellow John Parker ? He seems to be a mine of info re old boats - maybe he can lay his hands on some old Aussie plans for the Old Boats site.( Aerofred has started with some but mostly Polish/Czech/Russian stuff - a more recent one will really peeve Billings as its one of their current items the Monterey Clipper fishing boat.)...."

Hmmm... I believe that John Parker is aware of me - he sent me some Marinecraft data a few years ago. While I would be very happy to receive any contributions, since he writes for Model Boats he has the option of putting any data he has out to a small free (and not well supported!) web site, or to an established magazine with a major readership which will pay him for the contributions. You can see why he would prefer the latter!

I am odd in that I prefer to run taking no money or contributions in kind. I may dress this up a bit in pompous language about 'giving back to the community', but another major reason is that I am highly disorganised, and would not like to get involved in agreements when I can't rely on being able to keep my end up!

Aerofred seems like a good example of the way money can corrupt - as far as I can see he seems to download plans from Outer Zone en mass, strip out any credits and publish them himself, charging for prints? I don't think publishing currently-available plans is a good idea - it could bring retribution down on everybody who is doing this - even if, like me, they obtain permission first....

I don't think it's worth asking your son about free domains - DotTK is running OK at the moment, and I will jump any new domain bridge when I come to it. At the moment my main issue is not being good enough at coding to run a proper website - and finding that old Windows XP systems are falling out of compatibility with modern software. I really must learn enough to set up proper Linux web servers...

"...I have the whole Adam book in PDF format - I can send by We Transfer as its nearly 29mb if you give me the address you want it sent to . Never sure which one works...."

You have? That would be brilliant!

As you can see, I have an old physical copy, which I got cheap because there was damage to it and pages missing. I had hoped to obtain a photocopy of the missing pages at some point, and then scan the book and put it on a web site. Would it be OK to do that with your .pdfs?

I think all of my email addresses work - but there are so many of them that I find it hard to keep up with everything! oldboats@hotmail.co.uk is probably the correct address for this task....

Cutting Lines

Just thought - what do you mean by 'cutting lines'? Do you mean G-Code? If so, G-Code can be generated from .dxf by using DXF2GCode....
#3
I'd like to help, of course - but I don't have any .jpgs.

The typical way I do my plans is:

1 - think of a boat!
2 - find a picture of it on the web. If I'm lucky, I can find top and side views of it or a similar boat. If I can't, I have to sketch out a shape freehand.
3 - import this pic into my CAD package as a bitmap.
4 - Using it as a guide, draw up some basic external lines. Decide internal construction, and sketch out the bulkheads, keel etc. All this is in Ashlar-Vellum .vlm format.
5 - Output each sheet as A4 using a 'print to pdf' program, and load it on the web site.

If you're interested, the boat I'm doing at the moment is one that an American reader sent me a picture of and asked if I could design a kit - I enclose a shot. This is the sort of thing I get to work with...

I do suffer from sarcasm and exaggeration when posting - though I see this as a revolt against modern public discussion - which seems to view the truth not so much as optional as something to be avoided at all costs.

It is highly unlikely that I have dealt with more plans than you - for you it is a profession! But I do like to look at the history of information and see where things come from. It is instructive to see how precision in reproduction is rather a modern interest - Victorian toys, for instance, were usually nothing like the real object they claimed to depict. I think it is a social phenomenon - people expect a certain level of accuracy and no more.

Your comment on academia is a very telling one - the idea that it is appropriate to study anything by concealing what you think is one of the stranger concepts from the last decade or so, and we can see its impact everywhere....
